<a href="http://people.tribe.net/hatdog/blog/ef60f40b-a49b-437a-9313-24382fcf3c5d">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/9e1/54c/9e154cfc-fdcb-44f6-92a4-f52f02b92317.thumb" width="65" height="78" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>It's pretty much another "tell me something I couldn't figure out by myself" story, in my opinion, but common sense just don't get the respect it deserves.

from Reuters:
http://www.reuters.com/article/healthNews/idUSL0824271720071008?pageNumber=1

-------------------------------------------------

The questions asked whether people had emotional support, a chance to talk with someone about problems or whether they could count on a partner or close friend for something as simple as a ride to the grocery store, De Vogli said.

The team followed up over a 12-year period and found that people who reported that arguments, criticism and other types of conflict were common had a 34 percent greater risk of heart attacks or chest pain.

When the researchers stripped out risk factors such as obesity, smoking, drinking and family history, the chance of a heart attack was still 23 percent higher, De Vogli said.

"If you have good people around it is good for your health, he said in a telephone interview. "If you have negative people around it is much worse for your health."...

"It seems clear from this analysis that no matter if positive aspects of social relationships are having a significant protective effect, the negative impact seems far stronger," De Vogli said.

"People continually replay negative experiences."

-------------------------------------------------

So there you have it - bad relationships are worse than none at all. Not much of a surprise, but sometimes it's good to be reminded that there really are worse things than being alone. Like being a Yorkie forced to wear little pink and white dresses. Poor puppy, I really just wanted to post that picture someplace. I think it wants a nice matching hat.

    </a>
										<div>until a couple weeks ago, i hadn't been on tribe for months. october was my last log-in before january. and during that time i did write email, and i did post things occasionally elsewhere on the internet, and typed correspondence, etc. and i always used normal capitalization and punctuation.

i get back on tribe, and capitalizing doesn't feel right - and i want to put dashes in all of my sentences. not that i'm big on semicolons in "real life" - but i do know how to punctuate properly. so why don't i do it here? why does hitting the shift key suddenly feel almost pretentious?

i'm also feeling insecure about the way i do crossword puzzles in lower case. i think it's why i started to prefer the sudoku.</div>

<div>I don't know how to write this, there's so much I don't understand. I think about Sharkpup and I feel so sad and I feel guilty. I lost track of her about a year ago, when I lost track of everything - and now I want to kick myself for letting go of not just Sharkpup, but so many other people too. My friends' lives are not supposed to turn into David Lynch movies, but fuck man, sometimes it happens. And it's like everyone keeps saying, the thing about MeeMee was that she was good - really good. Her art was great, she took a lot of risks and always made wonderful things - she made things that made us happy. licka licka. It wasn't supposed to happen to her. I really liked that the OM posted the lyrics to "Minnie the Moocher" - thank you Michael!

I hope everyone saw Hjiorst's post about gathering at Zeitgeist this Tuesday evening "Gathering, Remembering, Chilling":

<div>summer must be coming on. but i'm feeling all like inhibited since well, you know. i was gonna mark it "friends only" but i don't think that's gonna hide my very personal information from the nsa?

four more days of school. i wish i could post pictures of the kids, because i'm not even kidding they are like the best looking kindergarten ever - not a troll in the bunch! anyway, that's not gonna happen. and they didn't just look pretty, don't get the wrong idea. they learned to read all 20 kindergarten words and then some, and most of them will count to 100 on demand. sadly, there are still a few boys who can't tie their shoes. sorry boys, but you know how it is - boys mature more slowly. hey - nothing personal! i'm talking about 5-year-olds!</div>

I'm not even kidding:

"Pentagon's National Security Agency, which specialises in eavesdropping and code-breaking, is funding research into the mass harvesting of the information that people post about themselves on social networks. And it could harness advances in internet technology - specifically the forthcoming "semantic web" championed by the web standards organisation W3C - to combine data from social networking websites with details such as banking, retail and property records, allowing the NSA to build extensive, all-embracing personal profiles of individuals."

