Tribal Con

What a great weekend!
I learned so much, met some great dancers and managed through sheer force of will not to put myself in debt with all of the great vendors. Bought 2 CD's from Jeremiah Soto, "the Solace guy" and a moonstone necklace. If I had this kind of will power with food my ass wouldn't be so big LOL

OK details.
First off the venue was very nice. I liked having the venue at the same place we were staying. It was very very convenient. Plus there were several great restaurants and a Starbucks within walking distance.
The classes were awesome.

First Devadasi signature combos with Rachel Lazarus Soto, a beautiful dancer and very engaging teacher. We learned some beautiful combos and several escape routes from endless EGyptian basics. On Sunday she showed us some tribal veil combos which were very very lovely. Rachel gave me lot to work with and supplement my own dancing and choreographies. Sooz was originally supposed to accompany Rachel and then was unable to make it at the last minute. Sooz is hilarious and a very sweet lady - I was really bummed that she couldn't make it.

Onca and the ladies of Baraka Mundi showed us some tricks with fans and then a short choreography. Lovely, talented and fiery dancers. I love them. I am very bummed that they didn't teach again Sunday. They are pretty local though so one way or another, I will try to get in another class or two with Onca and her troupe.

Onca is funny as hell. There was a discussion panel where you could sit and ask the teachers questions. One person asked Heather of Urban Tribal how she puts her troupe together. All of the teachers were very much in favor of auditioning dancers.
Onca said that auditions were great because then other dancers like ballet dancers would say "Oh wow, they audition. They're like a real dance company. Not some flashy, floozy hos with yak blankets"
She is too damn funny.

Heather and Sara of Urban Tribal were sweet and patient teachers and just overall badass performers. I got goose bumps watching them. I have such a big crush now, seriously. I hope they come out with a DVD soon - I will jump on that as soon as it somes out.
Urban Tribal kicks so much ass.

I was also very pleasantly surprised by the performances. They were all really really good.

Tribal Con is definitely going to be like an annual tradition for me from now on.
