about me
*i am a dull and simple lad, cannot tell water from champagne.
*came back only yesterday, feeling further away
*i have suffered from the cruel, disciplinary education of
panic disorder since 7
february 2002. during an early scene in fellini's eight and
a half, while marcello mostriani petitioned a catholic
cardinal for some cinematic thing or another, i fell through
a hole in myself that i had never before noticed.
*childhood memories haunt me
*i am standing on a plateau, alone. just in front of me
is a nineteenth century farmhouse, much like my
grandparents' in western iowa. wheat fields, snow-capped
mountains in the distance, a deep, languid angle of the
sun characteristic of late autumnal afternoons. suddenly,
a sinister...darkness begins to descend upon the house
from above, gathering in the sky, menacingly. and yet i
am unafraid, merely inquisitive. the darkness encases the
house, endowing it with an unexpected vibrance. it slowly
becomes a hive of activity. only when i turn around to
see the cameras flashing and reporters from national news
magazines buzzing about do i begin to lose control.
*i was born on the day that mark bolan died.
*states of transition and variations on a theme fascinate
me.
*i study the relationship among islam, secularism, class,
and non-governmental organizations (vakiflar) in contemporary turkey.
*nicin kimse beni koruyamiyor? lutfen, beni koru...nasil cevabi agracagimi hic bilmiyorum.
*i would go out tonight, but i haven't got a stitch to wear.
*i've just moved to ortakoy, istanbul, where i wake late and take my waking slow, before shuffling down to the sahil for tea and a bosphorus sunset....which, all things considered, is a kind life.

The Lessons and Loss of Hrant Dink; On Violence, Nationalism, and Hesitant Optimism (blog entry) 20 - 27 January 2007, Istanbul

The body was covered by a white tarpaulin, but from my vantage it was more effectively shrouded by the hordes of television crews and rubber-neckers who had congregated on Halaskargazi Caddesi in the fading light ... read more

Dear all,

A week and a half ago in Uskudar, on Istanbul’s Asian side, and the Risale-i Nur lesson has just ended. The last call to prayer for the day has yet to echo forth from the minarets of the three or four ornate... read more

All,

Kizilay, downtown Ankara, is darker at night than Istanbul ever is: In spite of the measured electric glow of the neon jungle, the shadows of ic Anadolu, inner Anatolia, extend to the very nucleus of Mustafa Kemal’s metrop... read more

a carnival on istiklal; impressions and miniatures; mischievous anonymity (blog entry) 8 February 2006, Istanbul, Ortakoy

Dear all,

The carnival of Istiklal Caddesi on a Friday night, even at the nadir of a rather cold winter, has an inimitable mystique: Istanbul’s nouveau bourgeoisie arm in arm, the hanimefendiler wrapped in... read more

My Blog

20 - 27 January 2007, Istanbul

The body was covered by a white tarpaulin, but from my vantage it was more effectively shrouded by the hordes of television crews and rubber-neckers who had congregated on Halaskargazi Caddesi in the fading light of the winter afternoon. I was thankful for this—I had already registered the blunt guilt of a spectator to a bizarre tragedy, even though I had unintentionally chanced upon the scene of Hrant Dink’s assassination while walking home from Cemal Bey’s... read more

7 October 2006, Istanbul

As usual, Sunday afternoon finds me at the gypsy flea market down the hill in Dolapdere, sifting through a riveting collection of Istanbul’s flotsam and jetsam, rescued from oblivion by the romes. I am addicted to this market, both to the fragments of previous passions and pastimes that nurture my bottom-feeding, inquisitive habits of acquisition, and, more importantly, to the warmth of the thirdhand merchants themselves. The circuit from one end of the narrow al... read more

Dear all,

A week and a half ago in Uskudar, on Istanbul’s Asian side, and the Risale-i Nur lesson has just ended. The last call to prayer for the day has yet to echo forth from the minarets of the three or four ornate mosques that line the square just off of the Bosporus, each one a testament to Ottoman imperial egoism, the endowment of some otherwise forgotten Valide Sultan or Grand Vezir. The room in which we gather each Saturday night for our class is far mor... read more

All,

Kizilay, downtown Ankara, is darker at night than Istanbul ever is: In spite of the measured electric glow of the neon jungle, the shadows of ic Anadolu, inner Anatolia, extend to the very nucleus of Mustafa Kemal’s metropolitan utopia. And the shadows on the faces of the petty police officers, the kokorec line cooks, and the hawkers of all products black to lightest grey (but never entirely white) are deeper and darker still. The fervent, ‘global’ optimism that ani... read more

Dear all,

The carnival of Istiklal Caddesi on a Friday night, even at the nadir of a rather cold winter, has an inimitable mystique: Istanbul’s nouveau bourgeoisie arm in arm, the hanimefendiler wrapped in polar fox fur, the beyefendiler pinned together with mother of pearl tie-clips; the transvestite hookers balanced haphazardly on stiletto heels thinner than their knock-off Virginia Slims; the rowdy tiki-girl slappers, the owl-eyed hawkers, the hiss... read more
