							&lt;div&gt;So, back in the day (since very few people could swim... including most sailors), often the only survivors of a shipwreck would be the pigs and chickens kept on board for meat/eggs, since they would float to shore in their wooden cages. From this, the legend arose that pigs and chickens could not drown. Sailors began getting them tattooed on their feet as a protection again drowning... they believed that it made them able to walk on water.
