My Testimonials

December 25, 2007
I think that I will always count a party as good if Eddie is there. Not one of those fancy "look what I'm wearing" parties, but the parties where you share music and thoughts and love. He is my brother though I don't see him often. I remember our times up in the White Mountains which is my chapel and my ground, and my special place. So lovely to have met him there....and true.

"For whom, for what was that bird singing? No mate, no rival was watching it; what made that bird sit at the edge of the lonely wood and pour it's music into nothingness?" - George Orwell, 1984

notes
Rootsucker Records announces the release of “…Into Doves Of Grey”, the latest offering from songsmith Eddy Dyer. Recorded over July 4th weekend in 2007 by Kevin Kandel at Near The Portal Studios, “…Into Doves Of Grey” is a return to the solo-acoustic format of 1999’s “Explosion Alone”, only this time mixed and mastered by Kramer, the legendary innovator behind Daniel Johnston, Galaxy 500, Low, and 1995 “Producer Of The Year” (Rolling Stone Magazine).

With thirteen original tracks augmented by a blistering interpretation of (fellow Kramer alumni) Sonic Youth’s “Mote”, “…Into Doves Of Grey” is laden with themes of spirituality, from scathing rants on religious dogma (“Snakes Out Of Boston”, “Jesus Christ”), to candid reflections on the human condition (“Jennifer”, “Song For Jamie”), to abstract but potent pagan imagery (“God’s Baby Sister” and the album’s first single, “Deep Dark Night”).

The quirky title has roots in the writings of renowned novelist and fellow Lowell native Jack Kerouac – as Dyer explains;

“I think it was in Dr. Sax…anyway I remember reading about a great serpent getting ready to swallow the world, and at the last minute it dissolved into millions of grey doves – that always stuck with me, how, individually we aren’t evil at all, just imperfect – the real evil happens when we form into these big, unthinking entities.”

BACKGROUND

Eddy Dyer released his debut album, Explosion Alone, on Boston’s That Promising Seadog Media label in 1999, an intricate landscape of sound combining blues, folk, and Beat poetry with the spare, psychedelic sounds of Syd Barrett's solo work.
His second album, 'BUTTERFLY MEDICINE', released in 2001 on Smokin Moon Records, showcased Dyer's sense of dark whimsy, born of Brian Wilson and The Flaming Lips...
In 2004, Eddy released 'Eddy Dyer and The Walking Shoe Revival', featuring Eddy's most prolific collection of songs to date…
Currently at work on the follow-up to that album with longtime producer Jeff Hall, Dyer is collaborating with guitarist Earl Slick (Bowie, John Lennon fame), and legendary avant-garde jazz pianist Mike Garson (also of Bowie fame, not to mention Stan Getz, Stanley Clark, Nine Inch Nails, The Smashing Pumpkins and most recently The Polyophonic Spree).

Also on the horizon is the realization of "Teardrops Made Of Melted Crayon", the second album by the Walking Shoe Revival, featuring contributions from guitarist Earl Slick (Bowie, John Lennon fame), legendary avant-garde jazz pianist Mike Garson (also of Bowie fame, not to mention Stan Getz, Stanley Clark, Nine Inch Nails, The Smashing Pumpkins and most recently The Polyophonic Spree).

Also, be sure to check out "Out Of Balance", a documantary about Exxon/Mobil by Joe Public Films and featuring two songs from "Butterfly Medicine"; the title track and "Far Away Love Song"...

Dyer remains coy about the release of the followup to 2005's breakout "Eddy Dyer and The Walking Shoe Revival", saying "it will be out when there are the right channels available, and the right distribution...if you wanna hear it so bad then find me a label that won't dick me around!"

Fortunately, we can hear snippets of the next record, "Teardrops Made Of Melted Crayon", at www.myspace.com/walkingshoerevival .

His second album, Butterfly Medicine, released in 2001 on Smokin Moon Records, showcased Dyer's sense of dark whimsy, born of Brian Wilson and The Flaming Lips...

