The Portland Hawthorne Hostel

There's nowhere in Portland that's more laid-back and quirky than Southeast. And there's nowhere you can stay in Portland that's more laid-back and quirky than the Portland Hawthorne Hostel, right in the middle of Southeast.

About the Hostel

The Hawthorne Hostel started life as a house built in 1909. Inside, you'll find the walls are painted all different colors, there's mosaics on the fireplace in the dining room, and it's all topped off with an ecoroof, a roof covered in soil and plants to make the building more sustainable, on the second floor.

Downstairs is the men's dorm and a coed dorm. The kitchen, dining room and office are on the ground floor with a large porch out front and an enclosed back porch with laundry facilities, lockers and bike rentals. The private rooms are on the third floor, and a room that serves as an extra coed dorm in the summer, and an extra private room in the winter. We're part of Hostelling International, a global non-profit organization that makes sure its hostels follow business and cleanliness standards.

We throw a variety of events for visitors and the community, especially during the summer. We have a community potluck brunch every Sunday, and summer brings weekly Open Mic Nights in our yard, outdoor and 'bike in' movies.

We also feature:

• 24 hour access, no lock-out or curfew
• Free wireless internet and a high speed internet kiosk
• Free local courtesy phone; phone cards available for purchase
• Free parking
• Free bagels, gourmet bread and pastries
• $1 DIY pancake breakfast
• Coffee and tea
• Discount bicycle rentals onsite
• Lockers and laundry facilities

About our Neighborhood

The Hawthorne Hostel is located on Hawthorne Boulevard in the Sunnyside neighborhood, in the heart of Southeast Portland. Lonely Planet calls Hawthorne one of Portland's most youthful and dynamic neighborhoods, and with good reason. In less than ten minutes you can walk to dozens of coffeehouses, pubs, thrift stores, alternative and hippie boutique stores, ethnic and vegetarian restaurants and cafés, organic grocery stores, plus several discount movie houses, a Zen meditation center, and lots of eccentric attractions. We're also only a 15-minute bus ride from downtown Portland.

What Our Guests Have To Say

March 31, 2007
I stayed here in October on a vacation from Alaska (which is not a part of the US, I've surmised, from the lack of mention in any guidebook for the US I've ever seen), on the recommendation of a friend who works at this fine establishment.

I must say, it will not disappoint, no matter if you stay in a private room or in a shared room (I did both in my week's stay in the PDX). Free Wi-Fi connection, great location (right in the Hawthorne district...if you can't find something to do there, you must be dead), on the bus route (one bus, 15-minute ride to get downtown), a very personable and courteous staff, and most importantly, a BBQ joint right next door.

So yeah, stay here. It's well worth it. I know I will be stating again on my next visit to Portland. And say hi to Brandon for me if you do stay. The end.

I stayed at the Hawthorne Hostel in January 2006. I'd just come from the HI in Seattle, and I'd hated it -- clean and safe, sure, lots of amenities, but a big monolith where nobody talked to each other, which had just felt like a hotel with bunk beds.

The Hawthorne Hostel was a breath of fresh air. It was clean and safe too, but it was also quirky, personable and fun, with a staff and guests who were engaging and likable. I stayed for a weekend, and made friends I still talk to a year later.

I liked it so much that when I knew I'd be coming back to Portland, I wrote and asked them if they had any cleaning positions available. And now I work there.

Hawthorne Street hostel Gets Greener
By: Lisa Libby, BES
Mon, 11/20/2006

In 2001, the Hawthorne Hostel (3031 SE Hawthorne Boulevard) installed an ecoroof with a $5,000 grant from the City of Portland's Community Watershed Stewardship Grant Program. Now this neighborhood landmark is about to get a lot greener.

Construction is expected to start this January on the Hawthorne Hostel Rainwater Demonstration Project. The design includes two 3,000-gallo... read more

Our ecoroof and our night manager are in this week's Portland Tribune.

On page A9 there's an article about ecoroofs in Portland, which mostly consists of an interview with our night manager Greg about his ecoroofing business. There's a picture of the hostel, with the caption "Portland Hawthorne Hostel's ecoroof is one of the most high-profile residential green roof projects in Portland." Unfortunately, the article isn't on the Tribune's website.

The Hawthorne Hostel is a non-profit organization, and volunteers are a big part of what makes us work. If you have some spare time, whether it's a few hours a week or a month, volunteering at the hostel is a fun time and a great way to meet people from all over the world.

We're always looking for:

• ACTIVITY COORDINATORS: Introduce our guests to the local community and culture, by activities you lead. You could plan an event at the hostel or lead a tour in Portland or in the surroun... read more
