</a>
<div>in the office where i work, we receive daily announcements of the successes won by the environmental movement. i have recently been inspired by the current administration to take up writing letters again to elected officials, after a 10 year hiatus. i used to write to representative darlene hooley, rep for corvallis, when i was in college, and she always wrote me back. we talked about kenaf paper and other forest-related issues and solutions.
my last post reminded me that my sense of humor isn't easily accessible to strangers, or even acquaintances, which are basically the same thing, so i'll include the tidbit that the u.s. government counts a letter written and sent via snail (or regular) mail as the equivalent of two thousand citizens who concur with the author of the letter. the government's rationale is that two thousand of us feel the same way or would if we knew about the issue, knew how to compose an informed letter on the issue, or had any idea that writing a letter to an elected official meant something. it may seem like the simplest of things, sticking a self-adhesive stamp on an envelope and writing out the addresses, then walking to the mailbox. but for some reason* for many of us, the mind groans at the idea of such effort. this doesn't even include the composition of the letter, nor the research that must go into it. the internet allows comparatively quick research if one knows where to look. i suggest the websites of the major environmental groups as a start. you can use these to find out about atrocities around the world and begin forming what you would like to say about the issues you care most about. for those addicted to getting lost in minutia instead of acting, such as questioning the motivations of large environmental groups, you can still go further than their sites in your research and formulate your own letter; the point is to say something in writing and send it to an elected official, now, while there are still forests and whales.
having said that, i'm making a case again for writing letters to elected officials; now more than ever the administration in office is receptive, intelligent, and aware. as that fact stands, we bohemians, environmentalists, radicals, artists, etc. have a grand opportunity to let those serving in office know how we want them to handle the issues brought to the fore by greedy, mindless corporate polluters and destroyers. just think of the mega-million-dollar lobbying budgets (think it should be illegal? well there's your first letter!) the car, oil, gas, and logging industry (to name a few) have if you need a reason to get out of bed in the morning and write.
essentially, your voice counts, so please use it this month, year, whatever; just consider the natural resources, the purity of the fresh water supply, the undiscovered medicines, the dying native tribal survival wisdom, the stirring up of natural disasters by crazy resource and ecosystem destruction.
ok, so here is a direct link to finding the addresses of our reps and senators, and mr. obama himself. if you live in another state you can also find your elected officials by starting there.
http://www.congress.org/congressorg/officials/congress/?district=03&amp;lvl=C&amp;azip=97206&amp;state=OR

*oh yeah, urban sprawl and the car insanity problem; but that's another story.</div>

<div>A woman I don't know much about, K__, tells me each time I see her that my boyfriend sure is cute, etc. It feels low-level, unevolved, her dark-handed remarks perhaps a sad casualty of the social training women have received in America. I don't know what to do, being that I don't gravitate towards competition over men or back-stabbing other women. They volunteered together before I met him, so I feel awkward when we're all together.</div>

<div>This is a real Craigslist ad......... READ IT!
Tooooo funny :)

NINJA HAULER: 2005 Nissan Xterra - $12900 (Ronan / Lake County)

Reply to: sale-926508578@craigslist.org [?]
Date: 2008-11-19, 10:04PM MST

OK, let me start off by saying this Xterra is only available for purchase by the manliest of men (or women). My friend, if it was possible for a vehicle to sprout chest hair and a five o'clock shadow, this Nissan would look like Tom Selleck. It is just that manly.

It was never intended to drive to the mall so you can pick up that adorable shirt at Abercrombie &amp; Fitch that you had your eye on. It wasn't meant to transport you to yoga class or Linens &amp; Things. No, that's what your Prius is for. If that's the kind of car you're looking for, then just do us all a favor and stop reading right now. I mean it. Just stop.

This car was engineered by 3rd degree ninja super-warriors in the highest mountains of Japan to serve the needs of the man that cheats death on a daily basis. They didn't even consider superfluous nancy boy amenities like navigation systems (real men don't get lost), heated leather seats (a real man doesn't let anything warm his butt), or On Star (real men don't even know what the hell On Star is).

