Yes, this is right side up

Shot at the 2007 Chrystanthemum show, Lincoln Park Conservatory, Chicago. What is behind the greenery is a trellis, not the ground. Note the girders of the greenhouse appearing faintly in the background, giving us the proper orientation.

Ornamental Chiles

More from the 2007 Chrysanthemum show, Lincoln Park Fieldhouse, Chicago. I don't know which type of chile this is, or even if it is used for food.

Who I'm not

I do not work for and am not affiliated with the Green Tortoise in any way except for one. I'm one of their past customers, having ridden with them to Burning Man. I wrote about the experience, which wasn't altogether satisfactory, and then discovered, much to my amazement, that this account was what I was best known for, online. Very strange, but people made just that much of a fuss about a travel journal and consumer report.

This page will be about consumer and disabled advocacy, celiac disease and gluten free cooking and dining, travel to some of the places that the Green Tortoise visits (and others) on a low budget when one can't drive, and other subjects that have come up in the course of my Green Tortoise experience, both during the trip and after. There might be some photography.

Let's start with a video I found on Youtube, in which a few physicians explain what Celiac Disease is and how one deals with it.

That Stupid Green Tortoise Blog

If you were looking for the Green Tortoise and Other Travesties, which the bewildered visitors to this formerly unoccupied location often were (I'm told), it's over here, at

http://josephdunphy.blogspot.com/

If you were looking for Bad Times on the Green Tortoise - why were you looking for it on Blogger? It doesn't matter, you can find that account here, on my Southwestern themed homepage.

But if you did mean to be here, then perhaps I ought to tell you what this blog is: it's a team blog in search of a team that might or might not arrive, but I'm hoping that it will. There's a gross disconnect between the experience of the Green Tortoise as I've seen it portrayed online and as I experienced it on the ground, and when I keep running into slick, glossy layouts on supposedly amateur created fansites, and "spontaneously written" reviews that are stylistically indistinguisable from professionally written ad copy implausibly often, I'm not surprised at the discrepancy between image and reality. While I certainly had a rougher time on that trip a few years back than did most of those I was travelling with, the fact of the matter was that I got to hear about a lot of unhappiness from a lot of the other campers. I look at the way in which others have tried to bury my own account of my own experiences, and I wonder how many other people just gave up on trying to be heard.

I decided that I'd like to do something about that, and now have the pagerank to give that a try. This blog is a place where you can maybe (subject to my approval) come to tell your story of Green Tortoise experiences that weren't all sweetness and butterflies, the kind of stories the Reptile isn't going to agree to let you post on their site. It's a place for telling the other side of the story, as experienced by those of us who made the mistake of travelling with the Green Tortoise without taking a few hits of acid, first. If you'd like to be on the team, drop by my ring management list and introduce yourself, telling me a little about your story and indicating your desire to work on this blog. Please keep in mind that I'm trying to keep this place down to a low PG rating: no profanity and no adult material, and definitely no bigotry or hatemongering. Pretend that you're writing a travel report for a newspaper and ask yourself what would or would not be appropriate, and let that be your guide.

If there is enough interest in this blog, eventually I'll put it on the Dissatisfied Customers of the Green Tortoise Ring. If not, I'll find some other good use for it. Some of my family members collect reptiles; maybe it'll be about that. I don't know. We'll see.

Not mine, but if you haven't been to Burning Man, this will give you a little of the spirit of the event.

Re: First thing ... (in Green Tortoise Bookmarks and Resources) .

Oh, by the way - the Google video stalled after a few minutes, when I watched it, so be ready for that. No, your computer isn't broken - or maybe it is, and mine is broken in the same way?

The Internet can be such fun. :)

First thing ... (in Green Tortoise Bookmarks and Resources) .

I'll be looking for pages and videos that don't look like ad copy, and no, that doesn't mean that I'm specifically looking for bad reviews, but when one clicks on this

Recipes will come first (in Green Tortoise Rider / My Journal) .

Later, I hope to wander out to some of the places one might go with the Tortoise, but for now, I think I'll focus on the gluten-free cooking, maybe done in something akin to the California style cooking that we saw on the Tortoise. While it w... read more

Holding it Down / My Page on Del.icio.us

Apparently, the homepage of the author of the page previously bookmarked, offered just in case one wonders who Timothy McGettigan was, on reading that piece.

Timothy McGettigan of the Colorado State University at Pueblo writes about his travels with the Green Tortoise, and the change in viewpoint that he experienced during his trip.

Another gluten-free food blog, this with more of a focus on dining in Washington State - which doesn't appear to be happening on a budget. But there are recipes and the photography is impressive.

Eclectic, generally California style cuisine without wheat? This looks interesting - at the very least, the pictures looked good.
