As most of you know, Ive been spending the summer since I quit my last gig sleeping in, partying, riding my motorcycle, and generally being a drain on society. :D Last week, I got a phone call out of the clear blue sky from one of the vendors that used to work for me at my old job, asking me to come out for lunch at my favorite Indian food restaurant.

I figure "what the hell?" and head down to Silicon Valley on the bike, figuring the worst that can happen is I get to catch up and get a free meal. So after eating lunch with the bizdev manager and shooting the proverbial shit, we head back to the office and I get herded into a conference room with the CTO, wearing my bike leathers, my finest T-shirt, and my blue hair. After a little while of talking about of old times, the tension is beginning to mount and I'm starting to wonder "So what the fuck did you ask me here for? I know it wasn't a burning desire to make sure I wasn't going hungry..." Eventually, they start telling me some of the problems they are working on, and I, without a hitch, start telling them exactly how their technology works without being prompted. So a little more bullshiitting later and the CTO starts elbowing the bizdev manager going " So why don't you ask him if he can help us?" I tell the I might be interested in doing a little part-time consulting on the interesting parts of what they're working on and they say they'll get back with me next week to iron out the details. One of these days I should really update my resume...
So I decided to give notice at work on Friday. My gig went from cool technology development to hideously tedious paperwork with almost unbelievable speed over the last several months and I finally decided that life is WAY too short to do something you hate with a passion. My last day will be May 30th, and I am soooooo looking forward to not having to do the 9 to 5 thing. Of course at some point I will have to decide what the hell I am doing next, but not for a while, and oddly enough, I am experiencing no anxiety whatsoever on the subject. In the meantime there's quite a bit I'd like to do with the profound level of freedom this is going to afford me.

After 12 days of, well let's just go ahead and call it hell. 12 hour days, no weekends, cold, windy, living in a hotel room and working in an aircraft hangar with my voice gone, trying to test piece of shit software for anal-retentive government witnesses. Remind me not to do that again. My only reprieve was slipping away to Tahoe on Easter.