In 2004, Eddy released "Eddy Dyer and The Walking Shoe Revival", featuring Eddy's most prolific collection of songs to date, from the simmering, colossal funk of "Running From The Rumble" (eerily enough written on September 11, 2001, hours before the terrible events of that day) to the jeering, snot-nosed political punk of "American Mess", to the gratuitous emotion of "Can I Get An Amen" (with a stellar, Stax Records-worthy lead vocal by Lowell songstress Jen Kearney <www.jenkearney.com>.

With a disdain for the industry almost as famous as his music, Dyer has been making a name for himself on the festival circuit, with and without The Walking Shoe Revival, to RAVE REVIEWS FROM EVERY DIRECTION. With the appeal of an outsider, Dyer has been making tiny waves with real reverberations, and is sure to take his musical statements somewhere as fresh and eccentric as fits his reputation as an adventurer...

reviews

"Holy shit Eddy...this is AMAZING music!" - Kramer (Shimmy Disc Records, producer for Sonic Youth, Ween, Lou Reed, Butthole Surfers, Daniel Johnston, Galaxy 500 and many more)

"Fucking brilliant, mate; I loved the bit without the pants!"
- Billy Bragg

"I can't beleive you had me singing Twisted Sister in Spanish." - Pete Seeger

"Eddy himself sounds like an orchestra, if he's in your area DO NOT MISS OUT!"
- DJ Visitor

"Eddy's music will grab you by the throat, yet the breath of his lyrics will gently kiss the lips of your soft and tender spirit as his music finger paints the curves of your soul while you dance like a monkey with pop rocks up your ass till the sun comes up and screams at your eyes till they bleed sleep!......and that is what Eddy Dyer is all about!
Really, his music will fuck with your mind and make you wanna move you're stank ass behind! - Che Arrajj

"har har har dee har har..yooze so bad ass .....yer Lobster People song KICKS ASS!"! -Tharah Montefusco

"'Eddy Dyer and the Walking Shoe Revival' showcases Dyer's ability to go beyond the man-and-his-guitar world, and marry his solo sound with a full band. The Lowell-based Dyer is a natural musician whose taste and sound are as eclectic as they come....He has folk, rock, hip-hop, punk, psychedelic ’60s rock and more at his arsenal....Dyer’s music covers the emotional spectrum of life."
- Ritchie Victorino writing for Hippo Press

"Explosion alone is musically, lyrically, and artistically one of the best damn albums you've never heard. Eddy brings passion to every track and isn't afraid to show emotion, without sounding the least bit emo. Do yourself a favor and pick this album up, and then go to his website at www.eddydyer.com and tell him that he needs to rerecord and release Jupiter's War...Trust me, he does."
- Chip writing for Amazon.com

"Music to slip into a coma by..." - Darrin Fryns

Eddy Dyer’s music is eternally in flux. Refusing to focus in on one specific sound, Dyer experiments and blends his music into various genres. At one moment he’ll be singing “Wowy” (a slow psychedelic guitar solo featuring choral voices), and in the next audiences may witness a complete transformation into something like “Through the Backyard Breeze” (a pacey, beat influenced fun track that features an affable handclap rhythm) Dyer is unpredictable and talented...

Not hesitant about showing his disdain for the mainstream music industry, Dyer’s sometimes-risky sound reflects his independent mindset. Unafraid to break from the conventions of singer/songwriters, Dyer allows unbridled emotion to creep into his music.

Planning to release an album that pleases more of his psychedelic audience, Dyer’s forthcoming release is tentatively deemed “Teardrops Made of Melted Crayons.” According to his past trends of never sticking with one sound, the album is sure to vary significantly from any of his previous works."
-Lauren Proctor, NorthEast In Tune Magazine

"Eddy is one of the most amazing artists I have ever had the pleasure of performing with. A prolific and engaging songwriter juxtaposing social commentary and abstract idealism. "
- Steve K.

