Re: Using guitar to learn Oud? (in Oud) I'm not an expert by any means but I played guitar for years before picking up the Oud a couple of months ago. Yeah they're different but I know playing guitar helped me tremendously and if you use a risha and tune your guitar like an Oud then of ... read more

Re: Amplification and tone (in Oud) I don't doubt that the K & K pickup works well ( usually) because so many people have recommended it. Unfortunately the one I got only worked halfway.

Isn't it nice to have people like Carmine that don't mind giving out helpful information fro... read more

Re: Amplification and tone (in Oud) Have you been able to compare the "Pick up the world" pickup to the K & K?

K & K pickup issues (in Oud) I just tried to put on my K & K twin pickup tonight and one of the pickups didn't work. Occasionally it would pop and work for a split second. Something's definitely loose in there. Anyone else have issues? I'll be calling mid-east on Mon. to see ... read more

Ok, I'm back in action again. Here is big doum and a couple of other drums. I have a 13" Remo Fiberskyn on order for BIg Doum. The one in the middle will have a Skyndeep head and the one on the right has a thin goatskin.

Here are two of my latest drums, they were made to shrink to the modern standard darbuka size. I plan on putting Remo Skyndeep heads on them. Unfortunately the kiln is out of order for a few weeks and these drums as well as Big Doum are on hold for the moment.

The drum has been glazed and just needs to be fired one last time. Glaze is a mixture of different types of raw materials dug up from the earth that are ground into a powder. Powders of different types are mixed with metal oxides(colorants) before adding water to create a slurry that you can dip the pot in, pour on the pot or paint on the pot. The water is absorbed by the porous and underfired clay body and it eventually evaporates away leaving a dry powder coating on the surface of the pot.
