The Sporadic Nonsequitur
Recipe for Weasel
Wed, May 24, 2006 - 5:24 PMRecipe for Weasel
a la John the Baptist
Take a carcass
any carcass
in any state of decay
marinate it in brackish water
for a year and a day
or to taste
Rest easy
all the bad flavors
ought to be well hidden
when fully prepared
Pour the assembled mixture
onto a reviewing stand
Into the mess now
badges flick
until at least half a dozen
stick
Take a hundredweight of lies
careful to leave be
the people's eyes
press the lies 'til they open
and only the largest
remain unbroken
Add 3 tbl sps of cheap sentiment
a tsp and a half of minced creed
sprinkle liberally with greed
and more than a t'ch
of son of a bitch
Infuse the mixture
with essence
of confidence trickster
Slather generously with blood
Asian or Hispanic is best
but in a pinch
don't be too particular
as no amount of blood
is apt to ruin the recipe
Remember
the importance
of presentation
propped on a platter
your creation
will take on
the visage of a saint
surveying the heavens
Set the press on half baked
for as long as it takes
serve up to the people
and wait for raves

yep
Hi g-
This poem resonates just as strongly now as it did back in the days of Reagonomics and Iran-Contra... just as V burns the psyche of America even though it appears to be about the UK. I especially like this part towards the end: ------ Add 3 tbl sps of cheap sentiment a tsp and a half of minced creed sprinkle liberally with greed and more than a t'ch of son of a... Infuse the mixture with essence of confidence trickster Slather generously with blood Asian or Hispanic is best but in a pinch don't be too particular as no amount of blood is apt to ruin the recipe Remember the importance of presentation propped on a platter your creation will take on the visage of a saint surveying the heavens ------------ Ouch! Pretty scathing, I'd say, and deservedly so. The psyche needs a good burn now and then. in a kind of alchemical process involving the felicitous and balanced sequence or juxtaposition of the four primal elements: earth, air, fire, and water. There's a great book about Jung and Alchemy that elucidates so much in this area. Here's a link to V and a quote: www.givemeliberty.org/RTP2/UP...1-18.htm "People should not fear their governments; governments should fear the people." -- Codename "V" Also, have you seen this quote from George Washington? Take a gander. "As Mankind becomes more liberal, they will be more apt to allow that all those who conduct themselves as worthy members of the community are equally entitled to the protections of civil government. I hope ever to see America among the foremost nations of justice and liberality." That quote from George Washington really made me think. I have this idea that humans somehow devolve civically and socially into fascism.. and if given enough time, generally pull out of it to become more socialist and liberal. That most definitely has happened in much of Europe. That it's now happening in the USA seems a bit too late to be fortunate in a sense because the damage we're doing could very possibly be irreversible, even with a necessary and inevitable move to the left. The wave of conspicuous consumption is devouring the world both literally, figuratively, and culturally.. and it aint nuthin nice. The poor earth cannot be raped, despoiled, mutilated, polluted, and overheated to such a point that people can continue on this mindless quest for stuff. Holidays aren't helping either, of course. I keep wondering if this over-consumption in such a lemminglike frenzy is a sign of impending extinction. You know: enjoy, spend, consume like an epicure who can't look at despair or death. We'll see. Take care, Sue > --George Washington |

I hadn't realized I'd left out a word. I copied it from a ghmb post I made where the word bitch probably wouldn't have been acceptable to the mods. I do remember that George Washington quote, so much for those who like to claim the founding fathers would be in agreement with the religious right. Thanks for your comments. If I'm not mistaken that V quote comes from some past philosopher or social critic, can't recall offhand who. It sounds like something Thomas Paine might have written, or perhaps Thoreau even. I'm not certain.

source of V quote?
I googled a bit. At first I thought the quote came from Shakespeare, but it didn't.
It doesn't appear to have come from Paine either, nor Thoreau. Maybe Alan Moore just made it up out of whole cloth. It's possible, eh? Sue |
