It lies not in our power to love or hate

For will in us is over-rul'd by fate.
When two are stript, long ere the course begin,
We wish that one should lose, the other win;
And one especially do we affect
Of two gold ingots, like in each respect:
The reason no man knows, let it suffice,
What we behold is censur'd by our eyes.
Where both deliberate, the love is slight:
Who ever lov'd, that lov'd not at first sight?

~Christopher Marlowe

Little Green Pearl of Wisdom

The Ghost Town

Out in the high desert near the California-Nevada border is an old gold mining town named Bodie. I visited this town in 1968 with my family, and again with my late wife on our honeymoon in 2009. It's a very strange place, and an interesting destination if you enjoy ghost towns, extreme weather, and getting the creeps. The town had a reputation as a nasty, violent place in its heyday, and rumor has it that those who take home "souvenirs" will be accompanied by an evil presence. Bodie contains some fantastic relics of the Old West and is now a state park, currently preserved in a state of arrested decay--some photographs of it are posted below:
