<div>A friend of a friend is seeking a quiet, secluded place to meditate upon her life for a few months. She was thinking about something like a convent but she's not religious. I personally think a Buddhist temple would be much better.

She's located near Cologne, Germany. She said it doesn't have to be in Cologne. So, something in Germany, Belgium or Netherlands.

Please let me know. It's really important to her and the friend I'm helping to help her.</div>

My company is hiring. You want to work there.

<div>I work for a company called EVault. We're in the data backup solutions industry. We are hiring at least two people for the position of Vault Manager. You need to know your way around Windows 2003 Server but you don't have to be a Window guru. You need to the admin basics: How to map a persistent network drive. How to check the event viewer. How to check if a port is open on another server. How to use tracert, ping, etc. There will be a skills test but it's not hard, IMHO. If you know your stuff, you'll fly through it. A little knowledge of SQL Server, Exchange would be nice but not required. A little knowledge of Unix, Linux or Novel would be a plus but, again, not required. If you have some web dev experience, especially PHP, we would LOOOVE that too.

You need to be willing to learn an application fast, but the application isn't that complicated. The application sits on a Windows 2003 platform. It takes data sent from backup agents that are installed on servers, which gather and send backup data over the internet, "over the wire," and stores it. This kind of server setup is called a data Vault. You manage about 15 private data Vaults, work with customers, work with the data, etc. Once you get the hang of it, it's not a difficult job.

You need to be very good at customer communications, verbal and written. 40% of the job is technical. 40% of the job is customer relations and the other 20% is assorted projects. That's a rough estimate. You accounts are going to be mid-side to large companies. Your data Vaults will be 1-9TB in size.

If we like you, you'll be hired quickly. We want two hires by the end of this month. We are picky as we are building a core team but if you are a fit, we will move on you. The base pay is decent. You'll be on a team of very intelligent people who work hard but also like to have a lot of fun. Everyone has their quirks but nobody sucks.

If you're not technical and more into project management, we're also hiring at least one project manager.

The Vault manager jobs are based out of Emeryville, CA. We are interested in talking to people who are not in the area. If we like you, we can work something out.

The company is not fly-by-night. We just got bought by Seagate as a fully owned but independent subsidiary of a new division called Seagate Data Services or something like that. The only thing that has changed for me since the Seagate purchase is our logo got a facelift, I'm going to be getting better benefits and, if I asked, I can probably get wicked deals on hard drives.

www.evault.com - Check us out. Tell your friends. Send me a cover letter and resume if you're interested. </div>

<div>I've been contracting for a very large, unnamed Silicon Valley company that rhymes with disco for the past 3 weeks. It's been a total trip. It's a 3 month contract. Pay is really good - twice what I was making at my old job. Hours are crazy. I can work this job out and take a few months off, if I pinch pennies. Naw.

I've got a pretty good job prospect in Emeryville with a semi-startup that's growing like a weed. I interviewed with them twice and will be hearing from them by this Friday. It could be a very good job.

That's what's going on the job front. Personal front? That's up and down.</div>

Big Leaps and Shit

<div>I did the most scary but empowering thing on Friday. I gave my 2 weeks notice without having another job lined up.

Not too long ago, I was asked to transfer from one division of my former company that's pretty stable to another division that's got customer service issues AND their restructuring their support services. I thought it might be a good move as there are plenty of opportunities for advancement...until I started this horrendous 6 week training class to support this product.

6 weeks of training is a LOT of training. This is down from 8 weeks. Let me put this into perspective. UC Davis' quarters are 10 weeks long. I took Abstract Algebra and Real Analysis AND Quantum for 10 weeks. 6 weeks to learn the basic usage of a product to support it on a pretty low level is asinine.

It's more than that. The management has got a big problem. The place is a fucking squirrel factory. I was acting out a lot as well, making a lot of negative comments, calling executives on their bullshit, etc. White males just don't take it so well when told they're doing a bad job by a lowly WO-MAN. (Yes, I'm generalizing here.) On top of everything else, and what REALLY made to go “GET OUT,” I did something very stupid that could have possibly gotten me fired and they were catching on. It wasn't a big thing in the big picture. I wasn't stealing from the company. A couple of us who had had it with all the tests they were giving us started to share answers. Somebody fucked up and they found out. They wanted me bad enough that they may have kept me on, IF I started behaving myself, but I thought that it'd be better to put in my two weeks. It was time to gooooooo. I tendered my resignation on Friday, went in this morning, picked up my stuff and walked out with my head up high. I am free from that awful place.

I'm on the job hunt. I'm totally going for it: a data analyst job. They're in high demand. They want mathematical people to be data jockeys. Everything is shoved into some sort of datamart of another. They need people to make sense of all of it. I've got a lot of prospects, including one at Adobe that I really hope I get, and it appears that I will be increasing my salary by at least 50%, if not doubling it. I'm not kidding. The job at Adobe pays $80K/yr...for doing something that I love. FUCK YEAH!!!! I think I just tinkled myself a bit.

I haven't GOTTEN the job yet so that 80K/yr is all just speculation. Still, I'm confident that I will have a much better, more satisfying and much better paying job in about a month.</div>
