... at Bryce Canyon last July. My old friend, Kenny, and I had about 2 weeks to see as much of the southwest as possible. We covered a lot of spectacular ground, including Death Valley, Valley of Fire, Zion, Red Canyon, Bryce Canyon, Kodachrome Basin, Grand Escalante, Petrified Forest, Capitol Reef, Valley of the Gods and the Grand Canyon (north rim). WOW - like an enormous, divine art museum out there. A return to the red rock realm is in my future - Canyonlands, I hope. Want to join me?

I haven't felt much like blogging in a while, which is sort of telling, in itself. I want to change just about every aspect of my life, and am overwhelmed by it all. So, naturally, I've been daydreaming a lot about escaping to the desert wilderness of NV-UT-AZ, where I spent about 2 weeks wandering last July - a trip that was among the best gifts I've ever given myself. Anyone want to go roam the Canyonlands?

What made the experience especially special was collaborating with about 20 fabulous people to create a funded art installation for PDF, which we collectively named, "A Wicked Bright Idea." Five of us gathered back in March - on Mardi Gras, of course! - to put our heads together and come up with a vision for the pie... read more
I thoroughly enjoyed another weekend, out in the sunshine along the Potomac River - and I wasn't alone -many others were also out and about, soaking up the warmth and beauty of springtime.

Aside from the biking, hiking, jogging and kayaking humans, the most prevalent sun worshippers were the turtles - our peaceful little neighbors, who've existed since the age of the dinosaurs, but whose future looks disturbingly grim. this is quite possibly the most overdue testimonial in recorded history (and only the 2nd one i've ever written)! but beautiful mer so inspires me, i can no longer tarry! she is known by many names--mermaid, mermilicious, mermiliciosa, goddess sister, wonder twin--but none of these captures the essence of what's inside. allow me to get right to the point. mer is absolutely one of the most beautiful women i've ever known, and she's one of my favorite people in the entire universe! how i love her, and how she loves me! unconditionally and forever, no matter what! what freedom she offers, in her full, unbridled acceptance of me! my dearest friend on planet Earth, mer has the uncommon gift of sharing just a word or a glance and making rainbows come out. she is gentle and strong, sweet and sassy, and super sexy! when i think of all her talents--fire-spinning and hooping, belly-dancing, photography, and writing, horseback riding, just to name a few--i'm amazed that she's as down-to-earth as she is, because her immense talent is simply cosmic! but those are just things she *does*. we haven't even talked about the things the girl *is*, and that's where she really blows me away. in addition to being a svelte and statuesque long-haired, siren (who speaks spanish and portuguese, btw, and traveled central america on photographic expeditions with national geographic!!!), her heart! ohhh!!! her heart! mer's heart is so big, you're already living in it and you didn't even know it--except those times you felt most loved and at home, of course. everything she's done has been out of service and devotion, love and adoration, for the living beings around her! think of the way she cares for animals. dude, she rescues turtles! she'll carry an insect outside rather than take it's little life away. just the sight of a little frog hopping along makes her light up like glow-fur on a playa coat! she's been a loving caregiver for horses, a rescuer of street snakes, and a designer of furry, muppet-esque playa wear. she has spent her entire working life helping people who need it--risking her life to organize women in third-world countries, working in the non-profit sector for virtually nothing, and living with little to be able to do work that is meaningful. when i think of the ideal woman--okay, okay, my mom comes to mind. but then there's mer!!! with her adorable quirkiness, extremely quick wit, genteel charm, fiery passion, and multi-colored hair, what the hell else are you gonna do besides love the woman??? and she's gorgeous!!!!!!! she has the best tummy ever, and the sight of her in long, flowing, goddess clothes, long hair swaying seductively as she walks past, is absolutely otherworldly! i often wonder what planet this former model comes from--and are the guys there as enchanting as the women obviously are? her body moves with such grace, as though she is possessed by the Universe's perfect flow itself! when she dances with her fire fans, she looks like a butterfly with wings of fire. or a hindu goddess with arms of flames, blessing us! what a sight she is, so surreal, so mystical, so mythical, invoking images of fantasy worlds, looking like a walking fairy tale! she is, indeed, like a dream... come true! the more i know her, the more i love her, am inspired by her, admire and adore her, and the more i know what it means to be completely loved by a true sister from another mister! i am blessed and i am blissed by her radiant presence! her angelic face, her gorgeous smile, her beautiful, bright eyes, her epic, otherworldly fashion sense--ahh! my wonder-twin goddess sister, i am so blessed to have you as my best friend! i love you more every day, and i thank Goddess for you every day, and i will never, ever forget you, no matter how many lifetimes pass! Mer gets high on life itself. She is a lover of nature, friend to all animals, and savior of turtles. She is part mermaid, part elf; wholly multifaceted, multilayered, and wonderfully mysterious. Mer is a conjuror of fire - a child of the fire - an agent of the Light. Mer will dance ALL night in a fabulous furry technicolor dream, til the sun comes up and beyond, her smile intimating pure rapture. I feel like I've known Mer for ages, such is our kindred connection. The laughter we share is imbued with a zestful silliness that I savor. Do not pass up the opportunity to receive a heart-filled hug from this magnetic, enigmatic spirit!

Meredith is a peculiar megafauna who cries out for justice, rescues tiny kitten-cats stranded in the rain, and in her spare moments (of which there are few) makes lovely toad portraits. She once wore Edmund's hat while he eloquently droned on about the virtues of his cheez-wiz kibbutz – but then she washed her hair thoroughly. You will be delighted, you will be amused, you will be afeared for your minds if ever you witness the spectacle of Mer. There is never any dullness in the presence of this ominous spectral fireball.
