If you think Jim Boz is fun to watch dance - take one of his workshops! I had the privilege of attending one on Saturday, October 20, 2007, in Fair Oaks, CA. He is a master at presenting information that makes the experience delightfully memorable and entertaining! It is without a doubt the best workshop I have ever experienced! Thank you Jim and thank you Mina for bringing him to Northern California!

I was fortunate enough see Jim perform and take his workshop in Denver, Colorado last weekend.

Having studied with Egyptian masters such as Mahmoud Reda, Farida Fahmy, Momo Kadous and Raqia Hassan, I recognized such influences in Jim's dancing and choreography. He has a fantastic sense of the dance and the music. Very internal and elegant yet powerful. Besides he has a great sense of humor and makes learning fun!

Study with him whereever and whenever you get the chance!

I am so Haaapppyyyy to be a male bellydancer. I started bellydancing 10 years ago, But John Compton and Jim Boz inspired me to be the best and to be a good dancer. My brother laught because I had "got Hip" bumper sticker on my car. I was in a car wreck 3 years ago, and Broke my Pelvis in half and broke my femur... So now I walk with a limp. My best friend said to me that I became a better dancer after I wrecked my truck... I don't suggest everyone to wreck their car, to be better dancer... Bad Idea!!! LOL :ob Bellydancing to me is the dance of life! I do thank althoughs who taugh me this great gift and to be in the biggest family ever, like the one that we are in... Because if you are a dancer you are like family... Thanks again Jim and John for inspiring and teaching me the greatest gift ever.... Roy or Roland the lost...

Thurs Jan 24 - 7-9pm
Raks Sharki for the Estrogen Challenged
Originally created specifically for guys interested in learning Raks Sharki, this workshop will focus on techniques and approaches to help men, or those teaching men, to be able to study, absorb, practice and perform the fine art. All are welcome. Insights will be applicable to really anyone wanting to adjust materials for applications to their own dance style and personality...but shhhhhhh. We'll still let the guys think it's all about them. ;)
($30Adv/$35 Door)

Friday Jan 25 - All Day
Private Lessons Available
($50/hour; $40/hour for workshop attendees; $30/hour for Certification Applicants)

Saturday Jan 26
10:00am-1:00pm - Drills, Hip Articulations & Isolations
Git yo shimmy on the Jim Boz way! Featuring material in the new Drills, Chills & Thrills 2.0, we have some exciting new drills sure to twist your mind, and get your hips working the way you want. We'll highlight a few combos that will work within drum solos, accents, and anyplace you want to add that precision and sass!
($45)

2:00pm-3:30pm - Level 1 Rhythms, Applications & Expressions
Yeah, Y'all have Gabby. So you don't need me to teach you rhythms. And you know where they fit, yup. From a dancer's perspective, we'll work within the Level 1 and Level 2 rhythms (and Level 3 because I know you are all up on 'em!), what genres they tend to apply to, and how to move within each. You know we like to get all into our feelings - we will cover emotional aspects of syncopation (what the @(#$*?!?!?) and that wonderful technique of ignoring the beat!
($30)

3:30pm-6:30pm - Vocabularies, Combos, Texture Sequencing & Morphing
More Texture Sequencing and Morphing - this time we'll sequence and morph to peppy rhythms. GREAT Concepts for those working restaurants, those interested in embellishing their improvisations and those who need that extra little bit of inspiration when working on choreographies. We'll define some common language, create some combinations, and work within our morphing pattern. Since these workshops are small, if we have some of your prodigys, we will get involved into some exciting concepts! Yeah!
($45)

Or All 3 Saturday Workshops for $115!

