And mind of child...
the year we make contactMon, January 4, 2010 - 12:22 PM
i have to admit it's been good to me this time around (how refreshing!)...just got back from a lovely few days in NY with the folks, despite the air temperature in the smoking lounge it was pretty great. got surprised with tickets to the tim burton exhibit at the MOMA, and that was rad. insanely crowded, but rad. and had an amazing-dinner-i-could-never-afford-myself in midtown afterwards. manhattan is so sanitized these days, i don't think i'll ever get used to it.
got loads of new clothes. i feel like an old guy getting excited about clothes for christmas, i really do. but wtf, i've been schlepping around in worn-out work clothes from yesteryear long enough. i got that first day of school feeling now and i intend to enjoy it. it's also about time to lose the starving artist look and start presenting myself as the successful art director type. fake it till you make it, yo.
attended the company party for the lighting crew last night, and had a nice time. it takes a little getting used to to actually 'being' at the party as opposed to scrambling to set it up, making yourself scarce for 4 hours, and then scrambling to tear it all down without being seen by precious guests. but, after half a pound of free sushi and a few rounds of company booze, i managed to settle in. heard i might be getting a raise, which is encouraging. i'm certainly overdue for a review....
we also have sort of a tradition of pulling a taco truck into the warehouse for company events, and that's pretty hilarious.
so i'm attacking my next project full force, building miniature sets for a stop-motion animation pilot. it feels pretty damn good to be doing what i set out to do just a little over a year after getting to the bay. particularly considering the crash landing. what's the deal with moving to california and all hell breaking loose? i don't know, and i doubt i'll ever find out since i have no intention of leaving ever again. felt like home when i got back to SFO...that's a good feeling after the past few years. fuck michigan, anyways.
naturally the miniature gig comes with a miniature paycheck, but it's pretty damn satisfying. at least for the next month or so. no idea when this one will run out, although the creators have asked me to help with some of the shooting and that'd be swell.
so, hope the coming year finds you well as well. personally i almost never celebrate western new year, but i am planning to hit chinatown next month for their version. firecrackers and dragons suit me better than champagne and disco balls anyways.

|I dunno, atom and disco just kinda sound natural together...|
He's an enigma, that one. I'm still wrapping my brain around he "hates musicals and camp and glam."
I dunno how the hell he is going to make movies with that attitude.
You do seem to be on a roll.....
stoked for you...it's all happening.
The new year is off to a much better start around these parts...better than last week, anyways! J found out he got a job today (his first interview out of a job, and he scored it). Less stress is what was needed, and bada bing...just like that, some stress was lifted. Therefore, my new year is not signing off with a BANG!, but a much needed......SIGH......
Chinese New Year is much more of a communal celebration, and so colorful. They know how to party (but I hate those damned snapper firework things).
Happy happy 2010You have heard of the great Chinese New Year scavenger hunt in San Francisco, right?
I've actually never been to Chinese New Year in the city. Maybe I should actually go this time. I hear the parade is awesome.