The NSA is so smart! My Mom always told me, if you want people to be interested in you, show that you are interested in them. Thanks, NSA! Anyway, who didn't see this coming miles away? We should be flattered.

And why can't I make a goddamn text link on this stupid thing?

<div>now they are protesting a new law that says they can be fired. what the fuck? we americans got over that LONG AGO. we know we can be fired any time da boss pleases - as long as it's not due to proscribed discrimination, of course. so now in France, if you're under 26 you can be fired without explanation during the first two years of your employment. that's exactly like being a teacher in San Francisco, except if you are a teacher and you are fired, or not re-hired for a second year, you can't teach in the district anymore, ever. so should the teachers get all French about it? should I go stand in solidarity with my French brothers and sisters? no, because I'd look like Frank Chu standing out there protesting for my right not to get fired in America.

http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/03/16/news/france.php

godamnit. so this is what it's come to? protesting to keep from losing what you got? remember how irony supposedly died after 9/11? that's what I heard anyway, but it seems to me idealism took a much harder hit. never mind what could be, we're dealing with reality here... or something like it, anyway...</div>

<div>THE FOUR GHOSTS OF THE WHITE HOUSE
One night, George W. Bush is tossing restlessly in his White House bed. He awakens to see George Washington standing by him. Bush asks him, "George, whats the best thing I can do to help the country?" "Set an honest and honorable example, just as I did,"Washington advises, then fades away.

The next night, Bush is astir again, and sees the ghost of Thomas Jefferson moving through the darkened room. Bush calls out, "Tom, please! What is the best thing I can do to help the country?" "Respect the constitution, as I did, "Jefferson advises, and dims from sight.

The third night sleep is still not in the cards for Bush. He awakens to see the ghost of FDR hovering over his bed!!. Bush whispers, "Franklin, What is the best thing I can do to help the country?" "Help the less fortunate, just as I did,"FDR replies and fades into the mist.

Bush isn't sleeping well the fourth night when he sees another figure moving in the shadows. It is the ghost of Abraham Lincoln. Bush pleads,"Abe, what is the best thing I can do right now to help the country?" Lincoln replies, "GO SEE A PLAY."</div>

<div>we don't "torture" do we? well that depends on your definition of torture is:

http://news.findlaw.com/hdocs/docs/doj/bybee80102ltr.html

from the new york times:

"The memorandum, dated Aug. 1, 2002, defined torture narrowly under a federal law that prohibits it. Only pain like that accompanying "death, organ failure or the permanent impairment of a significant body function" qualifies, Mr. Bybee wrote. It went on to say torture is unlawful only if the infliction of pain is the offender's specific objective. "Even if the defendant knows that severe pain will result from his actions, if causing such harm is not his objective, he lacks the requisite specific intent," he wrote.

The memorandum also discussed various potential defenses to criminal prosecutions for torture, including necessity and self-defense. Finally, it asserted that the president was free under his authority as commander in chief to order torture notwithstanding treaties and laws barring it."

the guy who penned this for the justice dept., a lawyer named Jay S. Bybee, is now a judge on the 9th circuit court of appeals - his reward for a job well-done, presumably. the senate was denied access to this memo during his confirmation process - it wasn't released until june 2004.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A62516-2004Jun22.html

is there really anyone who believes our government isn't torturing detainees? is there anyone who believes that torture isn't torture unless the torturer clearly intends to torture?

gah - if my head weren't a swollen snot-balloon right now i'm sure i'd be able to make this make more sense. but oh well.</div>

										<div>is that i'm puke-sick and can't do anything else. someone really needs to come over here and give me some weed. now. fuckin flu.

ya know, wouldn't it have been nice if i finally showed up here all happy and healthy? sure it would have. but somehow, that just wouldn't be me...

