RE: RR Primer This Weekend

Dear RR Friends,

I recently read a post about Burning Man and how "fun" it is. I've had lots of fun on the playa, but for some reason, I tend to find more challenge there than fun.

This weekend in Recycled Rainbow Primer- it's a dress rehearsal for Recycled Rainbow later this year (September). This weekend we'll be sawing wood, drilling holes, nailing things, drinking beer and having that elusive "fun" while we challenge ourselves.

Anyone who's built a project for something like Burning Man knows that being able to build it at least once before you drive your materials out to Nevada or down to Canton, OH is absolutely imperative. Last year while we were building the spires at Recycled Rainbow we learned how to do it once we finished the last spire. After that we realized how easy they were to build- we could have built three more in a fraction of the time.

Camping with power tools presents several challenges. Finding electricity, getting things done in the brief sunlight you have, not getting too cranky or dehydrated, and keeping your cool while trying to figure out how to actually build that thing you've been planning all year. It's an opportunity to finally get out there and do it- without all the crazy of RR going on around you.

Is it fun? Maybe. It's definately challenging. After finishing, whether you succeeded or not, you've learned a great deal- and when you get back to the day job on Monday, you're a little better prepared to deal with the unexpected. You improvise better, the little things tend not to get you bent out of shape so much, and you have a nice sunburn on your bald-spot.

I hope to see you all this weekend. I'll be the guy building the big circle, dropping a ton of f-bombs and trying to keep dry.

Luckily, it looks like this weekend is going to be BEAUTIFUL.
