"Songwriting is essentially two things- a way of telling a story and an emotional response to that story," says Hauk. "No matter what you sing about, it is inherently an emotional reaction. There is no logic to it, no bold declarations of philosophy backed by reason- it is all passion and soul. Whether it be a love song or a lamentation or a political song, the base is all how you as a songwriter feel and react to the story. Love songs are the obvious example, but take political songs- most bands that write about politics are only reacting to an event- there is no logical solution to the problem presented in the song, usually only outrage or frustration."
