Editorial Reviews - From Publishers Weekly

This exposé of the treatment meted out to American veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan is a breathtaking rebuke to government hypocrisy and an overdue contribution to gaining critical public awareness of this official neglect. Glantz (How America Lost Iraq), who covered the American occupation of Iraq, offers a thorough account of the plight U.S. vets face back home—from the understaffed Veterans Administration perversely geared to saving money at the expense of vets in dire need of help, to concomitant medical and social ills, including undiagnosed brain injuries and the too frequent perils of homelessness, crime and suicide. There is also grassroots resistance and mutual aid, including the eventual passage of the post 9/11 GI Bill of Rights in May 2008, fiercely opposed by the Bush administration and the Republican Congress (including John McCain). Glantz fleshes out his narrative with the voices and powerful stories of vets, their families and advocates, while helpfully including a host of resources and services for veterans. Glantz also places their experience in a longer, dismal history of government neglect, while backing up his assertion that the Bush administration has never been seriously interested in helping veterans with damning evidence. </a>
										<div>I'm so sick and tired of seeing YES on 8 ads in Tribe every single time that I click on a different page - not to mention the ads in newspapers, the radio and on t.v. Jesus! California is being ambushed by people who want to write discrimination into the constitution and it really scares me.

Last week, I passed some YES 8 folks when I was at a red light and said, "I hate discrimination." The teenage girl yelled at me, "well I hate you." It helped me understand the mentality we're dealing with here.

I'm also tired of seeing all the images of family tied to Prop 8. Marriage isn't just about procreating. I've read the argument that, traditionally, it is. If that's the case, are marriages between a man and woman who choose not to have children, wrong? What about marriages where the couple can't have children?

This proposition really pisses me off and *scares* me even more. If this proposition passes, who will they discriminate against next and for what?</div>

										<div>Many of you know that we lost our sweet kitty, Raccoon, a year and a half ago. It was a sudden loss and one that can easily make me cry if I think of it.

Last night I had a dream that Raccoon was on my living room floor. I knew he'd died, so I was unsure if I should try to pet him. I was afraid my hand would go through to the floor as if he was a ghost, but I really wanted to feel him.

I decided to try and I was able to touch him him. :) I picked him up and held him tightly, warmly, and lovingly for the longest time. I sobbed deeply with joy and sorry equally mixed. I held him knowing it wasn't going to last and that he was really gone. I was able to feel his heavy body again, and his big feet on my hands where I was supporting him.

Last night, right before I went to bed, I listened to some recordings of his meow that I have in my phone. I think that's why he was in my dream.

I miss that guy so much still, it hurts. </div>

    </a>
										<div>My friend (Stefania!) gave me yellow roses at work Monday and they have cute little bugs in 'em. Since the roses are now dying, I put them on the corner of my desk to remind myself to toss 'em in the garden so the little bugs can be free and move onto their next journey.

I walked past the roses a bit ago and the simple motion made some of the rose peddles trickle to the floor.

It made me wonder what the journey down to the floor on a peddle must be like for the little green bugs. I pictured it happening in slow-motion as if the bugs surfed a peddle down the hundreds of long millimeters to the ground FAR below them. Could they hear the violent wind passing them like I heard when I jumped out of a plane at 14,000 feet? Is it anything like that for them? Can they get the elevador feeling? Do they even wonder how long the fall will take since they can't see the floor below. Did it feel like infinity because they are SO dayamn small?

There are many important things to think about in this life, and these are clearly some of them.</div>

    </a>
										<div>The petition link:
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/stop-fumigation-of-citizens-without-their-consent-in-california

********************
Tens of thousands California residents are being sprayed under the cover of night with pesticides containing partly unknown chemicals. These sprayings, conducted inadequate health studies, are done not to protect residents from a clear and present public health danger, but rather to protect special interests worried about eradicating the Light Brown Apple Moth (LBAM).

The LBAM spray operations in Central Coast counties of Monterey and Santa Cruz resulted in over 600 reports of health illnesses. State authorities have not only failed to respond, but now plan new LBAM aerial spray operations in the San Francisco Bay Area.

