<div>Friends, It is time to ring the alarms! Zombies are coming! Email
everyone you know so they can stay out of harm's way!

As the date draws near it becomes undeniably clear that a zombie hoard
will reach downtown San Francisco on Friday, May 25th around 6pm. This
is unfortunately at the same time as the Critical Mass bike ride. They
must be notified of the impending danger, for the love of all that is holy!

By Wednesday I will be able to publish detailed information about the
route the undead will likely take, projected from topographic and
demographic information of the area. It seems that high traffic shopping
districts are most attractive to these soulless ghouls.

You (and your loved ones who email mob@eatbrains.com) will receive
further details as soon as it is safe to release them.

Do not despair, together we are strong!

A Big Week For Transfolk (repost)

<div>This week has been a historic one in the movement for gender equality and transgender rights.
1) On Tuesday, the City of Berkeley Board of Supervisors voted to include transgender healthcare coverage for city workers. It's not official yet, it still has to go through some red tape but this is a huge step forward in the movement to end healthcare discrimination against trans folks in Berkeley. You can read more about this historic vote at
www.247gay.com/article.cfm
2) San Francisco has a new police commissioner! And guess what, she's TRANS! Her name is Theresa Sparks and in addition to being a fabulous trans advocate, she also has a long history of pushing the envelope to hold cops accountable. Pretty fucking awesome eh?

Latina Transwoman Murdered in Mission District

<div>Tina D’Elia, Hate Violence Survivor Program Director (415) 777-5500 ext. 304
Alexandra Byerly, EL-LA Program Coordinator (415) 864-7278

Community Mourns Murder of Latina Transgender Woman

Requests Attendance at Vigil to Demand Change

San Francisco, California (March 22, 2007) – A Nicaraguan transgender woman, Ruby Rodriguez, 24 years old, was murdered on Friday, March 16, 2007. Her body was found on the corner of Cesar Chavez and Indiana Streets in the Mission District of San Francisco. The murder is currently under investigation by the San Francisco Police Department. Community United Against Violence (CUAV), EL-LA, San Francisco LGBT Community Center, TRANS Project, allies, and community members will hold a community vigil in her honor on Friday, March 23, 2007 at 6:00PM, on the corner of 24th Street and Mission Street in the Mission District.

Organizers request that the community bring a white candle to the vigil. There will also be an additional altar set up on Cesar Chavez and Indiana Street, and community members are encouraged to bring flowers, photographs, cards and good wishes to this site. Let us not forget Ruby. She was an exceptional woman who was intent on improving her life. Ruby participated in various support groups and language classes, and idolized Chicana singer Selena.

This murder comes at the heels of at least two other violent deaths of transgender women of color in the San Francisco Bay Area over the past six months. Transgender people, particularly low-income transgender women of color, are disproportionately poor, homeless, criminalized and imprisoned as a result of systemic discrimination in our daily attempts to access safe housing, healthcare, employment, and education.

Unfortunately, Ruby’s murder is not an exception, but an everyday fear for many transgender people who are targeted and brutalized by institutions and society at large. Our communities mourn Ruby’s death and ask for a renewed commitment to real safety for transgender communities. It is vital that the Mayor’s Office, the San Francisco Police Department, and the District Attorney’s Office work to end the cycles of criminalization, poverty, and violence in transgender communities and communities of color.

Please direct any questions about the vigil to Tina D’Elia or Alexandra Byerly. If anyone has any information regarding Ruby’s murder, please contact Inspector Karen Lynch at (415) 553-1388 or Inspector Tom Cleary at (415) 553-9569 of the SFPD Homicide Unit.</div>

    </a>
<div>I am currently reading "Art and Lies" by Jeanette Winterson, for the first time, and on BART on the way home from a really wonderful night with a lovely friend, in which we had long, amazing conversations about so many things I read this piece. I am feeling really connected to it right now, and wanted to share.

