There has always been much controversy on the working definition of plagiarism. This essay by Mercedes Lackey addresses this issue in such a forthright and compassionate manner that I just had to share it here:

Book-grading terms are always controversial and usually good for a few hundred bickering emails whenever the topic comes up on an email list. Over the years I've come up with a system of my own, which I now humbly offer to the honorable book-buying public as well as my fellow bookselling scum- AS NEW: Literally "new". Since most books, once read or even handled, no longer qualify for the term NEW... read more

about me
I am attracted to movement, whether that be movement in stillness, or stillness in movement. There’s usually some element of movement, that rhythm that creates, a haunting melodic cadence, a harmony of the spheres.
Movement attracts me partly because it’s so unique to the individual, place or thing, partly because the act of movement is constant change. There are a number of complicated processes that go into that art of moving. It may be the movement of horse galloping, racing across a windswept plateau towards (or away from) some distant element. Or the movement of a tree, brushed by the gentle wind dancing through its leaves or whipped about wildly in an angry storm, the delightfully gentle and graceful tentacles of a sea anemone moved by ocean currents, a sea lion diving off the cliffs into the unforgiving cold rocky surf of the pacific north west to play blissfully amongst the kelp beds, or a person wandering across the street towards some unknown destiny. Movement is a moment between one thought or emotion and the subsequent thought or emotion. Movement is a miracle. Movement is change. Think about it, all we really are is a cluster of atoms floating around the universe, a cosmic environment that is billions of light years in size. A very large and old, dark and cold universe, In fact we, and everything in our universe is made of the very same atoms (so my physics instructor’s tell me) that have been floating around the universe since the beginning of time, they just keep changing form. This would seem to indicate that everything, including conscious life, is made of stardust. Living things respond to a symphony of celestial rhythms. Over millions of years we have internalized many of these rhythms. And so there is movement and change even when it is not readily apparent. But there I go, off on another tangent. But you see…that’s what movement does. So, I think what I’m trying to say is that I like to see life and movement in my life and work. I like to follow the current of what’s moving me at that time. I don’t wish to be ensnared into a particular mode of being or thinking. I will go to great lengths to avoid it, if I find myself becoming too attached to a particular idea, or frame of mind…I change it. As the Buddhists say, “the only permanence is impermanence”.
