Adventures in Handrearing a Stoat/Least Weasle Mix
Mon, July 25, 2011 - 11:58 AMso I have been busy with a new critter. The Hubster went out the the other day last week when the tempature hit low with a fierce storm, and came in with something thing screaming out it's lungs and crying something awful. We didn't think he was going to make it, he was starving, wet and shivering with cold. He is a baby, too young to be out in the middle of the field. With some help from friends and a lot of limited research, we figured his mother was carried away by a buzzard or hawk. He is a mix of ermine and a least weasle, but we could be wrong. Feeding it chicken and rabbit, he has grown a bit now, maybe two more weeks and we reintroduce him back to the wild. We found another one dead and one running scared around the hay, I think he may have been the oldest of the litter, but maybe not, it is still all a mystery, but a lot of fun and learning.
We named him Ozzy, he seems to like that.
If anyone has any ideas or thoughts or suggestions, please feel free to add them.

Adorable!
Reminds me of a ferret. Does he have the same scent issues as ferrets?

Too bad you couldn't catch the one running in the hay as well...
I used to love rescuing creatures as a kid. We once rescued a pair of squirrels, which survived & did well in the wild, since I would see them for a couple of years. Unfortunately (at least from my childish perspective)-- they would never come back close enough for me to pet them, once we released them, but my parents assurred me it was best for the squirrels & for me that way.
