Shake off those same-ol'-bellydance blues and jump-start the new year with some scintillating TURKISH ROMAN FUSION & graceful FLOORWORK! Elizabeth Strong is an incredible dancer - a member of Arabesque with Zoe and the SF Bay Area supertroupe the Barbary Coast Shakedown. She often performs with Ultra Gypsy, Mira Betz, and the Toids with Rachel Brice and Mardi Love. Elizabeth studied authentic Turkish Roman dance while living in Istanbul amongst Rom ("Gypsy") families. She is a featured instructor at Kosmos World Music & Dance Camp in California.

SUNDAY * 1/13 * WORKSHOPS

Both workshops are open to all levels of experience. Please wear yoga or stretchy pants, a simple hip sash, and a comfortable top.

10:30-12:30 * TURKISH ROMAN FUSION:
Turkish Rom dance is richly expressive and playful, passionate and fun. Learn the dance in its original form to 9/8 music, then fuse it to other dance elements using non-traditional music. We will create a scintillating, original fusion choregraphy, drawing on the technique and knowledge of the folkloric form. Visualize the Barbary Coast Shakedown's infamous fedoras and pinstripes piece, but with a more feminine touch.

1:00-3:00 * FLOORWORK & STRENGTHENING:
Utilize levels more effectively and move gracefully across the floor. We will begin with stretching and strengthening exercises as well as safety awareness for our knees, and then learn a combination that can be easily integrated into any dance choreography. This class is also excellent for those wishing to combine floorwork with prop balancing. Bring a sword or tray for an extra challenge! Knee pads and a yoga mat are recommended. A few mats may be available to purchase or borrow if needed.

The BDSS tour is not stopping in Seattle but the lovely Kami has graciously agreed to sacrifice her day off from the tour to teach a workshop for us! We will dance in a huge renovated 1930's ballroom *with mirrors*. It doesn't get much better than that! Oh, and did I mention we'll have snax? ;o)

FUNKY COMBOS:
This fun workshop plays with changing the intensity and timing of movements while combining slow snake-like movements with fast staccato moves. A few combinations will be introduced that will flow together into a short choreography.

About Kami Liddle:
Kami's style is what she calls a modern fusion of an ancient dance. Although she is primarily a tribal dancer, she pulls from the various styles of belly dance that she has studied, as well as modern, hip hop, jazz, and bhangra dance. Kami performs both as a solo artist and collaborates with other dancers, such as The Indigo and Boom Boom Bollywood. Kami was nominated "Best Kept Secret" and Best Interpretive Artist" in 2005 for Zaghareet Magazine and won the title "Entertainer of the Year 2005" at Wiggles of the West. Kami currently tours with the Bellydance Superstars.

Feeling SEPARATION ANXIETY for ditching your sweetie on Valentine's Day to go dancing? It's ok, Mardi will make it all right. At my special request, she is dressing up her Sunday best with ASSUIT & TIE. And then top it all off with some CLANKY PANKY. Go ahead, take the day off on Monday. Goody, a bunch of drills that ask for a little concentration. Enjoy an afternoon of quirky patterns while keeping timely hips on the back burner. Indulge; it's good for you. Belly dance experience of a penchant for patting your head and rubbing the tummy recommended.

THAT'S HOW WE ROLL
Spend the first part of class brushing up on slow technique, with some emphasis on belly rolls... perhaps Mardi's favorite constituent of quintessential belly dance. We'll be making room for them in basic movements with layering, and working them into combinations. Movements will be broken down and drilled. Belly rolls for some hours... consider that as you enjoy your breakfast.

ASSUIT AND TIE : Abbreviated Costume Forum
We'll take a little time out from belly-churning to talk costuming. Mardi's spent some years stitching up little numbers as a member of Urban Tribal, The Indigo, and Bellydance Superstars, and is willing to shed a little light on her approaches to costuming. **This is another Seattle exclusive - never offered before and may never happen again!**

MASTER CLASS: RAPID-FIRE COMBO SERIES
We'll wrap up Day 3 with some quality time with Mardi to nourish us until we meet again. Students will be dealt a series of signature combinations , many with a common thread. String em together to form a choreography or use them separately with tribal improv. Movements will be broken down and drilled ruthlessly/endlessly. Bring zils along if you're so inclined, and we'll add some percussive interest. **Zils are an *optional* part of a few combos for those up to the challenge. The whole workshop does not involve zils. Don't be skeered!**

This smaller master class is only available as part of a multi-day pass or a single workshop with permission from Helenwheels to maintain the flow of instruction established over the weekend.
