California Supreme Court Overturns Gay Marriage Ban By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Published: May 15, 2008 Filed at 1:05 p.m. ET SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The California Supreme Court has overturned a ban on gay marriage, paving the way for California to become the second state where gay and lesbian residents can marry. The justices released the 4-3 decision Thursday, saying that domestic partnerships are not a good enough substitute for marriage in an opinion written by Chief Justice Ron George. The cases were brought by the city of San Francisco, two dozen gay and lesbian couples, Equality California and another gay rights group in March 2004 after the court halted San Francisco's monthlong same-sex wedding march that took place at Mayor Gavin Newsom's direction. And a clip from the opinion: As past cases establish, the substantive right of two adults who share a loving relationship to join together to establish an officially recognized family of their own — and, if the couple chooses, to raise children within that family — constitutes a vitally important attribute of the fundamental interest in liberty and personal autonomy that the California Constitution secures to all persons for the benefit of both the individual and society.

UPDATE: pics at http://www.flickr.com/photos/focalintent/ Somebody set The Man on fire last night (around the lunar eclipse time). Apparently the Man still stands, but is damaged (as is the pavilion). from burningman.com: At approximately 2:58 local time, 8/28/07, a fire ignited the Burning Man figure and the center Green Man Pavilion at the Burning Man event in Black Rock City, Nevada. Black Rock City Emergency Services Department units responded from Stations Three, Five, and Nine and put the fire out within approximately 23 minutes. There were no reported injuries. The Man is still standing, and an assesment is underway to determine the structural integrity of The Man and the Green Man Pavillion. The event will continue as scheduled. An arson investigation is currently under way, and is ongoing. There is no confirmed cause of ignition at this time. No further information is available at this time. More information will be released tomorrow morning after the investigation can safely be concluded.

which means up jetlagged and up way too early (local time is 5:40am) here in Yokohama, Japan, about 30 minutes south of central Tokyo. I have an amazing view from my room on the 58th floor of the Landmark Tower here - Yokohama is part of the greater Tokyo super-duper-metropolis so the city stretches out to the horizon. bring on the sushi!

Starting one's day with a bang

Yikes! I was rear-ended in rush hour traffic this morning by a motorcyclist who in turn had been hit by another car that was changing lanes. I didn't even see him coming, just heard/felt a bang / thud as he hit my rear bumper and then ended up on the pavement. Most importantly the rider's OK although bruised and scraped. Bike was looking not so good. Looks like my car just has bumper damage (that's what they're for). The CHP was busy hassling out whether the rider or the other driver were at fault when they cut me loose. OK, I'm ready for the rest of the day to be quiet and calm :-).

"Transit agencies are scrambling to enhance service and find alternative routes around the collapsed section of the massive East Bay freeway interchange known as the MacArthur Maze. A tanker truck explosion caused the connector to Interstate 580 from the Bay Bridge to collapse onto the roadway connecting I-80 to I-880 and downtown Oakland. One piece has completely fallen down and another piece is hanging loosely and may fall today, Caltrans workers said. "
