The Virgo woman in a relationship
(from astro.com)
If you're looking for the perfect secretary/housekeeper, you should probably go and find yourself some other sign. The main gift of the Virgo woman is her intelligence, not her tidiness. If you find the compulsive housebound type of Virgo who dusts three times a day, then you're courting trouble, because you've got yourself a Virgo who uses rituals to hide from some pretty explosive emotions.
There are plenty of Virgo women about who take an interest in their homes and like a beautiful, orderly environment. But what really matters to her is good taste, subtlety and understanding, and she has a keen wit about people and life. There are catches, of course. The Virgo woman can be terrifyingly self-contained, and it's often difficult for her to be "married" in the deeper sense of the word. There's a quality about the Virgo woman which is psychologically untouchable, and if you try to invade that private, secret self you're likely to get the same reaction as if you tried physical assault.
Virgo women aren't the clinging, needy type. More often they're Amazons who show a frightening degree of capability and efficiency, either on a physical level or a mental one - and sometimes on both. Bad luck if you want to be the Sun around whom a happily reflecting Moon-partner orbits.
The Virgo woman has her own ideas and opinions, and a profound need to communicate them. Some Virgo women talk so much that it can make you cover your ears and begin screaming just to make the sound stop. It may not be the famous Virgo criticism, either. It may be all about the latest book she's read, or the problem she had to solve in her programming work, or the person she's lately been taking apart and analysing psychologically.
If you're after the beautiful, silent type, forget it. Virgo women also have an infuriating propensity to question your knowledge. Tell her something and she'll ask for the source, complete with footnotes. Virgos don't really believe anyone else until the definitive reference work becomes available. It's hard to be more knowledgeable than a Virgo, because they soak up knowledge like a sponge soaks up water. This can do wonders for your intellectual scope and horrors for your ego.
Some Virgo women are Earth-mothers, and the sign's sensitivity expresses itself through a love of nature and a healing and skilful touch with all crafts. And that need to be useful attracts many Virgos into the helping professions, from nursing to dietetics to psychology and psychiatry to alternative healing of all kinds.
Virgo's real warmth and sparkle take time to emerge from behind the apparent coolness and detachment. It's hard for the Virgo woman to be spontaneous. Often she can only show love by doing practical things for her loved ones. Intense emotions are frightening, and can only be expressed in an atmosphere of trust. Break that trust and you'll get the sarcastic, cutting edge of the Virgo tongue, which can be lethal because she's been observing with minute care all the weaknesses that you were certain no one noticed. Virgo women have a disconcerting habit of spotting the carefully hidden frayed cuff and the nervous twitch you thought you were controlling. They observe minutiae because the vast spectrum of life is best reflected in the small. Virgos take pride in their skills and want respect for their accomplishments.
This woman radiates a mysterious aloofness which may sound like, "Keep Out!" but really means, "Welcome, but respect my separateness." The Virgo woman makes an art of being her own person. She won't adore you blindly. More likely she'll love you for your imperfections, because she's a compassionate realist and likes feeling useful and needed. This can terrify you into running very quickly in the opposite direction (if your vanity matters that much to you). Or it can be a wonderfully cooling and inspiring experience to actually be your ordinary human self.
6-11 Virgo/Aquarius Moon
The combination of your Virgo Sun and Aquarius Moon produces one who, in part, is very earth bound and practical, while another part is somewhere above the horizon searching for truth, understanding, and knowledge. You strive to be aloof from the mundane elements of everyday life, as this is not a combination featuring much human emotion and passion. Periodic moods of emotionalism and romanticism notwithstanding, you're inclined to be cool and self-sufficient at heart. You can be insensitive in the way you handle people. You tell them what you think rather than what they want to hear, expecting them to be big enough to handle it; supreme objectivity, it might be called. You are a sympathetic person, but it's more because of your totally objective way of looking at things, rather than just a bleeding heart. You can use sympathy and understanding without letting your judgment get too clouded with emotion. In romance, the intellectual connection and perhaps romantic idealism, is more important to you than the emotional and physical side of love. You can become absorbed and occupied with an idea or a plan, a true mental explorer, dreaming, scheming and trying to satisfy an endless curiosity. You are a somewhat suspicious person, critical and judicial. Your mind may often be unconventional, but you are usually guided by a sound analytical and intuitive sense.
