I know some Kit drummers (metal drummers in particular) Use tape on the drum head to adjust the tuning it gives a flatter closed sound and shortens the sustain

for any one getting a drum sand blasted have them use Walnut shell or plastic media, it will strip the drum without pitting the Aluminum

sorry for the double post but I wanted to mention. Because of the thickness of Powder coating you will want to be very clear with the person doing to coating on what parts of the drum to leave clean. Another thing should you choose this method g...

If its not a MOP then you could powder coat it that will give you a nice smooth surface. Since the inlay is starting to flake off of mine I am thinking of stripping it and having the whole drum powder coated.

just a little bit to say it went well. We had 3 drummers and that was better than I expected for my first attempt at a drum circle. In retrospect starting the fire on the fire ant mound probably wasn't the best idea it just meant there were pissed off fire ants crawling all over the place.
