Jhada has that beautiful Asesu quality of being eminently decent and at the same time possessed of a vicious wit. I've never laid eyes on her but I love her dearly.

about me
"How bleak was my puberty."

Someday I hope to grow up to be Auntie Mame.

I am now a published author. My first book, It Never Ends, is now available in paperback on amazon.com, amazon.co.uk, barnesandnoble.com.

Sometimes I live within the lines, sometimes outside. It all depends on what I feel most comfortable with. I try earnestly to be true to myself, and those around me. Any respectful question asked will be answered as honestly as possible. I love the ocean, the full moon, chilly nights smoking a cigar on the stoop, slow and rhythmic music and people who are utter dorks. Being one myself, I tend to appreciate that kind of thing.

Spotted this over on

[info]shlomarosenberg 's LJ. From BBC News:

The prosecutor in a child rape case which has sparked outrage in Australia has been stood aside pending an investigation into his actions.

Steve Carter did not seek prison sentences for nine indigenous males who admitted the gang rape of a 10-year-old Aboriginal girl in Northern Queensland.

The female judge in the case let the men walk free after saying the girl had probably given her consent.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has said he is appalled by the case.

When news emerged that the self-confessed rapists had been allowed to walk free, Judge Sarah Bradley was vilified for her comment that the girl had probably agreed to have sex with them all.

Emphasis is mine.

An article over at Pushing Rope that has some pretty horrifying and dismaying details.

The doctor wasn't sure if he could find Jones's rape kit because he has "no idea which rape victum [sic] you are because so many young contractor girls were raped after drinking with the guys."

The Jamie Leigh Foundation website

The Jamie Leigh Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping United States citizens and legal residents who are victims of sexual harassment, rape and sexual abuse while working abroad for federal contractors, corporations, or government entities. We believe that overseas contractors and corporations should act responsibly, and be held accountable to provide safe housing and a work environment free of sexual harassment, and limit the potential for abuse. We believe that United States civilians who perpetrate crime while working in foreign countries should be held accountable for their actions. The Jamie Leigh foundation will assist victims through advocacy, education, referral and providing support. We work toward the day that no person shall face sexual abuse and harassment, and all persons, regardless of gender, will be able to work without fear, consternation, and safety concerns.

Jamie's diary of events.

And hey - unsurprisingly, similar things have happened to other women within the 'green zone' as well.

...for anyone who knows any woman who has worked in the green zone, either under the protection of the Department of State, or as a contractor, it is not at all surprising.

I personally know three young women who have worked in this environment - not even including my sister, who has experienced it as well. The stories they have told me of conditions for females in the green zone are disturbing at best. There are universal similarities in what they describe: a dominant boy's club atmosphere; a fraternity but with guns and more men desperate for an outlet; so few women and many of them young, attractive, and unattached; flimsy locks on their quarters; and in many circumstances local nationals walking unescorted (but don't you dare complain to the embassy, we all know what happens then).

Here's the truth, according to my friends: women who are working in the green zone, even non-contractors, are particularly careful to never walk anywhere alone. Not because they are worried about being bombed or attacked by the enemy: they are worried about the men who are there. Men who are supposed to be their fellow comrades and friends, who are supposed to treat them with respect, but instead are ever-present threats. So try for a moment to understand that not everything in Iraq is flowers and candy, and that sometimes American men do terrible things, and American companies let people slip through the cracks. "We make men without chests, and expect virtue and enterprise..." it would not be the first time, nor the last.

And for the sake of balance, a counter-point. Of sorts...

Jones, Et Al v. Halliburton Company et al - online reviewable documents for the court case.

The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee asked the Justice Department on Tuesday (12/11) to give a full account of its investigation into the alleged rape of a female contract worker in Iraq two years ago.

Have any of you had to provide daily 'in-home' care for a parent? If so, do you know what organizations/business are trustworthy and respectable in providing this care? What do they usually charge?

From ABC news: Jamie Leigh Jones, now 22, says that after she was raped by multiple men at a KBR camp in the Green Zone, the company put her under guard in a shipping container with a bed and warned her that if she left Iraq for medical treatment, she'd be out of a job.

"Don't plan on working back in Iraq. There won't be a position here, and there won't be a position in Houston," Jones says she was told.

In a lawsuit filed in federal court against Halliburton and its then-subsidiary KBR, Jones says she was held in the shipping container for at least 24 hours without food or water by KBR, which posted armed security guards outside her door, who would not let her leave.

[...]

Jones told ABCNews.com that an examination by Army doctors showed she had been raped "both vaginally and anally," but that the rape kit disappeared after it was handed over to KBR security officers.

Disgust isn't a powerful enough word. Truly.

Jesus' General speaks out on this.

Wow. I truly don’t have the words to express how utterly OUTRAGED I would be if this ever happened to me. That poor woman.

My god. Should I even bother trying to meet a guy anymore? Christ. This kind of shit truly terrifies me. To place myself in the position of utter trust and utter helplessness only to be completely betrayed in such a way. Gah. The total unadulterated negative headfuckery.

I hope that ‘Enis’ dies in a fucking fire. Fuck him and his 'friends and family' that are trying to guilt-trip her into accepting his apology. If the prick 'didn't mean to hurt her' then why did he ignore her cries of pain - her cries for him to stop? SHE. SAID. NO.

What a cunt.
