My New So-called Riq

   Thu, May 8, 2008 - 11:39 AM
I ordered from Mid-East an 11-inch rosewood riq, with nickeled brass jingles last week. About $75 plus shipping. What I got today was a 14.5 inch rosewood def with nickeled brass jingles. That's a frikken huge thing. It sounds excellent. For that price, I'll keep it, and replace the jingles with thicker ones. I'll get pics up of this beast as soon as I can.

The perils and surprises of buying middle eastern instruments when you live in Tejas are sometimes amazing.

you realized what happened
They saw that you lived in Texas, and figured they'd better make it bigger....

Yea, but how am I to water my horse with it if it has holes in the sides for the jingles? :-)

It's not a riq........
It is actually a muzhar. I have one that is 15" and is made the same. You don't play it like a riq (unless you have big hunken hands). It is rather plain for a muzhar, but it has commanding sound and it is loud. Just what you want for a steday under beat or shake it up for a dancer's entrance. It you try playing that thing throughout, you can give up your gym membership and sell your universal. :)

I knew it wasn't a riq, just saying because a riq was what I ordered. I got it's big brother. :-)

Say, Jeffery, do you know anyone that makes jingles? The jingles that came with the thing are stainless steel cutouts from someone's sheet metal shop-scrap. Hand hammered bronze/brass/copper aren't necessary, but machined hammered one's would be nice and sound a lot better.

At least with the steel one's I can play the "chains" part to Ramzy's "Halloween". HAHAHAHA!

You sure they didn't send you somebody's spinners from their Oldsmobile? :D If you want a nice riq at a good price, check Hamid at Village Bazaar in Milwaukee. He's a great guy with nice drums!

Kevin, if these had spokes, they'd go good on my MazdaSpeed3. LOL! Well, I've looked up that guy you mention on his website. I'm not sure of the best way to contact him. Is it email? Deede has a nice riq made by the guy, I think.

Jami, I played this beast last night. The doum on it is practically subsonic it's so deep. It'll rock the canyons!
