Yellin' Into The Void??

Dr. A on Science Fiction (in A S I M O V) Way back in HS there was a class on Science Fiction, and one of the things we covered were Dr. Asimov's "rules" for what good SF should be. One of them was SF should have a reasonable scientific basis.

Anyone else remember these or can help me... read more

Alice (in science fiction) Starts tomorrow. I'll watch it, but Tim Burton's take looks like it will be better. SciFi's (er...SyFy's) Re-imagining of classic stories, Like Oz, hasn't really worked in the past. It can't be worse than Tin Man.

SGU-Pilot Question (in Stargate Command) At the end of the pilot two parter a shuttle flew off...has that been explained? Was it the shuttle with the dead Senator or something more ominous?

Thanks,
Alex

Re: remember the first gay TV show (in Homostory 101) I remember a local Detroit bar showing this and Dynasty on weekdays (Wed?) to attract business.

Anyone watch TV? (in science fiction) What's worth watching these days? It's hard to get a space opera fix outside of the Stargate franchise or (to repeat myself) the rebooted ABC series.

about me
This profile, like me, is a work in process. For now we look like this:

I am a spiritual person. Everyone searches for meaning, and some people find it. I remain on the hunt. The christian tradition speaks to me and is where I'm starting my journey but growing up Unitarian Universalist taught me that no religion has the lock on ultimate truth. (The approach is from liberal religious tradition, not a literalist or fundamentalist view.)

I'm in a long term relationship (14 years as of Feb 09) with a talented and good man.

I'm an intellectual person. Neither a PhD nor philosopher, but I try to be thoughtful and deliberate. Reading (mostly fiction) is my favorite way to spend time.

I like movies that are about redemption of the heart and finding one's self. Big Eden, Under the Tuscan Sun, and The Shipping News are some in this category.

OCC-Orchard Ridge is starting to be a little scary.  Just rec'd e-mail alert of a criminal attack at the campus, the 2nd since I officially returned to school over the summer.  Part of the problem is that the campus is large and there are long walks from parking to class buildings with multi-level outdoor patios and corridors.  I'm going to have one class there next semester & the Paralegal program is based there.

I was at the local BGLT Community Center today doing homework (English Inquiry Paper on School Prayer) and one of the kids plunked out a few notes of Windmills of Your Mind on the piano. So I had to go out and find it to get it out of my own little mind. Here is Alyson Moyet's rendition, with stirngs and a glass harmonica! Hope you like it as much as I did:

This popped up on another blog and was interesting and informative. It's in the comments section lower middle part of the webpage (I used "find" Randomnoise's entry)

I AM AN AMERICAN CONSERVATIVE

this morning I was awoken by my alarm clock powered by electricity generated by the public power monopoly regulated by the US department of energy.

I then took a shower in the clean water provided by the municipal water utility.

After that, I turned on the TV to one of the FCC regulated channels to see what the national weather service of the national oceanographic and atmospheric administration determined the weather was going to be like using satellites designed, built, and launched by the national aeronautics and space administration. I watched this while eating my breakfast of US department of agriculture inspected food and taking the drugs which have been determined as safe by the food and drug administration.

At the appropriate time as regulated by the US congress and kept accurate by the national institute of standards and technology and the US naval observatory, I get into my national highway traffic safety administration approved automobile and set out to work on the roads build by the local, state, and federal departments of transportation, possibly stopping to purchase additional fuel of a quality level determined by the environmental protection agency, using legal tender issed by the federal reserve bank. On the way out the door I deposit any mail I have to be sent out via the US postal service and drop the kids off at the public school.

After spending another day not being maimed or killed at work thanks to the workplace regulations imposed by the department of labor and the occupational safety and health administration, enjoying another two meals which again do not kill me because of the USDA, I drive my NHTSA car back home on the DOT roads, to ny house which has not burned down in my absence because of the state and local building codes and fire marshal's inspection, and which has not been plundered of all it's valuables thanks to the local police department.

I then log on to the internet which was developed by the defense advanced research projects administration and post on freerepublic.com and fox news forums about how SOCIALISM in medicine is BAD because the government can't do anything right

omphaloskepsis: the study of one's navel

Read a critique of design on Star Trek (and a companion piece about Star Wars) and the image that will stay with me forever is talking about the Borg: The Tin Man on Goth Night at the local leather bar.

In A Field Theory of Beauty, an essay in Grace (Eventually) about inner / outer beauty Anne Lamott noted:
* No matter how much of our time is spent in pursuit of physical beauty, even to great success, the Mirror on the Wall will always say, “Snow White lives,” and this is in fact a lie – Snow White is a fairy tale.
* Joy is the best make up. Joy and good lighting. / If you ask me, a little lipstick is a close runner up.

(Truthfully, I would be happy to just re-print the whole ess... read more

Cut Sleeve Boys is about two Chinese gay men in London after the unexpected death of their friend (heart attack while getting a BJ in a public restroom). Ash is looking for true and lasting love, Mel is a stereotypical gay “boi,” though he’s clearly no longer a boy. Both of them are staving off aging, but in different degrees and ways.

Mel has a man leave his parents in Murtha and come to be with him in London. Unfortunately it seems that Mel has never learned to be emotionally open to ... read more

A few weeks ago there were three references to the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr in three days. First I liestened to an MP3 of Speaking of Faith (Obama’s Theologian) from public radio; Second was in Rev. Corrado’s sermon; Third was in Jimmy Carter’s book OUR ENDAGERED VALUES: America’s Moral Crisis. I took that as inspiration, or a sign, and finally went out to find out more about this theologian.

Finally, yesterday I finished reading Reinhold Niebuhr: Prophet From America, © 1945, which tal... read more
