When I was talking to the author we were discussing the various subgroups that add up to the whole pirate thing. I was mentioning to him how in New Orleans there are a bunch of re-enactors ala ghost tours and also a bunch coming at it from the fauvist/dada-ist angle.(ie, the circus kids). He didn't know what dada was, so I explained it was an absurdist movement that was at its height in prewar berlin. It was like showing a dog a card trick, he didn't get it.
