Are you using LinkedIn? It's another social networking site, but unlike MySpace, Tribe, Friendster, Facebook, etc. It focuses primarily on business networking. I signed up for an account years ago and haven't really used it until recently. When my former employer was bought by their larger rival and I was faced with the potential of getting laid off, I felt that it was time to network professionally.

LinkedIn is set to roll out some new content and functionality that should drive more traffic to the site and make it a more useful tool. They are working on a new API as well. In the last several months I have watched all my trusted contacts increase their own network of contacts so I think the site has some merit... more so than MySpace. If you need to find a job or look for new work, will you wade through the millions of horribly designed MySpace pages or go to a clean layout that is easy to read?

If you're on LinkedIn and you're not in my network yet, please add me. Here is my profile: http://www.linkedin.com/in/iamdel (If you don't have my email to Link to me, use the group association, Burning Man.)

Boulder Burnworks had a sneak preview opening tonight. We invited a few cruisers on a SoBo Ride and ended at the new shop and toasted the soft opening with a few beers. After a bit, a few more people showed up, some with congratulatory Jagermeister, others with offers of contributions to the shop and bike orders. It's going to be awesome. Burnworks goes live in two weeks.

**UPDATE**

Burnworks has been dusted, swept, cleaned, painted and moved in! We have the technology. The MIG needs a canister and some gas and we will be ready to weld some stuff up.

Now taking orders for freaky bikes, playa bikes and whatever you want to make. We will be focusing on swing bikes, comfy playa trikes and a Boulder Eco Cargo Cruiser. What is that you say? We don't know either, but just wait til we build it.

I'm renting an art space!

I'm excited! Some friends and myself are renting a small warehouse in East Boulder to use as an art space for bicycle building, metal sculpture making and throwing parties/art openings. Oh yeah, maybe some fire too!

It will be nice to have a place in an industrial area so we can make noise and not have to worry about annoying the neighbors.

As we develop our space, we plan on selling a few bikes and renting out shop time to offset the rental costs and materials we will need to buy.

Hopefully we will make an announcement soon. Stay tuned!

American Dream: the Theme

So there has been a lot of discussion about next year's theme for Burning Man on ePlaya and Tribe. "It sucks! It's not inclusive to our international friends! It's political! It will attract the Rednecks! The numbers will be even bigger next year!"

Me being a first timer, I had a blast. I did not let the frat boys or the shirt cockers or the jaded, pretentious Burners ruin it for me. What I learned from my week on the Playa is that it is whatever you make/want/dream it to be.

That said...

How will you interpret next year's theme? Will your camp/art embrace the things that honestly make this country an amazing place or will you focus on the negative?

Arlo Guthrie wrote a great song that every Burner should take to heart.

"This land is your land This land is my land
From California to the New York island;
From the red wood forest to the Gulf Stream waters
This land was made for you and Me.

As I was walking that ribbon of highway,
I saw above me that endless skyway:
I saw below me that golden valley:
This land was made for you and me.

I've roamed and rambled and I followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts;
And all around me a voice was sounding:
This land was made for you and me.

When the sun came shining, and I was strolling,
And the wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling,
As the fog was lifting a voice was chanting:
This land was made for you and me.

As I went walking I saw a sign there
And on the sign it said "No Trespassing."
But on the other side it didn't say nothing,
That side was made for you and me.

In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?

Nobody living can ever stop me,
As I go walking that freedom highway;
Nobody living can ever make me turn back
This land was made for you and me. "

***Edit - Whoops, Woodie, not Arlo wrote that. I knew it was some Guthrie guy.***

This cartoon was in the Daily Camera earlier in the month. Whole Foods needed to buy Wild Oats to fight the growing competition from Kroger, Safeway, and Wal Mart.

All the conventional grocery chains are jumping onto the Organic Bandwagon. Margins are notoriously slim in the conventional grocery business, but natural grocers enjoy fat margins because people are willing to spend the money for their (perceived) health benefit.

Is it a good thing? Yes and no. People are becoming more conscious of what they eat and how it is grown. By the conventionals stocking more organic/natural items it is helping people make better choices. Due to their operational efficiencies they can offer these foods at lower prices and force Whole Foods to do the same. Good for the common man and his common paycheck.

On the other hand, there is concern that the conventionals will use their lobbying power to weaken the standards of what is considered "organic". Bad for everyone.

This is a late posting but you can view the Boulder Santacon recap with video and photo gallery at: http://cruiserbikeride.org/santacon

We will be moving to a new address soon:

If you missed the Boulder Santacon, it was a great night of silly fun. Nothing too wild or obnoxious. I actually was a little blue a couple days after the event. It felt like Christmas was over and it was only November.

We have lots of plans for next year so it will be an event not to be missed!
