Inklings

Lately, I see a lot of people teetering on the brink of brilliance. People who have pushed and pulled for a long time and are now ready to remember a spell of yielding.

Last night around the fire, some friends debated New Year’s resolutions and whether they are pointless or not.

At one point F said her resolution was “to be more mindful” and as soon as she said that my mind became focused and I became present. I instantly knew what my resolution was.

American Naturalist journal will publish breaking research next month that explains why some spider species live in large co-operative groups -- banding together to spin webs, hunt prey and even care for one another's offspring.

"Being social and co-operating allows spiders to enter an ecological niche that's not available to solitary individuals," says paper author Leticia Avilés, a UBC biologist who started studying spiders on an undergraduate field course in her native Ecuador.