A VOTE IS SCHEDULED IN SACRAMENTO ON WEDNESDAY THAT COULD STOP SPRAYING WITHOUT CONSENT. PLEASE SIGN THIS PETITION NOW AND SEND THIS PETITION TO YOUR FRIENDS!

Californians have a right to refuse aerial fumigation without proof of a clear and present public health danger. Any mandatory aerial spraying of chemicals must be shown to address a clear and present public health danger, and must be voted on and supported by the people in the area to be sprayed.

More Information:

The LBAM aerial spraying has been ordered by the Secretary of Agriculture, and due to a declared "state of emergency," representatives and residents are currently legally powerless to stop this. The legitimacy of this so-called "emergency" is uncertain; the LBAM poses no risk to human health but rather a contested threat to certain crops and plants.

Yet, government agencies approving the LBAM plan admit that the pesticide could pose a threat to some people, stating "not all health effects can be predicted and because the general population includes susceptible (people), such as children, the elderly and those with chronic diseases, we cannot provide a definitive cause for their symptoms [experienced after the spraying in Santa Cruz and Monterey]."

Read the following letter from Assemblymember John Laird of the 27th district to the Secretary of Agriculture demanding explanation. In his letter on September 24, 2007 you will see a dialog between the Assemblymember and the Secretary on this issue: http://democrats.assembly.ca.gov/members/a27/moth.htm

The bottom line is that the Secretary of Agriculture secured power to conduct LBAM aerial spraying of chemicals which at least in part were of unknown composition over urban areas of California against public outcry and concern.

We need laws that protect us and our environment, not special interests, and to ensure that we are not subjected to chemicals against our individual rights without an immediate health danger, due process, and a public vote.

    </a>
										<div>Last night as the lunar eclipse took place, I was with my grandma, mom and dad. Grandma was dying.

We'd just switched shifts with my aunt. She explained some particulars we needed to be aware of for some of grandma's final needs and then left to have dinner with her sister.

As I held grandma's right hand, we showered her with words of comfort and love. We stayed very close. I stroked her hair, kissed her forehead and reminded her how much she is loved.

At 9:38 she took a last breath. We circled around her and cried. A few moments later, she took another breath and continued. That scared us for a sec and through our tears we giggled some sort of relief that she hadn't really gone. Grandma psyched us out. Soon again, she went through the motions of soft breathing with nothing coming in or going out. She was gone at 9:40 p.m. on the night of a full moon eclipse and I was still holding her hand.

There is so much comfort in knowing she went exactly as she wanted to...naturally. With all the other physical problems she had, her death could have been very different. Her last meal on Saturday morning was from leftovers of her favorite dish the night before - butternut squash ravioli from Pasta Pomodoro. The last person she saw before she closed her eyes for the last time on Saturday was her youngest daughter, Jill.

Watching someone leave this world as we know it is a remarkable thing. This is the second time I've been the other bookend to someone's life. The first was my great-grandmother (this grandma's mom) 12 years ago today. I have been given the good fortune of being with both of them when they died - mother and daughter.

Of course leave it to pops to make us smile. He said that if he's ever in the hospital and sees me come in, he's runnin' out! :)

Anyway, when my great-grandmother died with me, I was connected to my great-great grandparents who were there when she came into this world. Last night I was connected to her again through my grandma Mimi.

It's also a remarkable thing to watch my mom's process of accepting the loss of her mommy. No matter how old you are, you are always a child when it comes down to it. Watching my mom process each moment last night broke my heart. My dad has known grandma Mimi since he was 17, so he lost another parent last night.

Going through what I went through last night reinforced that there is nothing more important in my life than my loved-ones. All the woes in the world or in my full life pale in comparison to what I have with them.

Rest in peace grandma.</div>

										<div>http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071106/ap_on_fe_st/odd_detention_for_hugging

Illinois Student Gets Dention for Hugging.

MASCOUTAH, Ill. - Two hugs equals two days of detention for 13-year-old Megan Coulter. The eighth-grader was punished for violating a school policy banning public displays of affection when she hugged two friends Friday.

"I feel it is crazy," said Megan, who was to serve her second detention Tuesday after classes at Mascoutah Middle School.

"I was just giving them a hug goodbye for the weekend," she said.

Megan's mother, Melissa Coulter, said the embraces weren't even real hugs — just an arm around the shoulder and slight squeeze.