i guess overall i'm happy enough, but i don't expect that to shine through today, not when i feel like this and i'm missing yet another day of work. and i'm really pissed about that because on tuesday i really was feeling good, and i had a whole week of work lined up, and several ongoing projects i was looking forward to doing. then again, now i get to lower my expectations one more time so that relatively things will soon seem lots better!

waaahhhh!!!!!!

so there. at least i'm consistent.</div>

    </a>
										<div>i hear this morning that the service workers are set to strike on thursday - but no one else is confirming that, yet. they give 24-hour notice before walking, and they probably wouldn't give more notice than is required. (i think it's required, i'm not sure?)

http://www.sfexaminer.com/articles/2005/11/15/news/20051115_ne05_strike.txt

"San Francisco Unified School District officials are preparing for a service employees&rsquo; strike that sources say is set for Thursday, barring a last-minute settlement."

so here we go! or do we? there won't be any last-minute settlement, that much seems clear. the two sides are too far apart for that to happen.

i'm somewhat removed from all of it because i haven't been able to work very much anyway. in fact, i'm hoping i can get surgery done during the strike since i won't get paid for taking time off for it anyway! i'm worried though, that the strike is going to take longer than my recovery (which is only supposed to take a week). who knows how long a strike could take?

the surgery i speak of is a laparoscopy - as soon as i can find a good doctor to properly cut the offending tissues out of me. that is, of course, much easier said than done - but i'm gonna start ranting about my so-called "treatment options" if i don't leave it at that. and really, that rant is better left for a whole other blog entry... it'll be a good one, i promise!</div>

my problems with the word "queer".

<div>i want to be able to call people and things queer without being thought to be a homophobe - c'mon, i don't mean it in a sexual way! seriously. i try to not use the word, but i feel like it flies out of me all the damn time.

just a few minutes ago here i posted a comment to a friend's blog that i wished he'd "stop doing queer shit" or something like that. then after i posted it, i read it back and realized i did it again. i didn't mean to imply that anything he was doing was somehow homosexual, but you'd think by now i'd have trained myself to *just not use the word "queer" because i don't know how.*

so look, i wish we just go back to the old meaning of queer? what should i say instead? dorky? i hate that word, dorky is dorky. and that's like saying dicky, really. thesaurus.com gave me:

anomalous, atypical, bizarre, crazy, curious, demented, disquieting, doubtful, droll, dubious, eccentric, eerie, erratic, extraordinary, fishy, flaky, fly ball, freaky, funny, idiosyncratic, irrational, irregular, kinky, kooky, mad, mysterious, odd, oddball, outlandish, outr?, peculiar, puzzling, quaint, questionable, remarkable, shady, singular, strange, suspicious, touched, unbalanced, uncanny, uncommon, unconventional, unhinged, unnatural, unorthodox, unusual, wacky

fly ball? of course that made me think of a fly with testicles.

*sigh* i'm so wrong. queer is just a really good word - it rolls off the tongue, it's a euphonious word, and i admit it, it feels good to say. queer queer queer queer queer. damnit.</div>

<div>nope, not yet. service workers are looking to strike thursday, and if they do, teachers have declared that they aren't crossing the picket lines. of course, the teachers' union is about a step behind seiu790, so even if it doesn't start thursday, the teachers themselves are most likely going to walk soon.

teachers might do a work slow-down or some alternative to a strike, but that won't work for the seiu members. well, i have been waiting for this for months now. of course that doesn't mean i'm prepared. but i'm glad they waited until after the election!

City officials scramble to avoid school strike
By Bonnie Eslinger

In an effort to avoid a Thursday school strike by service employees &#8212; which some teachers are threatening to honor &#8212; city officials huddled in the Mayor&amp;rsquo;s Office on Tuesday evening to review potential funding sources for some of the demands being made by the union.

Mayor Gavin Newsom and San Francisco School Superintendent Arlene Ackerman met with Controller Ed Harrington, who reviewed the district&amp;rsquo;s budget with the approval of the school board. Harrington said there was enough additional monies to possibly fund the first year of union&amp;rsquo;s current demands, but not necessarily any years beyond.

