There's this AWESOME-O group in NY that does all kinds of culture jamming and flash mob style stuff. This is one of their latest:

didn't they do the thing at best buy? repetitive skit at starbucks? fake U2 on roof top too? or am i thinking of some other group?

that's them. There was a piece on This American Life about them a few years ago where they found this unknown band, downloaded the album, memorized the whole thing, and then showed up to a Sun night concert at a dive bar as rabid fans screaming and singing along.

That's them, and much more.

I liked their U2 one the best. And their annual No Pants Day of course (which happened for the first time here in SF this year). And seeing them grow from their origins (three friends in a bar pretending them one is Ben Folds from Ben Folds Five) is interesting too.

As someone who may or may not have done some pranks, I actually disagree with some of the stuff they do. Like the Best Buy one. Or the stanger's birthday (also discussed on that "This American Life" episode).

[And the fake band of the fake groupies prank now claim they knew they were being hoaxed the whole time, but saw the whole situation as a win-win PR windfall.]
