(events » nightlife)
Saturday, December 8, 2007 - 9:00 PM
Pi-rem presents a night with
Miles Maeda
Supported by DJs Rafa & Sir Round
Miles Maeda was one of the pioneering members of Chicago‘s club and rave scene in the early 90’s. Originally hailing from Hawaii, Miles‘ influence in the Midwest was unique and made longlasting impressions. His classical background and training inspired him to experiment with many different styles and genres which shone forth in his prolific studio productions and live performances, enriching Chicago for many years.
With his partners DJ Colette and Josh Werner (Antenna), he co-founded the 'Material' night at Shelter, a weekly event supporting and featuring new house music from '94-'96. It provided a home for artists like Derrick Carter, Mark Farina, Sneak, Diz, Cajmere, Moodymann, Herbert and many others.
He also develop an ambient/downtempo night, 'Atmospheric Audio Chair', along with Josh and Ken Waagner (Hit It) from '93-'95 which became a favorite haunt of one Mixmaster Morris.
And his current residency at the Smartbar, celebrating 8 years (1998-2006), has also been an anchor in the new house music scene along with nights featuring Smartbar co-residents DJ Heather, DJ Colette, Kaskade and Justin Long (No Assembly Firm).
Miles' creative projects continued to blossom after his relocation to California where he created such works as 'Things Are Things' EP (Aroma), 'Tell Me Why' EP (Lowdown), and 'The New House Sound of Chicago' (Igloo/Smartbar/Shure). His current projects include the 'Three Easy Pieces‘ EP (Dae), 'I’ts My World‘ EP (Bump) and 'I’ll Be A Freak For You' remix for Swirl People (Aroma).

JAZZTRONICA -CD Release Party. Dec. 14 at Pi-rem
(events » live music)
Friday, December 14, 2007 - 9:00 PM
Pi-rem is thrilled to announce that we will be celebrating the release of the album: Jazztronica - Live at Pi-rem on Friday December 14th. This night shall feature live performances by the Jazztronica musicians and dance performances by Gypsy Caravan Dance Company. Accompanying the performers - DJ SomRas.
The doors shall open at 9pm. The tickets are $8 and shall be available at the door.
The album features a number of exciting musicians: Derek Sims, Keith Schriener (Auditory Sculpture), Clay Giberson, Luis Tetaje (Acroyear) and Skip vonKuske (Cellotronik). Jazztronica has been a series designed to create a musical community between electronic musicians and jazz musicians interested in expanding their creative palettes. The album itself is a product of synthesizing improvised jazz with live electronic music that was recorded live during the Jazztronica sessions at Pi-rem.
Derek Sims is an in-demand trumpeter in the local jazz and classical music scene, as well as a coveted player with more experimental projects (Dahlia, Auditory Sculpture). Sims has traveled the world and played in over 40 countries with numerous projects. He still finds the time to teach privately and directs the Metropolitan Youth Symphony Jazz and Combo Programs, as well as sitting in as a clinician and faculty member of the Mel Brown Summer Jazz Camps.
For eight years, Keith Schreiners electronic music and experimental auditory sculptures have been the backbone of Portlands ever-burgeoning electronic/dj scene. His wildly successful days in Dahlia (five years of packed Tuesday nights at the Ohm) were only the starting point into a career that has included numerous production, albums, and collaboration opportunities.
Well traveled geographically and musically, keyboardist/composer Clay Giberson's artistic talent and musicianship are coming to the forefront, A Southwest Washington native, he studied in Coral Gables, Florida, University of Miami ( B.M. Cum Laude, Studio Music and Jazz) and New York City, New York University (M.M. Magna Cum Laude, Music Technology) where he studied with Jim McNeely, Fred Hersch and Vince Maggio. Having been influenced by all types of music, Clay draws from these idioms in his own compositions and in the interpretation of others. Currently he is a member of the bands "Upper Left Trio" and "Go By Train" based out of Portland, Oregon. He is on the faculty at Clackamas Community College where he teaches electronic music and jazz piano.
Acroyear is Luis Tataje. Local foreign nationalist creating sonic landscapes in PDX and SFO since 1998. Dark, visceral , sometimes a-rhythmic but always thought - provoking. Creating dubplates for the former Portland based dub label BSI Records(Systemwide/Muslimgauze/BeWa/Twilight Dub Circus) to doing various remixing projects local and abroad. Blurbs : "BLUDGEONING BASS AND BREAKS" - PORTLAND MERCURY "RIB-CRACKIN' BASS AND LUSH ATMOSPHERICS TO BE HAD" - BSI RECORDS "LESS BEAT DRIVEN BUT FORMING BIGGER SOUND WAVES ACROYEAR'S CREATIONS SWIRLED OVER THE OFTEN CLOSED-EYED, HEAD - NODDING AUDIENCE" - THE OREGONIAN.
Skip vonKuske has been in Portland since 1994. In that time he's worked as a cellist with many many artists and fears leaving their names off a list, but here are some highlights. The Portland Cello Project, Vagabond Opera, The Oregon Symphony, Pink Martini, Smoky Robinson Jennifer Batten ( Jeff Beck, Michael Jackson ),Trans Siberian Orchestra, Nu Shooz Orchestra, Randy Cannon, The Stolen Sweets, Michael Allen Harrison, Stephanie Schneiderman, Carmina Pirana/Luna, Ashleigh Flynn, Susie Blue, Myshkin's Ruby Warblers. Skip vonKuske brings a perspective to recording and live performance based on his experiences as a songwriter/guitarist as well as 31 years of cello study. He's been improvising on cello ,guitar, and bass for over 20 years. Cellotronik was born 2 years ago when he began working with Reason, but gestated for the previous 3 years when the RC20 Loop Station entered his rack of tricks.
A mass of swaying hips, undulating bellies, hands upon hands upon hands with arms moving snake-like, strangely synchronous; watch closely as these powerfully sensuous women wrap you in their web of enchanting improvisation. Haunting horns calling you from the desert, earthly drums bring you back to the beginning of time; forlorn melodies sung from the deepest of souls, Gypsy Caravan invites you to join them on a journey back to the cradle of civilization. Woolen yarns, billowing silk, and jangling metal add texture to delight the senses, reminding you of the millions of women who came before us. A tribute to the past, created in the present, borrowing from many cultures and full of today's urban spirit, feel your tribal soul coming to life, echoing our cries for life and freedom.
We hope you are as excited as we are about this upcoming party & album. Do join us in celebrating this special event.