Newsom is also scheduled to meet with labor officials today, according to his spokesman.

The contract for Service Employees International Union Local 790 &#8212; which represents the school district&amp;rsquo;s cafeteria, custodial, clerical and other behind-the-scenes workers &#8212; expired in July after 10 months of negotiations. The key issues are health care coverage for dependents and wage increases.

Last week, the union rejected the district&amp;rsquo;s latest offer, which included a 1 percent increase starting next school year, followed by a 2 percent increase starting in June 2007. It also included dependent health care coverage that is capped at $410 &#8212; 75 percent of the current cost for two dependents.

Union officials said they would settle for nothing less than a 4 percent increase and the dependent health care coverage, without a price cap.

The difference between the two proposals is approximately $1 million for two years, according to district estimates.

Ackerman&amp;rsquo;s main concern is the uncertainty of future health care costs, since they are unpredictable and expected to rise. According to district officials, health care costs have seen doubledigit rises in the last two years.

SEIU spokesman Thomas Dewar countered that the unpredictability of future costs was precisely why the union was fighting, because increased costs would unfairly burden the employee.

Ackerman has also warned that whatever concessions are made to the SEIU will also be expected by other unions that are also currently in negotiations. However, San Francisco&amp;rsquo;s teachers union &#8212; which approved a resolution last week calling on district teachers to honor a strike by SEIU, if called &#8212; submitted a letter to the district on Tuesday vowing not to ask for equal dependent health coverage if the district came to an agreement with the service employees.

<div>i've been hearing this for a while now - our soon-to-be-ex school superintendent arlene ackerman is a proponent of segregated schools.

it's such a short article, i'll post it all:

Chicago plans high school for black males

CHICAGO, Nov. 6 (UPI) -- The Chicago school district plans to open an all-boys high school primarily for black teenagers.

The Urban Prep Charter Academy for Young Men must be approved by the Board of Education this month, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Mayor Richard Daley plans to open 100 schools in the city in the next five years. Plans for the next two years include a virtual elementary school, a high school operated by the University of Chicago and a high school stressing business entrepreneurship.

Urban Prep would be located inside Englewood High School. Backers say it is aimed at a group that has the lowest graduation rate of any in the city.

"We're going to take our students where they are and help them gain admission to college and succeed once they are there," said Tim King, the founder of Urban Prep. "Clearly there is a high need for figuring out how to serve these kids academically."

------------

why is it that Mayor Daley and Tim King and their supporters can't be bothered to do anything to help the schools all these kids are dropping out of? argh.</div>

    </a>
										<div>i've finally been back on tribe a few times over the last 4 or 5 days - and i seem to have already been booted from a tribe! without even trying! i wish moderators would tell me when i'm getting the boot (with one exception, who should know who he is, although i haven't given him the chance to boot me much lately).

anyway - hello!

it's kind of frightening to be back, all the tribes on my list with 1000+ unread posts. i think i need to go down the list, hit each tribe, and clear them all off. but it seems like cheating.

i'm still all fucked up sick - i'm home today attempting to petition my doctors office for stronger painkillers. vicodin doesn't really work so well anymore... i don't know if it's my tolerance, or i'm getting worse? hey, i know! maybe i should turn my tribe blog into my pain journal! today it would go like this:

5am (pain level 6)- woke up - pain mostly left side, middle/lower abdomen. nauseous. 5/500 vicodin. went back to sleep.

8am (6)- woke up - nauseous, feels like there's a nerf football stashed in my abdominal cavity. standing up provokes deep stabbing achy pain mostly on left side, also around diaphragm. 600mgs ibuprofen.

9am (5-6)- 5/500 vicodin.

10:40am (4 as long as i stay still in bed, 6 when i move) still nauseous. in bed. i think typing also makes me nauseous, but too bad.

