Neoconstitution of the United States of the Rich and Powerful
What with this years theme being the American Dream. I have taken the "liberty" of rewriting the preamble to the US constitution, the way Geroge Bush and his cronies might like it.We the Rich and Powerful of the United States, in Order to form a more profitable Union, establish Order, insure domestic control, provide for the defense of profits, promote the corporate Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Power to ourselves and ourselves alone without regard for future consequences. and do ordain and establish this NecConstitution for the United States of America.
Corporate Logo Blight
Look around you.How many corporate logos can you see? Now look at yourself, your shoes, your clothes. Are you wearing any corporate logos, Nike, Old Navy, etc?
The corporations have turned our world into a billboard. No matter where you are, there’s a corporate presence of some kind, reminding us at least on a subconscious level of one brand or another.
Symbols are nothing new. What is a corporate logo if not a symbol? They go back thousands of years to the dawn of mankind. Even before written language, Man created symbols to help augment oral traditions such as found in the cave drawings of Lascaux and Chauvet going back over 30,000 years. These symbols and drawings were used to communicate information about the lives of the people who created them. Numbers of animals killed in a season, marks of time, and perhaps even for pure enjoyment.
Today’s corporate logos communicate information as well. They also have a purpose. You know the answer. It is to remind us to buy their product, so that the corporations can make more money. It’s that simple.
Although my politics lean to the left, I have no great objection to capitalism, in and of itself. History has shown that even in the most communal societies, capitalism still has a way of finding a place in the scheme of things, but that is another topic. What I do object to is the billboardification of my world, the constant assault on my vision from this ubiquitous from of advertising. At least I can turn off the radio, the TV or tune to a station on the Pacifica network that has no corporate sponsors, but I cannot blind myself to my world where every product, every utility, every “thing” bears the mark of a symbol of corporate greed.
Black Rock City has always had a practice of “no corporate logos”. This year at Burning Man I will take this principle to heart. I will carry tape and BM logo stickers to cover all my own corporate logos and offer my supplies to assist anyone else to cover theirs as well.
This year at Burning man, let’s cover ALL corporate logos, yes I’m talking about the Camelback logo on your survival gear, the Colman logo on your lantern and for Pete’s sake, the Nike swoosh on your sneakers! Let’s not be billboards, throw away all your tee-shirts with corporate advertising on them, tear off the Old Navy and Levis tags on your clothes. Free your body of the symbols of corporate culture!
OK, I don’t expect ALL corporate logos to disappear from BRC this year, but I’m going to do my part to minimize them as much as possible.
Any hey, if you need a logo covered, or you’d like to pick up a cool Burning Man Logo sticker. I’ll be staying with the Burning Band at The Playground, 8:30 and Esplanade. For you folks that can’t make it to the burn this year, please at least think about your exposure to corporate symbols in your own space.
Love to all
