BUZZFLASH! Hot off the Press!

BUZZFLASH GUEST COMMENTARY

Forwarded by Dave Lindorff (based on an idea from one of his readers)

Questions Should You Find Yourself at a microphone at a 'Town Meeting':

1. If Canada's single-payer system is so god-awful, why have repeated Conservative governments at the provincial and national level in Canada never touched it? Canada is a democracy. If Canadians don't like their health care system, why haven't they gotten rid of it in 35 years? Since the system there is run by the separate provinces, many of which are very politically conservative, why has not one province ever tried to get rid of single-payer?

2. Why is rationing by income, as we do it here, better than rationing by need, as they do it in Canada?

3. Wouldn't single-payer mean that companies could no longer threaten working people with the loss of their health insurance? Why is this a bad idea?

So to all of you in Washington, D.C., I ask this simple question. If you were left without the health care coverage that your positions bestow upon you, what would you do?

collapse module

The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there,
Had worn them really about the same

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference!

Robert Frost (1874–1963) was an American poet who incorporated scenes from rural new England life in his poetry to portray complex issues, exploring philosophical and social themes. Frost received four Pulitzer Prizes. He is buried in Vermont. Perhaps this is fitting for a poet who showed such an obvious sensitivity to his surroundings.

Nothing Gold Can Stay

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

--Robert Frost, 1923

UPDATED: Arlington clips added.

Four U.S. presidents (the elder Bush did not attend) and hundreds of the nation's political leaders gathered at the Basilica of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Boston this morning to bid good-bye to Senator Edward Kennedy before his body was flown to Washington to pay a visit to the U.S. Capitol (above) before being buried in Arlington National Cemetery next to his brothers.

A selection of video clips from the funeral and journey to Arlington, can be found at the above link.

I for one am very depressed about this.

Please light a passing candle for Senator Ted Kennedy. Last of the four Kennedy brothers, and next to the last of nine siblings, he lost his battle with brain cancer today. He has been called both 'the lion of the senate' and also 'the last lion of the senate'. He will be missed.

Here are some obituaries that say it better than I can:

Harry Potter and Equus star Daniel Radcliffe has made a major donation to The Trevor Project, the non-profit organization that operates the only nationwide suicide-prevention helpline for LGBTQ youth, the group announced today:

Radcliffe "The 20-year-old actor joined The Trevor Project’s Circle of Hope, a community of major donors which plays an essential role in providing the financial leadership that makes the organization’s lifesaving work possible."

Said Radcliffe: “I am very pleased to begin my support of The Trevor Project, which saves lives every day through its critical work. It's extremely distressing to consider that in 2009 suicide is a top three killer of young people, and it's truly devastating to learn that LGBTQ youth are up to four times more likely to attempt suicide than their heterosexual peers. I deeply hope my support can raise the organization's visibility so even more despondent youth become aware of The Trevor Helpline's highly trained counselors and Trevor’s many other resources. It's vitally important that young people understand they are not alone and, perhaps even more important, that their young lives have real value.”

Said Charles Robbins, executive director and CEO of The Trevor Project: "We’re incredibly grateful to Daniel for his truly inspiring and historic generosity and support. He is setting a meaningful example for millions of young people around the world by embracing diversity and demonstrating that he cares deeply about the well-being of LGBTQ youth."

"Jedi" Claims Religious Discrimination

"JEDI" ACCUSES UK DEPARTMENT STORE OF RELIGIOUS DISCRIMINATION

Remember Barbara Adams, the woman who wore her Star Trek uniform even while serving as a juror on the Whitewater trial? We thought her dedication to sci-fi was so above and beyond the call of duty it would never be matched, but a report in today's London Telegraph proves we should never say never.

According to Daniel Jones, founder of the International Church of Jediism, staff at a Tesco department store in Bangor, North Wales, ejected him over security fears when he refused to remove his hood.

"I told them it was a requirement of my religion, but they just sniggered and ordered me to leave," said Jones, also known by his Jedi name Morda Hehol. "I walked past a Muslim lady in a veil. Surely the same rules should apply to everyone."

The handbook of the U.K. Jedi Church, which was founded last year by Jones—excuse us, Morda Hehol—states that "Jedis must wear a hood up in any public place of a large audience." The religion is practiced by 500,000 around the world.

"It was discrimination," said Jones. "I was really upset. Nobody should be treated like that."

A Tesco spokesman had this response:

"Jedi are very welcome to shop in our stores although we would ask them to remove their hoods. Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda and Luke Skywalker all went hoodless without going to the Dark Side. If Jedi walk around our stores with their hoods on, they'll miss lots of special offers."

Orson Scott Card on the Lord of the Ring

“The closest thing to true communication between two human beings is story-telling, for despite his best efforts at concealment, a writer will inevitably reveal in his story the world he believes he lives in, and the participatory reader will forever after carry around in himself and as himself a memory that was partly controlled by that other human being. Such memories are not neatly sorted into fiction and real life in our minds. I know, of course, that I never stood at the Cracks of Doom and watched Gollum die. But that faith in the distinction between my own actions and the actions of fictional characters is merely another story I tell myself. In fact, my memory of that event is much clearer and more powerful than my memory of my fifth birthday.”
