Outernational Science celebrates creative musical influences from around the globe with resident Djs Cheb i SABBAH and Janaka Selekta plus resident live performers Riffat Sultana & Party.
This month features very special guests Fanna-Fi-Alla.
Fannah-Fi-Allah has been awing audiences with their flawless presentation of traditional Qawwali-Sufi music in as such far off places such as India, Pakistan, and all over the United States since 2001. Qawwali is the venue in which traditional Sufi poets and mystics from around the world use to express the fire of divine love (Ishq) through music at ancient gatherings in Persian and Asian countries dating back for over a thousand years. Fannah-Fi-Allah and their members, through their dedicated devotion and love of the Sufi religion and Qawwali music, have come to break many new boundaries by being the first classically trained western Qawwali group to be asked to play in tombs, shrines, and places of Sufi elders around the world as well as possessing the first female tabla player to be asked and allowed to play at these sacred events and places.
Resident dj Cheb i Sabbah has been enchanting audiences around the world with his sublime mix of Asian and Indian stylings that hold a firm root in both the rythym and movement. Cheb i Sabbah’s devotion and celebration of world music and culture highlights the talents of a man who has been in a multi-decade love affair with music and people from all over the world. His sound has been pivotal in supporting the roots and traditions of many outernational sounds over the years including Bhangra, Asian, Arabic, and African Electronica. This will be his only regular monthly event starting September 12th, 2008. Don’t miss the opportunity to come and imbibe in the stylings of a musical master!
Resident DJ Janaka Selekta has a long history at Club Six. where his monthly event Dhamaal, ran for five years, winning the Guardian's “Best of the Bay” two years in a row for “Best Nightclub” and "Best Electronic Act," while also receiving audience choice for "Best DJ." With a solo album soon to be released, Janaka Selekta joins forces with Cheb i Sabbah to provide a powerful showcase of world music that has two floors of global grooves that is sure to delight and captivate music audiences far and wide!
Riffat & Party brings with her the lineage and study of traditional Pakistani Sufi music that has been in her family for the last 500 years. Riffat & Party hold with in their midst a collection of devoted and talented musicians that have upheld the legacy and beauty of Classical Pakistani music while seamlessly mixing it with both western and middle eastern styles and influences.