No, this brute comes with the things us testosterone-fueled super action junkies need. It has a 265 HP engine to outrun the cops. It's got special blood/gore resistant upholstery. It even has a first-aid kit in the back. You know what the first aid kit has in it? A pint of whiskey, a stitch-your-own-wound kit and a hunk of leather to bite down on when you're operating on yourself. The Xterra also has an automatic transmission so if you're being chased by Libyan terrorists, you'll still be able to shoot your machine gun out the window and drive at the same time. It's saved my bacon more than once.

It has room for you and the four hotties you picked up on the way to the gym to blast your pecs and hammer your glutes. There's a tow hitch to pull your 50 caliber anti-Taliban, self cooling machine gun. I also just put in a new windshield to replace the one that got shot out by The Man.

My price on this bad boy is an incredibly low $12,900, but I'll entertain reasonable offers. And by reasonable, I mean don't walk up and tell me you'll give me $5,000 for it. That's liable to earn you a Burmese-roundhouse-sphincter-kick with a follow up three fingered eye-jab. Would it hurt? Hell yeah. Let's just say you won't be the prettiest guy at the Coldplay concert anymore.

There's only 69,000 miles on this four-wheeled hellcat from Planet Kickass. Trust me, it will outlive you and the offspring that will carry your name. It will live on as a monument to your machismo.

Now, go look in the mirror and tell me what you see. If it's a rugged, no holds barred, super brute he-man macho Chuck Norris stunt double, then contact me. I might be out hang-gliding or BASE jumping or just chilling with my ladies, but I'll get back to you. And when I do, we'll talk about a price over a nice glass of Schmidt while we listen to Johnny Cash.

To sweeten the deal a little, I'm throwing in this pair of MC Hammer pants for the man with rippling quads that can't fit into regular pants. Yeah, you heard me. FREE MC Hammer pants.

Rock on.

    </a>
										<div>Hello Jadene,

My name is Ken Gressman and I am writing you from Detroit, Michigan. About a
year and a half ago, I found the Waldo Point Web Site, while doing some
personal research for my own information on the Houseboat Community of the
1960’s and 70’s in Sausalito California. As a kid growing up in the 70’s, form
the Great Lake state, I had heard about the Houseboat Community. Coming form a
background of old wooden boat enthusiasts, I was completely taken in by the
web site. My grandfather had several old Chris Craft boats when I was a kid. I
spent countless hours with him on the boats until he passed away in the early
1970’s. My old boat appreciation has never left me, but it has been suppressed
all of these years until I found the web site on Waldo Point. As I sat in my
studio and looked at the site, all the pictures of the people, with their
weathered and gristled smiles, living in the freedom to be………..I imagined what
it must have been like to live there. I bet it wasn’t always easy, but there
is a lot to be said to being able to live and create on one’s own terms. I
found myself feeling a sense of sadness, that time has changed so many things
in our society, but I thought, wow, these wonderful people still have a sense
of family, community, and love after all these years. What a beautiful tribe.
A few months went by and I was traveling in Northern New Mexico meeting
artists, Native Americans, and free thinkers, just all kinds of wonderful
people and Waldo Point was still on my mind. I sent a letter to Saul Rouda and
he sent me one of his DVDs, (Last Free Ride), and again it just blew me away.
All of the people and personalities, the sense of community and overall
kindness. Saul’s voice was almost playful as he interviewed his friends. There
is a real sweetness to the film. Very enjoyable. Then I switched to the second
part of the film called Waldo Point and Saul is talking with Joe Tate and the
rest of his friends and he starts to interview a guy on his boat who’s name is
Adam. As I sat and watched the film with friends, Saul was asking Adam how he
built his boat, Adam was telling him and he picked up his guitar and started
to sing. I was so enamored with the beauty, gentleness, and caring that was
coming across my TV screen, the wonderful heart felt music that Adam was
laying down, I started to weep. I think since 9-11 and all this terrorism
stuff and just the overall temperament of our society in recent years….it’s
been hard to live with. Looking at Adam and his music the freedom and his
playfulness really just took everyone in the room and knocked us out. He was
really the beauty in the whole film. Adams energy really put things back into
perspective for me and some of my friends. What a beautiful man ….what a
beautiful time. I read on the site that you were born there in a houseboat, so
you have the gift of having been there too. Your lineage is rich. I don’t know
if you are related to Adam or know him, or even if he is still around? I was
hoping to see his email address on the site but I didn’t and I understand that
people often want their space and privacy. I wanted to write Adam to thank him
for enriching the lives of a room full of people form another part of the
country with his talent and beautiful energy from a long time ago. My
girlfriend is a welder and sculptor and I have been a craftsman all of my
life. We are planning on building a houseboat ( about 24ft) with a few
friends, in the spirit of the Sausalito Houseboat Community of the 1960’s.
More like paying homage or honoring the freedom that once was so prevalent and
abundant as a way of saying, “thank you” for helping to enrich the dreams of
others. In the film Adam talks about being a woodcarver and artist, if any of
his carvings or art exist, we would love to purchase one for our houseboat as
a totem or a blessing for the boat. We would be eternally grateful and
honored. If any of his songs exists on CD or tape, they would be a huge source
of inspiration for our project and our lives. Even way out here in the
Midwest, some thirty five plus years later, some of us get it……….and are
grateful.

