Editorial Reviews - From Publishers Weekly
This exposé of the treatment meted out to American veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan is a breathtaking rebuke to government hypocrisy and an overdue contribution to gaining critical public awareness of this official neglect. Glantz (How America Lost Iraq), who covered the American occupation of Iraq, offers a thorough account of the plight U.S. vets face back home—from the understaffed Veterans Administration perversely geared to saving money at the expense of vets in dire need of help, to concomitant medical and social ills, including undiagnosed brain injuries and the too frequent perils of homelessness, crime and suicide. There is also grassroots resistance and mutual aid, including the eventual passage of the post 9/11 GI Bill of Rights in May 2008, fiercely opposed by the Bush administration and the Republican Congress (including John McCain). Glantz fleshes out his narrative with the voices and powerful stories of vets, their families and advocates, while helpfully including a host of resources and services for veterans. Glantz also places their experience in a longer, dismal history of government neglect, while backing up his assertion that the Bush administration has never been seriously interested in helping veterans with damning evidence. DUCK YOUR HEAD! It's an ambush!!
I'm so sick and tired of seeing YES on 8 ads in Tribe every single time that I click on a different page - not to mention the ads in newspapers, the radio and on t.v. Jesus! California is being ambushed by people who want to write discrimination into the constitution and it really scares me.Last week, I passed some YES 8 folks when I was at a red light and said, "I hate discrimination." The teenage girl yelled at me, "well I hate you." It helped me understand the mentality we're dealing with here.
I'm also tired of seeing all the images of family tied to Prop 8. Marriage isn't just about procreating. I've read the argument that, traditionally, it is. If that's the case, are marriages between a man and woman who choose not to have children, wrong? What about marriages where the couple can't have children?
This proposition really pisses me off and *scares* me even more. If this proposition passes, who will they discriminate against next and for what?
Fiddley-die-doe-day!
Anyone know of a fiddle teacher in the East Bay - preferrably Oakland/Berkeley? S.F.ish is okay too...I wanna pick it up again.
My fiddle has been collecting dust for far too long.
Raccoooooooooon!
Many of you know that we lost our sweet kitty, Raccoon, a year and a half ago. It was a sudden loss and one that can easily make me cry if I think of it.Last night I had a dream that Raccoon was on my living room floor. I knew he'd died, so I was unsure if I should try to pet him. I was afraid my hand would go through to the floor as if he was a ghost, but I really wanted to feel him.
I decided to try and I was able to touch him him. :) I picked him up and held him tightly, warmly, and lovingly for the longest time. I sobbed deeply with joy and sorry equally mixed. I held him knowing it wasn't going to last and that he was really gone. I was able to feel his heavy body again, and his big feet on my hands where I was supporting him.
Last night, right before I went to bed, I listened to some recordings of his meow that I have in my phone. I think that's why he was in my dream.
I miss that guy so much still, it hurts.