LIBRA
Libra rising produces a personality that is naturally diplomatic and sociable. Graciousness, compatibility, and sociability are your obvious personality traits. This is the sign of the scales of balance and justice. The primary quality associated with Libra is a strong sense of fair play. You can see both sides of nearly any issue, and there is always a demand in your nature that justice be served. Perhaps because of this latter trait, an amazing number of the world's most famous political leaders have had Libra on the rise.
With Libra on the rise, you are good at debate, but you are not likely to be too argumentative. You strive to win your points in ways that are shrewd and politically careful. Your fixed nature is well hidden by your cooperative demeanor.
You don't function well in discordant environments as there is an overwhelming need in your nature for harmony. Neatness and order must be maintained if you are to remain comfortable in any situation. You may constantly find yourself readjusting to align yourself to the forces around you to get an inner sense of balance. You have such an even disposition, and so much charm, that you can usually please nearly everyone. You usually try to do just that. You are one who reacts to others, and you are better suited to making your way by being agreeable and taking what comes your way almost naturally.
On the negative side of Libra rising is the tendency to maintain the status quo. You want to avoid the disruption of change and avoid making waves. You may give in sometimes to the temptations of indolence. You may have a natural tendency to say what you think will please others, rather than what you really feel. The object being to hide your true feelings for the sake of winning approval and maintaining order and harmony.
Because of your inborn peace-loving and diplomatic tendencies, you are sometimes prone to fail in the primary job of taking care of number one. You are not very good at aggressively advancing yourself. You need to concentrate on learning how to stick up for yourself and realize your identity.
Female - Libra Rising
This woman is something of an enigma. She comes across helpless and in need of rescue one moment, and in the next she is like a drill sergeant. Libra rising is seductive, and like her male counterpart, always in love. Always. She isn't fooled as easily as the male, however. She can see past the perfect pecs into the mind, and she will turn away a man that lacks intelligence.
She can be manipulative in her own way--always making herself available to her partner, always willing to follow his lead. Why? Because she's in love with him, and she believes that love is sacrificial and worth getting a little dirty on a camping or fishing trip. She needs romance and all of its trappings. She will let her partner storm about and boss her around, but she won't really listen. She'll let it go in one ear and out the other.
If it goes on for too long, she will be happy to look elsewhere for the love she needs. Once in a committed relationship, however, she will often switch roles and become the leader. She is very intelligent and can be quite dominating, although never in a harsh or rude manner. Harmony is just as important to her as it is to the Libra rising male. Sexually, she needs plenty of attention and romance, and if she gets it, she will enjoy being the initiator in many nightlong festivities. She, like the Libra male, is very sensitive and giving sexually.
Queen of Heaven is the ancient Virgo archetype. Isis, Nut, Ceres, Demeter, Corn Mother, Potato Mother are examples of names for her. In modern times the Virgin Mary, Queen of Heaven, represents the purity, quiet power, nurturing qualities, caring, and bridging or intercession abilities of Virgo.
According to River and Gillespie, in Knot of Time,
"We find in Virgo, more than in any other sign, reflections of the belief about the Great Goddess held most dear by her worshippers. The Goddess was seen as both the fertile Earth mother and the sanctified virgin, the Queen of Heaven and the woman who lives in obscurity; she was in every woman. Virgo’s oldest associations were with fruitfulness and fertility.
"Virgo represents the harvest (the mother Demeter) as well as the planted seed (the daughter Persephone). In the Americas we hear of the Mother of Maize and the Blue Cornmaiden, while in Europe people made corn dollies at harvest time to contain the blessing of the Cornmaiden/mother throughout the year.
"The apparently paradoxical combination of both sexuality and virginity in the Cornmaiden and mother had no contradictions for Goddess-worshipping peoples. Sexuality was sacred and the word ‘virgin’ did not imply celibacy or inexperience as it does now. A virgin was a woman who did not belong to any man, who was her own mistress, aware of her powers and her value. She formed relationships and made love when she chose it, but never gave up her right to self-determination."
