Intelligent Design vs. Babel Fish Theory

I am still a bit flabbergasted that we are actually debating creationism again in the public school system. Is this 1920? Intelligent Design proponents cite the vast complexity of life on Earth as evidence of the hand of God. To me this is highly contradictory. I am reminded of the wisdom of Douglas Adams regarding his Babel Fish.

I paraphrase:

Now it is such a bizarrely improbable coincidence that anything so mind-bogglingly complex could have evolved purely by chance that some thinkers have chosen to see it as a final and clinching proof of the non-existence of God. The argument goes like this:

"I refuse to prove that I exist", says God, "for proof denies faith, and without faith I am nothing."

"But", says Man, "Intelligent Design is a dead giveaway isn't it? Life is far to complex to have evolved by chance. It proves you exist, and so therefore, by your own arguments, you don't. QED."

"Oh dear", says God, "I hadn't thought of that," and promptly vanishes in a puff of logic.

"Oh that was easy" says Man, and for an encore goes on to prove that black is white and gets himself killed on the next zebra crossing.

Oddly enough, as big a proponent of the separation of Church and State as I am, I don't really have a problem with Intelligent Design. At least as I understand it, that is. I mean, I know it's being used by Christians to get creationism back into schools, but the fact is that while it posits a Creator, it doesn't necessarily posit the Christian creator. I'm surprised other spiritual, non-Christian folk haven't latched onto this.

Of course, I don't think it should be taught in Science class.

The Coming of the Great White Hanky
True no specific creator is described but let's get real. The implied creator from proponents is that "Christian God." It is not like there are any serious discussions about aliens implanting life here or that notion that the world sits on the back of a giant tortoise surrounded by a snake. If so we could all be seriously debating whether or not the universe was really just sneezed out of the nose of the Great Green Arkelseizure and when the coming of the Great White Hanky will occur. Im my eyes, each concept is just as fanciful (or credible) as the next one.

I believe
You should check out Dr. Kent Hovind at www.drdino.com, want proof of God/creation--he will blow your mind. I recently saw a dvd of Dr. Hovind's titled The Garden of Eden. Fascinating stuff.

Dinosaurs and Man eh?
I actually checked it out that site with an open mind. I am fascinated by this controversy because it is so completely bewildering to me. When I read the "facts" that dinosaurs actually coexisted with man as recently as 6000 years ago (when they were called dragons) but were killed off and that Noah actually collected all the dinosaurs as well as all the animals, he kinda lost some credibility with me. Sure it appeals to my childhood fantasies about having a pet dragon but I found myself able to put fairy tales behind me as I grew up. Apparently carbon-14 dating is just a theory as well.