I hope this letter finds you well, happy, and peaceful. Feel free to write any
time.

                                                    Sincerely,

                                                       Ken Gressman

    </a>
<div>i had to share some of these, as they are outrageously backwards. 'one well-known mogul favors shabby chic cashmere sweaters but doesn't have the patience to let them get slightly worn at the elbows, so he employs a man to wear them around for him first.' 'anyone with household help knows that, unfortunately, staff are people too.' 'never waste time even opening a book. be like the high-flying producer who summons writers and thinkers to his office to give him highlights of their work.' 'one british filmmaker keeps a closetful of gift baskets to dispatch the moment he hears about a friend's new baby or award. these baskets contain cashmere throws and other generic treasures, along with presigned cards.'
ah, to be rich...and miss the point entirely..

    </a>
<div>I am thinking it's a sign that the freckles
in our eyes are mirror images and when
we kiss they're perfectly aligned
and I have to speculate that God himself
did make us into corresponding shapes like
puzzle pieces from the clay
and true, it may seem like a stretch, but
its thoughts like this that catch my troubled
head when you're away when I am missing you to death
when you are out there on the road for
several weeks of shows and when you scan
the radio, I hope this song will guide you home

they will see us waving from such great
heights, "come down now," they'll say
but everything looks perfect from far away,
"come down now," but we'll stay...

I tried my best to leave this song on your
machine but the persistent beat it sounded
thin upon listening and
that frankly will not fly. you will hear
the shrillest highs and lowest lows with
the windows down when this is guiding you home

they will see us waving from such great
heights, "come down now," they'll say
but everything looks perfect from far away,
"come down now," but we'll stay...

<div>But lately when I hit the street
It's hum-de-dum
When the hard times hit
They hit the biz

The hardest hit make the best of it

Strong dollar stockbroker right to the bottom
Sink down with your boomtown High water realtors arrive
With numbers over their eyes
Stopwatch hearts

Good God I love the party-starved
Businessmen with stopwatch hearts

They don't beat
[They tick]

'Round that corner
Down the street
There's a dive where working girls retreat
From their hum-de-dum
So tilt that felt hat to the side

Gonna get me one
Gonna get me one
[And get it every night]

<div>My Permaculture and Landscape Design business just received the Portland-based Ecological Business Certification! It was a lengthy application and review process, with stringent certification requirements, and now Eco-Logic (www.ecologiclandscape.com) is Eco-Biz (http://www.ecobiz.org/) Certified!
Note: Listing on the Eco-Biz site will take a bit, but I'm not sure how long. Also my moms is having computer troubles, so the renovations to my own website are stalled for now, but I'm looking forward to that happening sometime in the next several months.

