Friday Love
Historic Sweet's Ballroom
Mon, October 16, 2006 - 3:39 PMM is a really nice lady. When she can't do a job or doesn't want to work. She'll give me a hola and see if I want to do it. Last night I got to Bartend the Keisha Cole birthday party @ Sweets. This place is so pretty. It is big and grand. But the Oakland fell is all over the place. Including all the transplants from the Oakland Box that now run the place. I am not a Bartender. Till last night I had never made a drink that I didn't drink some of..... ya kno'. I mean I worked a couple of times but really T saved me time after time as I fumbled through the night. I had SOOOOOO much fun. I made great Cosmos and BAD Incredible HULKS! I met hella nice people. I saw K. Cole do her thing LIVE.
The place:
Originally a dance studio built in 1923, Sweet's Ballroom was managed by Bill Sweet and turned into an impeccable, acoustically pristine ballroom. The ballroom was known as McFadden's in the 30's and as Sands Ballroom in the 70's. Sweet's was known for its big bands and it was The Benny Goodman Orchestra that in 1935, helped to kick off the unofficial beginnings of the 'Swing Era.' The bands played on the raised stage while the crowds moved and swayed on the 8,000 plus-square-foot, elegant, art deco ballroom floor.