***
Fear of everything. Fear of everything keeps me sealed up against everything. I fear the coloured world on my neutral body. I fear the bright red sun and grass matt green. I fear the cows whose black hides reflect purple. I fear the brimming blue that bees love. I fear the thirteen yellows and the madness of Van Gogh. I fear the sunflower, the straw chair and the boots donkey brown. Every moment intensity collects on the tip of experience as leaves collect rain. The moment swells, bursts, is gone, and passes unnoticed. Intensity dripping away, the moment gone. Isn't that the science of life?
I do notice but I turn away. I turn away from the sharp points of beauty that arrow me through. Sharp beauty able to pierce the thick purple hide. I am in hiding from the slings and arrows of outrageous beauty. It is outrageous that there should be the sepia fox on the tones of snow, his brush sudden-red, his brush shed-blood red on the unmarked snow. Behind him, the Chase, the horses in quick vapour, their mounts half risen in perpetual action, the pink coats and the golden horn that lose their colours in the early setting sun. Dusk frees the fox. The badger wears his night-stripes and snouts among the stars.
Nature is excess. She is beyond the mean. A single rose-hip bursts in praise. What to do with rain, with snow, with sleet, with leaves, with comets, with hail, with lightning, with apples, pears and plums, nature shaking out her excess, the gravity-delighting objects that spill around my head?
Get an umbrella. A folding pocket-sized all weather friend to bounce off the booming world and keep me dry when I should be drenched through. Shall I be dry? Dust-dry, dried flower neat, pressed and labelled, in the right section, saved from moisture and rot. I can live like that, under the rim of consciousness, in the nylon shelter of my own thoughts, safe from beauty's harm. I think therefore I am. Does that mean "I feel therfore I'm not"? But only through feeling can I get at thinking. Those things that move me challenge me. Only a seismic shock can re-order the card index of habit, prejudice and other people's thoughts that I call my own.

In spite of fear, there are talismans I keep, pebbles I turn over in my hand. Remebered stones whose mineral surface is pocketed with gold.
Autumn in a London square, the still-hung air round the Yew, pink-barked. A terrier routs the leaves. The black-yapping dog and the Yew pink-barked. Dog, Yew, the plane tree leaves in piles of tan and the cafe where the coffee steams.
I bought a cup, burnt myself, but glad of coffee and money to buy it. Glad of the cardboard smelling steam and this small space on this wooden bench.
A woman passes and is gone. The birds take turns at the fountain. I have taken my turn at coffee, at bench, both remain, not me. Even now, when I know the moment, the moment is gone. The clock won't stop, though I do, or seem to, holding the coffee as a shield against time. I want to walk so slowly through the square, to be continually walking through the square, the dog still yapping and the Yew pink-barked.

Minimum Wage

<div>minimum wage workers in SF risk having wages CUT!!

congress is voting right now whether to slash my wage (&amp; the wage of many more like me) from $8.82/hr. to $2.13/hr. no joke! please help. explanation follows, skip to the end for what you can do.

as a barista, i earn minimum wage plus tips. i pay half my entire income (including tips) to rent alone. i live in a rent-controlled flat w/ cell-phone towers on top near a busy freeway. don't worry, it's charming. honestly.

san francisco (where i live &amp; work) has a minimum wage of $8.82/hr. for all workers regardless of tip-earning status or size of business. this local law supersedes the current federal minimum of wages of $5.15/hr. &amp; $2.13/hr. for tip-earners. we also of course have a higher-than-national-average cost of living.

tips, by the way, are by definition an extra reward for extra good service (i looked it up). they are not meant to supplement low wages.

last saturday, the u.s. house of representatives passed a bill that would increase the federal minimum wage to $7.25/hr., keep tip-earners at $2.13, &amp; make it illegal for states &amp; cities to mandate higher minimums. this bill is now being discussed by the senate, &amp; if passed, my wage &amp; the wage of others like me could very well drop from $8.82/hr. to $2.13/hr.! how we would survive i do not know.

the bill is also tied up in some strange estate-tax give-aways.

please write your senators now &amp; ask them to oppose this bill. states' rights! local control! congress hasn't increased minimum wage since 1997. if this cloak-&amp;-dagger increase fails, there is a good chance they will pass a more fair one next session.

please forward this message on to others. ex-patriots might also write their home-state senators.

thank you.

J~

last i knew, the bill was known as h.r. 5970 ("minimum wage" bill).

How The Piratebay Raid Changed Sweden

Posted on 07.29.06 14:39

A lot of things happened after the Swedish police attempted to take down The Piratebay. It’s time to recap and look ahead.