"It's hilarious to the point of ridicule," Coulter said. "I'm still dumbfounded that she's having to do this."

District Superintendent Sam McGowen said that he thinks the penalty is fair and that administrators in the school east of St. Louis were following policy in the student handbook.

It states: "Displays of affection should not occur on the school campus at any time. It is in poor taste, reflects poor judgment, and brings discredit to the school and to the persons involved."

Coulter said she and her husband told their daughter to go ahead and serve her detentions because the only other option was a day of suspension for each skipped detention.

"We don't agree with it, but I certainly don't want her to get in more trouble," Coulter said.

The couple plan to attend the next school board meeting to ask board members to consider rewording the policy or be more specific in what is considered a display of affection.

"I'm just hoping the school board will open their eyes and just realize that maybe they shouldn't be punishing us for hugs," Megan said.

    </a>
										<div>Chris and I took a red-eye to visit Stephanie and Lang last weekend. Red-eyes SUCK, but it was worth it to maximize our time with them. I knew I missed them lots, but having three solid days to putz around and drink and see Fall in Massachusetts with them…man, what a gift that was. It was much needed.

I appreciate them so much. Chris and I have known them since we started dating in ’98. These two gems are real friends. Stephanie and Lang, I’m raising my coffee mug too you since I don’t have a G &amp; T!

Have I ever mention that I LOVE cemeteries?! We spent the humid and rainy Friday in Salem and visited several graveyards. The rain would drip down the headstones like tears. I’d think about the generations of friends and family who stood under a particular tree saying goodbye to their loved-ones. How many women wore petticoats and corsets? How many men stood out there with top hats and canes…or plaid leisure suits or short black dresses and big shades? The span of history out there is unbelievable. Brilliant orange and yellow leaves blanketed the grass and stones.

We saw a ton of grey squirrels everywhere we walked…mainly in the many cemeteries. Lang loved to psych them out by pretending to have food, then yelling, “BOO!” when they got close. He’d follow that with an eruption of Lang laughter – one of the few laughs that are imprinted in my brain and make me smile just thinking about it.

We ate good food, drank good drinks, saw amazing sites like the building where they read the Declaration of Independence to Bostonians for the first time. I included some amazing pictures of a Holocaust memorial we walked through. Check out my photos if you want to see them. We saw some mafia too! Well, we don’t know that for a fact, but they had BIG cigars! ;)

So, yeah. Massachusetts was amazingly beautiful and such a friendly place and visiting Stephanie and Lang was GREAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!

    </a>
										<div>For as long as I've been able to use the phone, I always knew that I could dial 767-2676 (spells "pop-corn") and find out what time it is...EXACTLY...to the second.

"At the tone, pacific daylight time will be...7...13...and 50 seconds..." *BEEEEEEEP*

"At the tone, pacific daylight time will be 7...14...exactly." *BEEEEEP*

This would go on and on and on.

I just called it to set the clocks in my office and it's been DISCONTINUED! There is no more TIIIIIIIME!! No more POP-CORN! </div>

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/hollycallahan/blog/fc6dee5a-d185-4326-96ae-91587b9862f3">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/695/9ac/6959acf3-d684-4ce5-a786-e42348a75c35.thumb" width="65" height="48" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>I was SO amused this morning to spot a LITTLE winged bug on my windshield (not the one in this picture) holding on for dear life as I drove on the freeway. I was going at least 45 for about 3 or 4 miles before his little scrawney legs and toes couldn't hold on with its suction or WHATEVER bugs do. I wondered what it was thinking. I imagined its thoughts sounded like its voice sounds...very high pitched...just like how a bug's voice should be...

"Holy shit! This suuuuuucks! Aaaaaaaa my gawd, when is that bitch gonna slow down?! Fuck, we're on 580?! I've gotta let gooooo!"

This little winged creature was trembling in the wind, wings flapping, right before my eyes as I sat in the calm, quiet capsule that is my car.

I wondered how if felt to be so tiny with THAT kind of wind hitting its body. Did it sound like Normandy?

Before I knew it, it was gone. The relief of not having to hold on must have been the best feeling EVAR! Like when you are done pumping your third rep of 15 and get to just sit there. What a rush, huh?

So, that's my story of the bug.

The end.
