They miss me! They really miss me!

March 25, 2004
i sure hope GRADUATE SCHOOL gives eric the kind of pleasure he's always wanted me to give him. despite the constant drunkeness, druggery, and $20 bills in the bumhole, i still wouldn't give in to his lecherous advances. maybe GRADUATE SCHOOL really does feel as good as i would have to eric. but can professor crandall really look it in the eyes while he's climaxing, knowing full well his new partner doesn't know how to play riddle of the ring, let alone scattergories? look away, eric, look away....

Eric and I used to throw things. At other stuff. Now he's too busy to throw things with me.

I taught Eric everything he knows about molecular phylogenetics. Now he keeps pressuring me to help him generate new, more powerful computer algorithms for constructing phylogenetic trees from homologous nucleotide sequences. But I'm just too wrapped up with my work in proteomics to bother right now.

about me
Right now... I'm doing the graduate student thing, working on a dissertation that looks at how the larvae of marine animals move between populations. It's pretty good gig, since I've gotten to go to French Polynesia and Indonesia so far, and am planning a trip to Fiji, Vanuatu and Samoa this year. Also, I'm just geeking out, doing Janana Yoga, because I get a kick out of it. The world seen through the lens of ecology and evolution is very very interesting, and sort of greenish-blue.

My cup's pretty full right now - I gots a cool wife, cool job, cool cats. I'm looking forward to moving back to the west side of the US - to be in a place, and near people that I did not appreciate nearly enough until I moved....

Methods (to my madness)

Just finalized my ticket to the Philippines.

Going to be in the Philippines for a year!

SCUBA diving, and sweating, and getting Dengue fever, and sweating, and eating Balut, and sweating.

Huh.

Craziness.

Should be interesting.

Just wanted to mention that my first real scientific article came out in Molecular Ecology back in January. I was in no mood to celebrate at the time, because my cat had just died. The title is "Contrasting demographic history and phylogeographic patterns in two Indo-Pacific gastropods". I know, exciting, isn't it? Check out the abstract below. And if you read it, it just gets better. You'll be on the edge of your seat by the end of the introduction (I can email the PDF to you if you really ... read more

On January 2nd, our cat Bagheera died in our Somerville apartment. All signs point to a quick and painless death, possibly a cardiomyopathy - something that is relatively common in male cats. The catsitter said he was healthy and happy and jumping on her shoulders just that morning.

Bagheera was the friendliest cat I've ever met. At parties he would make the rounds, rubbing at people’s ankles and sitting on laps, until everyone had to comment on how friendly he was. He developed a wide net... read more

From the way the fundies carry on about marriage, you would think that a wedding represents a major developmental change in one's life history, like two gametes fusing to become an embryo. This is patently not the case, in fact a wedding is closer to the comedic stereotype of two people deciding to conform to a societal norm, at least outwardly, for the sake of convenience and social advancement. But, hopefully, its not really that either. Here's what a wedding really can be: two people ma... read more

It was almost two weeks ago that I was a very happy fool in Central Park, listening to the audio stylings of Underworld.

The next day I ate a buffalo kebab in Boulder, Colorado.

No kidding.