Torrentfreak asked Mathias from Piracy Unlimited (and Sweden) to give an overview of the things that happened, and the things that will happen.

First of all, the attack against the Pirate Bay was highly unsuccessful - they only stayed down for a couple of days before they were back in full force. Stronger than ever thanks to the widespread media attention. Subsequently several sources reported that the MPAA initiated the attack, by directly influencing Swedish authorities on governmental level, in this case the Ministry of Justice, to intervene in this specific case, which is considered illegal in Sweden (the term is “minister rule”). It also turned out that the US had threatened to put Sweden on WTO’s black list because they didn’t take the Pirate Bay down, something that should’ve made the Swedish government move even quicker. What they did was that they hinted to the prosecutor in this case that the government ‘expected quick results’ in this matter. The prosecutor had written a PM a while back that it was impossible to convict the Pirate Bay, but after some letters from the MPAA and this not so subtle hint from, what I think was the Secretary of State, he changed his mind.

When Swedish television published documents that proved this, there was some intense outburst for a while in the media, and this only worked to give the piracy movement more sympathies. Their anthology, Copy me, sold out and a new edition will be released in a few days.
piratebay

Piratbyrån, which is a Swedish pro-piracy think tank, had their server seized at the same time and it was in police custody until just the other day. Between the legal efforts to get their equipment back and other other lobbying, Piratbyrån managed to gather similar and supporting groups around Scandinavia to launch an international lobby organization, which was given the name Pro Piracy Lobby. Right now, PPL is in contact with groups in a dozen countries that is interested in joining.

Secondly, the Pirate Party had already existed for about half a year, but all this attention also gave wings in their sails, and they had thousands of new members in a matter of weeks. Suddenly, they had transformed into the largest party without parliament seats. In Sweden, you get seats in the parliament if you get four percent of the votes. As we speak, the Pirate Party has almost as many members as the Green Party, which is a party that supports the current government, and without them, the current government can’t maintain their majority This leads the Pirate Party to believe that if they get into the parliament they can fill such a vital role, and thereby make a big difference. Worth noting is that some unofficial gallups from various sources indicate that the Pirate Party is the most likely party for a Swedish first-time voter to choose on election day.

This success has also led to pirate parties forming in a number of other countries: France, Italy, USA, Belgium, Austria, and very recently also Germany, Spain and Russian. There is also one forming in the UK. Together, they have founded PP-International, which is an international collaboration forum/group to exchange experiences, ideas and such, and Sweden has a very important role here.

The general elections are being held in the end of September, and the election campaigns are becoming hotter and hotter. The Pirate Party has decided that what they have now, ideas and ideology, strategy and policies, is what they’re going to run, no need to do any additions or changes now - all energy is put on the election campaign, and the work will be focused very strongly on this until after the election.

What happens after that will depend completely on how the election turns out, and here are many alternatives:

On one scenario, the Pirate Party gets their 4%, which few within the party doubt they will. In that case they will move to become influential in the forming of the government. In Sweden, the prime minister is elected by the parliament, which means that he or she must have a majority of the MPs behind him/her. No party ever gets that many seats, and so, a party that will form a government must seek support from another party, who then gets a situation where they can influence the government. This is a position that the Pirate Party seeks. Their parliamentary work will depend heavily on whether they succeed or not.

Outside the parliament, there is much to be done. If a party gets more than 2.5% of the votes, they will have state subsidiaries that allow them to employ a few people full-time to work for them. The amount of money rises with, I think, every extra .5% of the total votes. These will of course be used to have people working full time on strenghthening the party, and help with the local groups - up to now, all members of the Pirate Party works without pay for this idea that they support. A few full-timers would be nice to do alot of the foot-work.

Also, more and more local groups will be formed, and these will do the work locally, mostly making the Pirate Party seen in their surroundings, as the Pirate Party won’t run in local elections. There will be a lot of local organizing being done.

Also, they will probably put down alot of work in helping the pirate parties around the world via PP-International.

In the long run, the Pirate Party will aim for the election to the European Parliament in 2009, where it’s easier to get in. A party that receives 1% of the votes in an election has the right to have their ballots placed at voting locations by the election authorities at that place. Thus, there is a good possibility the Pirate Party gains even more in the EP elections than in the Swedish general ones.

