about me
I wish to write something witty here, something that would amuse you and explicate me, in a humble manner, of course, for one must be humble to be liked, not that I am trying to mask a keen wisdom, because on the hand masks give me face rashes, and on the other hand nothing, just conforming to the sentence’s strictures, one hand, two hand, so exhausting to be humble to be liked, though, so exhausting to do anything to be liked, like writing and speaking, for anything we write and speak already exists inside of us and therefore why share but to be liked, thousands of café chats to be liked, thousands of blogs across the world to be liked—so exhausting.

- Yes.
- Have you published anything?
- No, but--

One disadvantage of reading book reviews daily, or almost daily, with the exception of, say, the reviews at The New York Review of Books, which are less 'book review' and more critical essays, an important distinction, according to Cynthia Ozick, a distinction I endorse because, well, "she's Cynthia Ozick man!," although of course there is more to it than that, none of it all that amusing so I will refrain from including it and instead I will just redirect this sentence back to the disadvanta... read more

- Oh. Do you mind if I put on my smirk? Really quick, ok? There. So what kind of [smirk] fiction do you write?
- Literary. A bit, experimental.
- How cute! My little cousin Bobo is a writer too.

If like me you’re boggled by the persistence of story in American fiction, the same reversals and recognitions and epiphanies on top of a hill overseeing the sea where a burning ship sails away, then read Gary Lutz. The grammarian.

Towards the end of Dr. Atomic, as the detonation nears and most lie flat on the bare dark stage, there's a dance. A few turns and one-two steps, a reproduction of hundreds of cabaret numbers.

The dance irritated me. I tried to think, remembering his Ligeti dance pieces, how Christopher Wheeldom would have choreographed this scene, and yet this distraction, which in restrospect seems futile and typical of workshop mentality, was not what irritated me.

A congruence between subject and me... read more

Friends who jump to judge their friends sadden me, perhaps for the same reason Albee's new play saddened me. In the "Goat, or who is Sylvia?", Martin, a successful architect, falls in love with a goat. Or, to put in more crudely (as his son does), he is fucking a goat. Since this is perceived as an abomination, everyone, including his best friend of decades, abandons him. Only if we live a life that is perceived by others as good, Albee suggests, will our loved ones stand by us. And since wha... read more
