Visiting SF- what would you do?
Wed, April 9, 2008 - 9:07 AMSo this is my call out to all you San Fran residents and lovers...
What are your favorite hidden places in the city (to wander through, see, interact with, eat at, whatever)??
I'm open to all sorts of suggestions!
Also, is there anything specific going on next week- any good shows, festivals, etc?
OK, show me what you got!!!!!

If she's got transport and is somewhat the 'outdoorsy type' I'd opt for cruising up north to hit the redwoods stand in Muir Woods and mebbe stomping around the Marin Headlands for a few hours. The park is awesome and the Headlands have some of the best views of the city (also a plus if she's into photography).
Restaraunts Stinking Rose - kinda different, nice Kennedy's Pub and Curry House - different in another kind of way A crepe shop of your choice - outsider folks seem surprised by them Will try and ponder for a few more 'different' things later, gotta go to work. |

I've already planned a Muir Woods and Napa trip and probably one road trip south...
I'm looking for unique ideas for things to do in San Francisco proper. |

Cliff House and Sutro Bathhouse are places I've always loved to visit..... was much more fun when the Musee Mecanique was there as well - that is now over on Pier 45, I believe.

Definitely go by Sutro Baths. It used to be much more interesting when I was little and it was a bit less eroded and there was a land bridge out to the big rock out there, but it's still a magical spot and a trip to imagine this huge magnificent bathhouse.
As long as you're in the area, hit up Fort Miley (at the west end of Clement Street, next to the VA Medical Center - people.tribe.net/lena/phot...5b12a8513b & people.tribe.net/lena/phot...d558f575b) - there are trails all the way down the cliff to Land's End, a rocky beach with crazy chunks of discarded concrete (including an entire kitchen room - I'm not kidding) and a view of the Golden Gate Bridge. I've climbed from there over to the Sutro Baths before, so you can see both in one trip, though the climb is tiring. If you want something a bit less challenging climb-wise, China Beach has a beautiful view of the bridge and Marin headlands, and a view of the mansions on the cliffs above you. Robin Williams lives there, and you can see the head of a pink brontosaurus rising over the fence at his place on the way to the beach. Gotta go to lunch, have lots more outdoorsy urban hiking stuff for you if you want. |

I second that hike along Land's End, its lovely there.
I like taking people to the Vesuvio in North Beach for its history with the Beat Generation and the cute, funky bar that it is. www.vesuvio.com/ How about dinner at Asia SF? Now thats a unique SF experience! www.asiasf.com/ |

Kitaro Sushi = YUM! They make the best agedashi tofu I've ever had, with their own house-made tofu. It's like custard inside. Green Apple Books and Booksmith are my fave bookstores, and Osento Day Spa is a bathhouse just for women. Hope you have a good time!

Yes, Kitaro! I second that. Inexpensive sushi and still very much the yum! Geary btwn 21st & 22nd - I used to eat there 1-3x/day when I worked at the VA. They have a sister store called Kiki Sushi on 9th St btwn Lincoln & Judah.
Now if you want to go even fresher, but significantly more expensive, there's Zushi Puzzle :: Art in Sushi on Lombard. I've eaten there 3 times now - my friend Erin took me the first time, I took Pi there for Valentine's Day the second, and Erin took me there again the third (because I can't really afford it otherwise). It is the freshest, tastiest, melt-in-your-mouth delight, ever. Be sure to sit at the bar so you can talk to Roger, the head sushi chef, and watch him make everything. A HUGE treat. |

Drinks at Tommy's or at Trader Sam's on Geary, around 24th or so. Tommy's has the best margaritas in the city hands down, Trader Sam's is a couple blocks west and is the tiki bar that invented the mai tai.
For that matter, the Buena Vista up by Ghiradelli Square is the bar that invented the Irish coffee. *ponders* What days next week? (trying to think of events going on) |
