And their feet move...
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 4:21 PMAnd their feet move
rhythmically, as tender
feet of Cretan girls
danced once around an
altar of love, crushing
a circle in the soft
smooth flowering grass
Sappho
The Greek is soooooo much more beautiful than the translation, but oh! do you ever feel that you are dancing in a different time altogether?
No, I don't mean I shouldn't be in this time, only that--for an instance--I am absorbed, or sucked, or somehow intensely transported to some other realm. I guess people convey or carry this sentiment in entirely different ways, and words, like Sappho's, and recently, dancing, do this for me. We only have portions of Sappho's volumes, a small and sparse look at someone whom the world sees differently than she really existed--I cannot help but think of all the women, like Sappho, who have crushed a circle in the smooth flowering grass with their tender feet!