600mgs ibuprofen? disgusting - i'm only doing it because the new doctor told me to so i'm trying to work with her in good faith. 600mgs ibuprofen 4x/day is what i'm supposed to take staggered between the vics - mostly to prove that it won't help, from my point of view. see, everytime you go to a new doctor, they have to go back and repeat things that you've already done with your previous doctor. they can't seem to understand that the treatment has already been tried and failed - they have to do whatever they would do if they were the first doctor you ever saw for the problem. but i've found it does no good to argue with them. it's better to go along with what they want and let them see for themselves, because otherwise they won't believe. and while it's uncomfortable for me, i know it's not going to kill me or even make the endo worse - so i play nice and do what they want so they don't cut me off altogether. i do what they want and hope like hell that they'll see i'm trying to work with them, it's just not working. my biggest fear is being cut off from - or now, undersupplied with - painkillers, because if that happens, i'll be incapacitated.

narcotics are a delicate subject because of the assumption that many people are scamming for them. i don't even *like* them! well, okay i never tried anything stronger than percodan, but if i'm not in pain i have no need or desire to gulp down vicodin.

i'm learning about pain management. to manage chronic pain, drugs (usually opioids) have to be taken continuously. if i don't keep to the schedule, i get "breakthrough pain" and that's a bad thing. not just because it hurts, but because it hurts lots and it takes extra drugs to get back to a tolerable baseline. my prescription is for dosing every six hours. that's a big problem - vicodin wears off in four hours, and is gone after six. the doctor's theory was that the ibuprofen would "cover" for the vicodin between doses, but it doesn't work. would it work if i took two vicodin every four hours? don't know, that's more than my prescription currently allows, so if i try it and it works but the doctor won't change the scrip i'd come up short very soon.

these are the things that consume my thoughts. sitting, waiting, wishing the nurse practitioner would call me back (i've already called twice). wishing i was at work, or at least *doing something*! i'm trying to have a matter-of-fact attitude about it - it won't kill me, i have to be patient and wait and hope i can get a decent surgeon to do a laparoscopy sooner than later. i don't think much past that - to the "what if the surgery doesn't help?" questions that other people like to bring up more than i do. hell, if the surgery doesn't help, at least maybe i'll be taken a little more seriously just for having had it, and i figure that's got to help, even if the operation doesn't.

oooh! now it's almost noon - i'm gonna try taking two vicodin at once and see it that helps me get out of bed! (and i'm going to resist the urge to start going on about how lame i feel sometimes that i can't just "work through it.")

maybe i'll photoshop like makes some art or something, that's kinda like doing something. </div>

    </a>
										<div>"i miss my hatdog" someone wrote me recently. it made me sad, i miss me, too.

i've avoided the subject here for a while now, but it's reaching a new level and becoming more difficult to ignore. i seem to have endometriosis. i say "seem to" because one can *only* get an official diagnosis for the disease by way of an expensive operation (is there any other kind?) called a laparoscopy (or through other, more invasive surgery).

eh, what's that you say? what the fuck is endometriosis? well...

"With Endometriosis, tissue like that which lines the uterus (the endometrium) is found outside the womb in other areas of the body. Normally, the endometrium is shed each month through menses; however, with Endometriosis, these implants have no way of leaving the body. The implants still break down and bleed, but result is far different than in women and girls without the disease: internal bleeding, degeneration of blood and tissue shed from the growths, inflammation of the surrounding areas, and formation of scar tissue result. In addition, depending on the location of the growths, interference with the normal function of the bowel, bladder, intestines and other areas of the pelvic cavity can occur. Endometriosis has also been found lodged in the skin - and even the brain."

okay so it's not just bad cramps.

and shut up - i do NOT have endometriosis of the brain!