Pi-rem. 2 Year w/CHEB i SABBAH, Adam Hurst, Serpentine & Global Ruckus. Sat. May 31
(events » nightlife)
Saturday, May 31, 2008 - 9:00 PM
Cheb i Sabbah (SF/Paris) is a renowned international legacy as a pioneer and visionary in the exciting, fast-changing world of trans-global music as an artist, producer and DJ. From the energy of South Asian and Moghrebi dance music, Cheb i Sabbah and his 1002 NIGHTS brings the many facets of the outernational dance-floor vibration to life. He moved to Paris in the 1960s, and, more or less by accident, became a DJ. His complex cultural background may have prompted him to mix musical styles. By the late 1980s, he was pushing boundaries on the dance floor, seeking ways to work African, Asian, and Arabic music into the mix; using instruments such as the doumbek, sarangi, harmonium, oud, violin, and mrindangam. Then, as the world music movement unfolded, Cheb-i-Sabbah began recording traditional and classical musicians himself and used those tracks to create new works — effectively, music "composed" by a DJ. Sabbah's music has been remixed by Karsh Kale, Transglobal Underground, Loop Guru, and Bassnectar.

Serpentine Dance Company - Aradia, Lucretia*Renee & Nagasita
Serpentine is Portlands Premiere Theatrical Fire Fusion Bellydance Troupe founded in 2005 by Aradia and Lucretia*Renee. This innovative duet transforms into a triplet in 2008 welcoming NagaSita. Together, they merge their passions of art and dark tribal bellydance in a unique exploration of self expression and goddess devotion. Serpentine explores the ancient art of storytelling through spectacle and ritual; each performance is a living vivid painting. Along with writing unique choreography, each artist creates their own costumes, stage props, and firedancing tools. Using eclectic musical influences and collaborating with various performers and musicians, each set is a tale of its own. The triple goddess awakens in the form of estatic dance, healing and confronting the taboos and limitations of our time and culture. Serpentine honors, borrows, and blends old myths entrancing audiences across the Northwest and beyond. Ignite and share in the unveiling process of reclaiming the dark and spinning back into the light.
