So last year (2006) we were all in the flurry of preparations of making our themecamp for Burning Man, when the head honcho (that would be Timbshoo) announces that this dude, Chris, was going to be camping with us. I was reluctant, as I knew that Timb had met this Chris dude through some kind of job that I had heard complaints about for prior the several months.
Slightly apprehensive, I was like, “Are you sure Timb?”
Timb’s reply, “Well, he’s got a plane.”
Okay, so we’re going to get to ride in a plane, which is always something I wanted to do at BRC. Before we all actually set out for the burn we did get to hang out with Chris a time or two and I had to admit, he was a decent friendly sort, although I thought he was a little distant toward me. (He L8R admitted this was a mutual feeling and that I intimidated him. Can you imagine me intimidating someone???!!!)
Up there on the playa I was surprised to see NO sign of Chris while this other person showed up instead—this Christina chick in her ultra short skirts, stilettos, wild wigs and exaggerated postures and her colorful girly drinks. This Christina chick turns out to be quite the riot and I found myself more than a bit jealous because this little hussy has no problem running up to every hot chick that walks by and getting all fuzzy and cuddly with them like they are long lost sisters. I mean, what is it with these women? WHY CAN’T I do that DAMMIT!!!
Mysteriously enough, Christina disappears before the sunrises and miraculously, Chris shows up in her place, with the rising of the sun—in a sober, focused and determined state—offering rides in his plane. One after another, without complaint. Me, being off and wandering for much of the burn nearly missed out, but Chris, being the sweet considerate soul that he is, goes out of his way to make sure he keeps his last slot open for me and the hot chick he knew I would be bringing along!
Turns out to be the highlight of a burn I know will be difficult to top.
After our return home, I realize that this genuine and generous person is at least as much so every single day of his life. ALWAYS willing to lend a hand or to loan you that specialty tool that you didn’t know existed—always a great friend to the end with a wonderful family to match. Enthusiastic to take you and your friends for a plane ride and just generally be the ultimate mood elevator. This guy is the heart and soul of Burntown.
Except for when Christina is around. Then she takes the crown hands down. All hail the queen, uh, ur . . . yeah, you know what I mean!