but sometimes i think i may as well. i'm in pain 24-7, controlled fairly well with prescription pain meds. unfortunately, either it's getting worse, or i'm building a tolerance to the drug, and i'm in perpetual fear that the doctor will decide i'm abusing my scrip and cut me off. in which case i would end up in the emergency room, which is at least better than trying to score from the nice people who stand in front of o'looneys at night. i've been told there's a man that comes by there who can get you anything - a for real ghetto street pharmacist. that was a while back, but last month i heard a story about a similar guy in chicago on npr. he sold people not just stuff to get high, but blood pressure meds, heart meds, all kinds of drugs they couldn't afford through a doctor (especially when you figure that you have to add the costs of office visits, tests, etc. when dealing with the system).

my mind goes in those directions because i don't have insurance and the "diagnostic" surgery runs $6,000-15,000. not that i'm going to get a backroom laparoscopy (if there is such a thing), but i may not get one at all, or not for a long while, so it looks like i'm going to be learning about pain management in the meantime.

this picture is an artist's conception of a laparoscopy - conveniently leaving out those other messy internal organs that have a tendency to get in the surgeon's way. if the tissue is behind an organ, this type of surgery can't remove it, so there's no guarantee that it will even reduce the pain. also, there may be spots of tissue missed because they are too small to see, and those will continue to grow.

there is a less expensive alternative - induced menopause! oh yay! but even that they can only do for six months, it still costs $400/month, doesn't always work, and can have extreme side effects like bone loss, joint pain, and fatigue that *never go away*. oh yeah, also, after the treatment (which shrinks the offending tissues - and your breasts) the stuff often grows back, and the pain and other problems come back with it. (this is starting to sound like fun, huh?)

i imagine it's been easy to assume i've been around less because i got a boyfriend (and he's a cute one, woo hoo!) and okay i confess that's part of it. (hi boyfriend!) but believe me, he also sees less of me because of this shit - and then there is all the time we ARE together, and i'm clutching a heating pad to my abdomen refusing to even walk two blocks to get something to eat. woo hoo! party like a viking!! thanks, boyfriend.

yep, i'm having way too much fun to think about my friends, or tribe, or even eating most of the time! and i'm still trying to make lame jokes about it. hopefully i don't come off too pathetic, and if anyone knows a really good gyn in the bay area that might want my money, please message me directly and i will be forever grateful.</div>

    </a>
										<div>"The president was a blur of blinks, taps, jiggles, pivots and shifts. Bush has always been an active man, but standing with Lauer and the serene, steady first lady, he had the body language of a man wishing urgently to be elsewhere.

"The fidgeting clearly corresponded to the questioning. When Lauer asked if Bush, after a slow response to Katrina, was "trying to get a second chance to make a good first impression," Bush blinked 24 times in his answer. When asked why Gulf Coast residents would have to pay back funds but Iraqis would not, Bush blinked 23 times and hitched his trousers up by the belt.

"When the questioning turned to Miers, Bush blinked 37 times in a single answer -- along with a lick of the lips, three weight shifts and some serious foot jiggling. Laura Bush, by contrast, delivered only three blinks and stood still through her entire answer about encouraging volunteerism."

    </a>
										<div>"Minnesota Vikings players are being investigated in connection with a lake cruise that turned into a wild sex party last week on Lake Minnetonka. The party became so out of control that crew members on the two yachts were offered money for sex and feared for their safety, law enforcement authorities and an attorney for the cruise company said Tuesday..."

***my favorite detail:
"The accusations come on the heels of a two-day retreat in which a code of conduct was at the forefront, the team is "on the same page" when it comes to standards for player conduct..."

heheh - really?

"Almost immediately after boarding, crew members noticed partially disrobed women walking around, he said. One employee opened a galley and three nude women popped out, he said.

Then the crew -- about five people on each boat -- saw women giving lap dances for money.

"Players were approaching the wait staff telling them they would be tipped if they danced," Doyle said.

The players started to become more aggressive, wanting to pour their own drinks and screaming at the bartenders, he said. Naked woman walked around without hesitation. They performed oral sex in the open, he said. Sex toys were strewn about, he said."

WOO HOO!!! PARTY!!!!!
