Who I am and What I Do

Goh Nakamura cut his teeth on the Boston Music scene providing “stunt guitar” work for various local bands.

After a stint at the Berklee College of Music where he sharpened his ears, he came back to the west coast to write his own songs. He likes to think of himself as a combination of John Lennon, John Cusack and John Coltrane. However unholy this trinity is, it seems to work (at least in his head).

For the last 3 years, he’s been playing his original songs as well as an eclectic spectrum of covers at assorted venues throughout the SF Bay Area.

Goh Nakamura’s debut album, “Daylight Savings”, was recently named one of the Top Ten Local Albums of 2004 by the San Jose Metro.

“Armed with an acoustic guitar and an active imagination, Goh Nakamura strums to the beat of a processed drum machine, singing the minimum wage, dial-up connection blues.
Like Neil Finn gone broke or a male version of Mary Lou Lord, Nakamura could be a patron saint for lonely code warriors with good record collections.
Geekdom doesn’t get any more pronounced than on “N.P.”, a wistful stalker anthem about a girl in a Star Wars trilogy.” - Todd Inoue (Hyphen Magazine)

“This is the debut release for Bay Area troubadour Goh Nakamura. He draws from the no frills, sensitive singer/songwriter inkwell…' ultra heartfelt and barebones, much like that of Elliott Smith’s early albums. The ache is palpable in each of the eleven songs on Daylight Savings. Impressive. ” from Aquarius Records

“Listening to Goh Nakamura is like falling in love for the first time. It’s bemusing, sweet, and a little clumsy in moments, but pricelessly charming in spite of itself. You... read more

Unfortunately, my cd player in my car stopped working- but the last time it was working, this is what I had in it: The Lucksmiths (Warmer Corners), Kurt Rosenwinkel (The Next Step), Paul Motian/Joe Lovano/Bill Frisell (I Have The Room Above Her) and an amazing Elvis Costello Bootleg of just him and Steve Nieve.

Now that I have to listen to cassettes, I am listening to a tape my cousin gave me in 1987 (Jeff Beck's Blow By Blow) and a mix tape of Ron Sexsmith, Aimee Mann, Jeff Buckley and Ru... read more

Two months ago, Samantha wrote about Goh Nakamura’s newest video, “Embarcadero Blues.” Turns out that wasn’t the final cut - the following video is the finished work. And on top of that, the video was linked off of YouTube’s front page, giving the video over a QUARTER MILLION views and giving Goh official status as an internet celebrity. As someone who’s met Goh, I can honestly say that I couldn’t be any happier for the guy. We also blogged about voting for Kayla, the Asian Baby for the YoB

I came across this while surfing tonight, a sweet, almost Beatles-esque song about working in the service industry on the Embarcadero in San Francisco (The Financial District). Very bitter sweet song, that really reminds me of a lot of things going in my life right now (I also work in the Embaradero, in a cube). I had never heard of Goh Nakamura prior to this video, but I’ll be checking him out now.