Temple priestesses were called vestal virgins, showing again Virgo’s dedication, as well as its ability to intercede with divinity on behalf of humankind and life on earth. This term also shows the close connection between asteroid Vesta and Virgo. Vesta was Goddess of the Hearth, and in our charts she shows where we dedicate and focus ourselves, where we find our personal inner security.
Virgo is the earth sign that makes the connection between the material world and the heavenly world. Virgo’s tools are a super-sensitivity to all of life, an extraordinary mind, and an intense desire to serve.
Virgo is a very grounded sign—in touch with the earth, its plants and animals, its winds and waters, and its natural rhythms. In Virgo there is appreciation of life’s simple pleasures, a recognition and enjoyment of every tiny part which contributes to the fabric of life.
Virgo is often a gardener or a farmer or an environmentalist, like Demeter, who brought the fullness of harvest to her people. Virgo understands the complex web of nature and is eager to work to maintain its integrity and its usefulness.
In the same way Virgo understands the human body and is a natural healer. Virgo is especially suited to alternative therapies, for its way of healing is to cooperate with nature, not fight it. Virgo also understands very well that mind affects body.
Virgo’s analytical abilities are as acute as its sensitivities. Virgo wants to make sense out of the world, and will observe, study, research, compare, and record. Virgo likes paper, where ideas are presented in tangible form. In fact, an ancient picture of the Goddess shows her with a papyrus headdress. Virgo is often a fine writer, or poet, or critic.
Dedication is Virgo’s path—dedication to improvement, to healing, to serving, to the refining process of purifying his/her own creative path. Virgo tries to live intentionally—to be conscious of its actions and to know that they serve a higher purpose.
Virgo is associated with health, good diet, exercise, and taking care of oneself. Virgo is a realist, willing to recognize and work with what exists. This, combined with fine problem-solving ability and desire for improvement, means that a situation is never hopeless for Virgo. Analysis will always turn up workable options for improving things.
Virgoans need to work, they need to dedicate themselves, and they need to express their convictions about life and growth. Virgoan Margaret Sanger, for example, helped women control their bodies through family planning. Another Virgoan, Margo St. James, founded COYOTE, the self-help group which campaigns for the rights of prostitutes.
More often, though, Virgo is found working behind the scenes. It is service, not power, which attracts, and Virgo is willing to devote all of its energies to a worthwhile cause.
The Virgo addiction to perfection can be a problem at times. Virgo needs to relax sometimes, to let things go, to look at the whole picture, and to criticize problems, not people. This is especially true with regard to self, for Virgo can be very self-critical.
Competency and skill are important to Virgo, and during Virgo time our talents and abilities are a major focal point. As we gain new understanding, do we find new ways to express it in our lives?
Harmonizing the spiritual and mundane elements of life is also important during Virgo time. Peace is Every Step, the title of a fine book by Thich Nhat Hanh, is a very Virgonian concept.
Virgo is a time for introspection, contemplation, and review of who we are, where we are heading, what we have achieved, and what we can do to improve the effectiveness of our efforts.
During Virgo time it is easier to notice what is out of alignment in our lives, and what adjustments we need to make to realign with our ideals and our inner nature. We can diagnose and heal our own problems. We can update our attitudes and align them with our values.
The aspect of love which nurtures growth is one of the great archetypal forces of Virgo. A challenge of Virgo time is to recognize the great importance of growth in our lives, especially growth toward divine ideals. Says my Saturn-in-Virgo friend, "My path has the value of healing and nurturing life, and I will always be committed to that."
Leichtman and Japiske, in Forces of the Zodiac, say,
"because the forces of Virgo lead from the mundane to the sublime, one of the best ways to tune into them is by paying attention to the symbolic meaning of ordinary events. The tangible signs of the events of life will be our surest guide to discovering and tapping the forces of this time…..The work which is done in Virgo will reappear as a powerful basis for self-expression and service next year in Aquarius, and will in fact sow the seeds for the new direction and focus which will emerge in Aries. It is therefore of great importance to work intelligently with the forces of this time."
The keys for tapping into the deeper resources of Virgo are very simple—self-acceptance, and paying attention to ordinary daily life.
The major pitfall of Virgo is worry. Both self-acceptance and attention to life’s daily details will counteract worry.