    </a>
<div>and now..in addition to walnuts warning that they may have been processed on machines that process tree nuts..here are some more actual label instructions on consumer products (no offense to those allergic to tree nuts - i get the rationale for that one):

1. On a blanket from Taiwan -
NOT TO BE USED AS PROTECTION FROM A TORNADO.

2. On a helmet mounted mirror used by US cyclists -
REMEMBER, OBJECTS IN THE MIRROR ARE ACTUALLY BEHIND YOU.

3. On a Taiwanese shampoo -
USE REPEATEDLY FOR SEVERE DAMAGE.

4. On the bottle-top of a (UK) flavoured milk drink -
AFTER OPENING, KEEP UPRIGHT.

5. On a New Zealand insect spray -
THIS PRODUCT NOT TESTED ON ANIMALS.

6. In a US guide to setting up a new computer -
TO AVOID CONDENSATION FORMING, ALLOW THE BOXES TO WARM UP TO ROOM TEMPERATURE BEFORE OPENING.
(Sensible, but the instruction was INSIDE the box)

7. On a Japanese product used to relieve painful hemorrhoids -
LIE DOWN ON BED AND INSERT POSCOOL SLOWLY UP TO THE PROJECTED PORTION LIKE A SWORD-GUARD INTO ANAL DUCT. WHILE INSERTING POSCOOL FOR APPROXIMATELY 5 MINUTES, KEEP QUIET.

8. In some countries, on the bottom of Coke bottles -
OPEN OTHER END.

9. On a packet of Sunmaid raisins -
WHY NOT TRY TOSSING OVER YOUR FAVOURITE BREAKFAST CEREAL?

10. On a Sears hairdryer -
DO NOT USE WHILE SLEEPING.

11. On a bag of Fritos -
YOU COULD BE A WINNER! NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. DETAILS INSIDE.
(The shoplifter special!)

12. On a bar of Dial soap -
DIRECTIONS - USE LIKE REGULAR SOAP.
(And that would be how?)

13. On Tesco's Tiramisu dessert (printed on bottom of the box) -
DO NOT TURN UPSIDE DOWN.
(Too late! You lose!)

14. On Marks and Spencer Bread Pudding -
PRODUCT WILL BE HOT AFTER HEATING.
(Are you sure? Let's experiment)

15. On a Korean kitchen knife -
WARNING: KEEP OUT OF CHILDREN.
(Dammit! Who are they to tell me what to do with my kids?)

16. On a string of Chinese-made Christmas lights -
FOR INDOOR OR OUTDOOR USE ONLY.
(As opposed to use in outer space?)

17. On a Japanese food processor -
NOT TO BE USED FOR THE OTHER USE.
(Now I'm curious.)

18. On Sainsbury's peanuts -
WARNING - CONTAINS NUTS.
(Really?)

19. On an American Airlines packet of nuts -
INSTRUCTIONS - OPEN PACKET, EAT NUTS.
(I'm glad they cleared that up)

20. On a Swedish chainsaw -
DO NOT ATTEMPT TO STOP CHAIN WITH YOUR HANDS OR GENITALS.
(What kind of consumer phone-call led to this warning?)

21. On a child's superman costume -
WEARING OF THIS GARMENT DOES NOT ENABLE YOU TO FLY.
(That's right, destroy a universal childhood fantasy!)