In any way, there is an exciting few years we have ahead of us.</div>

<div>I got off from work about an hour and a half early tonight, because one of my clients cancelled last minute. So I head over to the Church Street Muni Metro Station, and get onto the train to go home. The train is packed, and almost immediately after the doors close somebody yells out "HE'S GOT A GUN!!!". Everybody, including myself, drops to the floor. The scream came from the other end of the train, and I find the best cover that I can without pushing anybody out of the way. The train is still in the station but the doors are all closed, and a bunch of people are screaming, and some were banging on the conductor's window, yelling for him to open the doors.
The doors open, and here is where you really get to see people for what they are. Lots of people start rushing at the door, nearly trampling others in their mad dash to personal safety. A couple of people in front of me get knocked to the floor, and I helped one guy up while an elderly women was grabbed by someone else and brought to her feet. Then this big bald guy a few feet behind me jumps up onto the seats, and climbs through that opening near the train door where the seats end, pushing people out of his way and jumping out of the train. Then the whole lot of us make our way quickly to the emergency exit and this same big bald asshole stands in the middle of the exit and starts yelling to his friend who was still near the train. So first, in an act of pure cowardice, he pushes all these people out of his way to save himself...and then creates a fucking block in the exit.

It was unbelievable.

I went upstairs, and saw a bunch of people looking over the balcony at the incident. I knew that the smart thing was to just get the hell out of there, but my curiosity got the better of me (as it is often does), and I stood behind the people who were watching a took a look. I saw a bunch of people still standing around the train, and the conductor was yelling angrily at somebody, but I couldn't see who, and I heard a bunch of people talking about heading back to the train. So, I am guessing that either the guy with the gun got away, or never actually had a gun. I don't know if someone thought that they saw a gun and reacted, or if it was somebody's idea of a joke, or what.

But, after everything was over (at least for me, I soon got out of the station and got a drink), I must say, I was really pleased to find that I kept my head throughout it all. You never know how you will react when faced with the possibility of death, and it was really reassuring to know that I'm not the type to totally panic and cause more harm.</div>

Great idea, this is.

=============================================

I just started a new tribe called BDSM Tribe Pointers specifically to provide a listing of all BDSM-related tribes on Tribe.net. This is not a discussion tribe, just a listing of names and urls for other tribes.

It looks as if we're going to have to make our tribes private in order to survive the new Tribe Terms of Service and continue to operate. Private tribes do not show up on searches, so it's going to be difficult for new Tribe members to find us if they want to. Hopefully, at least this tribe will be able to remain public so that anyone looking for BDSM content will find it, and subsequently be able to find the rest of our tribes.

The url is tribes.tribe.net/BDSMTribePointers

Please spread the word; there's not even any way to post a listing about this any more without putting it into a regular category, which is just about guaranteed to get it deleted.

<div>Vermont was one of the most beautiful places I have ever been in my life. 14 inches of snow on my second night there. Being in the middle of fucking nowhere, sledding, snowballs, wet socks, wood and string sculptures along nearly frozen streams, a kiddie pool, a Quiddich field, Jesus Christ Superstar, midnight breakfast, impromtu Cabaret medalies, juice boxes, frozen pants, chasing liquor with snow, cute strangers with small beds, gender neutral bathrooms, 99 bottles with a matress in the elevator, boys fighting topless in a library, Jon Stewart, strange tales of adoption, discovery, and reunion, and more beer and whiskey than I thought to be possible.
I am so not ready to be back home yet.</div>

<div>This weekend I spent quite a few hours with these two guys who had recently moved here from New York. They were part of the NY gay drag scene, and taught me the best expression ever.
When someone says something that you strongly agree with, or expresses a feeling or opinion that you share as well, tell them. But, instead of saying, for example:

"I totally feel you on that"

say:

"I'm totally licking your balls."

When asking someone if you are on the same wavelength, you say:

"You licking my balls on this?"

I think that this is fantastic. It sounds wonderful in conversation, and flows suprisingly well. If anyone reading this is licking my balls right now, you should totally adopt it.</div>