"As a young boy I remember hearing music blasting from a boombox outside my house on the streets of Lowell MA...looking out the window I saw a little kid wearing a jean-jacket walking by & cranking his tunes, oblivious to the world around him. For some reason the vision intrigued me, and I'd watch for him whenever I'd hear the approaching squelch of his radio. Years later that little boy became the musician who penned what is in my opinion one of the best psych-folk records EVER, in "Explosion Alone". Why this album hasn't yet received the praises of the high church of indie-rock acceptance while artists like Banhart and Stevens are riding high on such surf is beyond me completely. The lyrics, melodies and arrangements are other-worldly and beautifully soulful. The hooks are sharp enough to make grown men weep and the exuberance for music that Eddy personified in childhood, completely absorbed in his world of song, has never diminished, only grown. Lowell Massachusetts will one day be known to the world not only as Jack Kerouac's hometown, but as the birthplace of one of the most important musicians in the new millenium, Eddy Dyer. "

- Dave Iversen writing for Amazon.com

"Eddy, that 'Amen' song is aaawesome"
- Michael Troy

"Eddie Dyer’s 'Walking Shoe Revival' is an impressive collection of songs that, for the better part of the CD, stick to a good blues feel, while not afraid to step outside of the music box to serve up sweet tricks. Mr. Dyer, a Lowell, Massachusetts native is a heartfelt musician who wears his guitar on his sleeve.
The opener, 'Running From The Rumble', sets a nice tone for the listener to delve into the sounds. Dyer starts the song of with a scat style phrase while moving you through with an infectious groove throughout. I particularly like the drum pattern in this one.
Backyard Breeze has a nice “Porch Blues” feel, summer lives on all year round in this cut! I’m still trying to figure out who the turtle is?
'American Mess' is a rebel gone wild & it brings Dyer back to his punk roots. The song displays some depth in charter with a cool Middle Eastern sounding riff in there. It’s a great hard rocking protest number… That’s my special report-
The next cut, "Baila, Gitana, Baila', is an instrumental of which I found beautiful. There is not much more that comes to mind.
Track 6, 'Can I Get An Amen', features the first guest appearance & this belongs to Ms. Jen Kearney (www.jenkearney.com). It is as if she walked through the door to say hello, while in retrospect, pay homage to her Poorhouse past with this one & she didn’t even write it! The solo is very emotional here.
'Feel Invisible' has modern rock angst to it; you may want to crank her at maxim volume as suggested on the CD.
'Slow To A Glide' features Van Lawton on vocals; I may have been getting ready to crash while listening to this one… Van’s voice supplied a nice soft pillow-
The next track with a vocal performance by Nathan Pyritz... 'Still Onward He Floated' fits oddly in the mix here for me but I still enjoyed it.
I could feel a great deal of sadness while Dyer sang Laura, Laura, Laura.
'Her Highness, Princess Splice' lightens up the mood here with a playful fun melody. Bonnie Rovics' flute stands out on this one!

'Silence In The Center Of Town'? I can’t fail to mention that I loved the ZZ Top 'A-hahahaha!' that sets this tune into gear… Nice guitar catchy tune-
This album is a must listen for the inquisitive music fan who is not spoon fed by the thrills of the day. Eddy Dyer uses his music to convey his message. His guitar flows throughout giving the listener a compass while on the journey-"

One.

During the fall of 2003, my father, Tom Dyer, Sr., ended up at Lowell General Hospital after a frightening fall at home, after which he was unable to remember his name or who my mother was. In her own inimitable style, Mom just happened to mention that he was hospitalized the next time we spoke, as if to prematurely counteract my initial, repressed hunch that this was it for him. He had retired early thanks to numerous afflictions and had since then lived at home with m... read more

Barack Obama does seem to be the least of the remaining evils in the Presidential race--but The Nation should not have endorsed him without challenging him to make a real commitment to end the war in Iraq. Obama's plan to withdraw combat troops from Iraq [within sixteen months] is certainly better than Clinton's open-ended ... read more