22. On some frozen dinners -
SERVING SUGGESTION: DEFROST.

23. On a hotel provided shower cap in a box -
FITS ONE HEAD.

24. On packaging for a Rowenta iron -
DO NOT IRON CLOTHES ON BODY.

25. On Boot's "Children's" cough medicine -
DO NOT DRIVE CAR OR OPERATE MACHINERY.

26. On Nightly sleep aid -
WARNING: MAY CAUSE DROWSINESS.
(Duh!)

<div>it was a hellish 27 or so hours. nia and i met david for 'deep house' at crush yesterday. mckenzie and ryan joined us for a while before heading to shawn's zoo bomb gig. :) about 2:30 this morning we stopped at my house for a quick change and got to the meeting place in northeast around four a.m.. various romero films were being shown on a huge screen to a living room full of the soon to be undead. to stay awake, i stepped down into the basement to help the make up artists (mua's) and was able to get nia in for some of the more intensive latex decorations as well as being selected myself for a concoction of knoxx gelatin. the group hit downtown and commenced filming around 7 a.m.. as we wandered in the gorgeous morning sunlight, the cameramen and filmmaker chose several distinct scenarios for the thirty or so of us to act out, from being stuck inside a glass elevator to fighting over human entrails in front of a macdonald's 'restaurant.' my mask hardened into a shellac not unlike the horse hooves from which it is made and quickly began to pull painfully at my neck, so i started peeling it off. by the last shoot one of the cameramen was able to snip the neck section entirely off to relieve some of my pain. when we got back to my house, david retired and a perhaps even more painful removal superceded any other activity for nia and i, leaving bright red complexions. i got some awesome shots of nia's mangled neck after she retouched it a bit before yelping herself from the bathroom until hers too was a pile of independent eww. of all things she and i went to the nearest mall afterwards and ate yummy asian food before finally passing out in sleeping bags outside my front door to the chirping of early spring birds and lawn mowers. i will post links to the completed competition entry soon. good times.</div>

<div>wednesday night, yes valentine's day, i got sick with some sort of achey coughey thing. i stayed in all of yesterday except for watching a bit of the sunset, which was peach. i ate all manner of herbs and only broke down around midnight to eat ice cream and ganache torte of all things. i know it was busted of me, but i just couldn't stand all that health food after 24 hours. i watched all two hours of some t.v. drama about newlyweds in a vegas casino starring tom selleck and then some strange videos about crop circles that someone sent to me. miraculously, i feel well today. i guess hippie parents aren't totally wack after all. this means i am still going to crash-the-romero-movie-zombie-a-thon tomorrow morning at 4. my plans have been to bring at least two friends along, so i am thankful to be feeling up to it again so fast. yay! </div>

At Least I Have a Rack, Little Miss Mosquito-Bites

Teacher, guiding field trip: Don't you look cute today, April?! I love your dress. I wish I could wear one like it.
Kindergarten girl: Maybe if you lost some weight, you could.

Little Lizzy Borden Was Always a Helpful Sort

Stressed manny watching three kids: Ugh! [Under his breath] I'm gonna kill myself...
Little girl: Here's a knife [cheerily hands him a butter knife].

Does Penney's Even Carry Rubber?

Mom, looking at bedding: Oooh, this one is nice.
Daughter: Mom, I'm getting married. I want to have sex. Lots of it. Hot, steamy, nasty, married-people sex. I just don't think I can do that on pastels.

Our Bad

Girl #1: So, we have a bet -- if I have sex first, then I have to wear a shirt that she's written all over, but if she-- [looks around].
Girl #2: If she what?
Girl #1: ... I'll tell you later. I feel like people are listening, and I don't want to end up on some website.

<div>i think i just saw proof that my cat loves me. i got home and he was bein' all attention-huffing as usual. everytime he comes back in from outside it's the lie down so jadene can pet me routine, a rather needy affair on his part. today when he did it, it was i who'd just come in, and since i've been in rather altered states of late i guess i must have seen him from a new perspective. well, anyway, he was giving me love i realized. good ol' purr-tastic affection in the form of the lie down so jadene can pet me routine. i think he was doing this this time so that i could feel comforted.
any thoughts on this?</div>