Sunday, January 27

10:00am-1:00pm – Combinations, Expressions and Modulations in Baladi
Ooooh...one of my favorites! You had a few of the techniques in last year's Master Class, we'll explore those concepts further. If you have no experience with Baladi, this is your chance! We will cover some Maqam theory (I'm a musician, afterall) and how it relates to us as dancers. Yes, we will probably work with the same piece we did last time, which will be an excellent opportunity to apply previous concepts while exploring new movements, textures and theories! Make your live musicians happy by dancing to their music!
($45)

2:00pm -3:30pm – Finger Cymbal Tonal Techniques, Drills, Melody
These Aint' Yo Momma's Finger Cymbal Patterns!
Okay, we'll start off with finger cymbal 101 for about 20minutes, then we'll start messing with your head by taking everything you know and adding another layer on top of it. Then we'll expand that into the realm of tonality and melody! yum yum Yum! Finish off with a finger cymbal JAM. Bring your Tylenol, because you don't want to miss a beat! And EXCELLENT Set of finger cymbals is required for this workshop. Large playing area and excellent action is necessary.
($30)

3:30pm-6:30pm – Adv Combinations and Musical Connections Overiew
You know you love my sound effects. Advanced Combinations - the ones you won't want to be chewing gum and trying. And beyond that, we'll consider the emotional aspects and how they fit into your dance style and personality. This will be a fast paced combinations class - we will NOT be covering basic technique (hoping that you've either had that with me previously, or during this weekend).
($45)

Or All 3 Sunday Workshops for $115!

OR - all 6 Saturday & Sunday workshops for $215

Informal Belly Dance workshops with Jim Boz in San Diego, CA

Sunday Feb 17:
11:30-1:30 - Level 1 & 2 Rhythms and applications - Musical info EVERY Dancer should know!
Nope, not a drum technique class. We will practice discerning and vocalizing rhythmic patterns in Oriental music, then discuss applications, motion and modulations within the music. Music used will include practice music on one of Jim's upcoming CD releases, so come on down and check it out. Yup, believe it or not, Jim is trained in Classical and Jazz theory and is currently recording his own music! Houston got a taste of the industrio-techno drum solo remix (with sassy silliness, of course).
$20 for members of the JBSD/$25 otherwise

2:00 -3:00 - Finger Cymbal Technique, Drill & Jam
This is not a 'how to play finger cymbals' class. We will begin with that, spending about 15 minutes on basics if anyone needs it. Then we will pick up the pace to hopefully breakneck speed with a finger cymbal version of the hippie drum circle! Check it out! This is miles beyond patterns, we explore tonalities and skillsets that not only will stop your audience from reaching for that icepick, they won't even think about it! An EXCELLENT set of finger cymbals is required, Tylenol is optional.
$10 for members of the JBSD/$15 otherwise

Both workshops held at:

JimBozSchoolOfDance - Summer Session Specialties! ( community » other ) Greetings Middle Eastern Dance Fans!
I’m here at the airport en route to Cairo – Oh my!

Update: Our June/July class schedules will change slightly due to the months of April, May & June spent studying. This is temporary and we will go back to our usual schedule for Fall.

Tuesdays 6:30pm – Foundations in Egyptian Dance – Focusing on specifically Egyptian stylings, we will consider some of the more common movement textures with an eye on proper muscle control, foundations and expression using modulations.

Tuesdays 7:45pm – “What I learned on my Summer Break” – A hands on expression of the material I’ve been getting, from characteristic stylings of Egyptian dancers, to cultural information and much much more. Unlock the world of authentic Raqs Sharqi!

Wednesdays 7:15pm for a TWO Hour Class – “Improvisational Techniques in Egyptian Dance” – From movement textures, to modulations through music theory, rhythm knowledge and unlocking that improvisational experiential spark that MAKES this dance what it is. No choreography, no telling you what to do, but how to express the music in Egyptian style! This is unlike any other class you’ve ever had – and enjoy the benefits of having a musician AND a dancer train you to find the spirit of the dance!

Got a question? I’ll be out of the country!

Used Men's Belly Dance Costume ( for sale » other ) Used Men's Belly Dance Costume

Custom made blue/gold with holographic sequins, ABCrystals.
Shiny blue fabric with depth in the sheen, catches the light. Gold lining.

Includes belt & vest.

This is definitely a used costume and needs some repair on the fringe. It was originally custom made in Turkey. The buckle was made & attached after the initial construction by a local San Diego costume designer. He also added extra AB Crystals to the belt & vest.

The fringe has come undone and apparently a few strands lost during storage. If I can find them, I'll include them. If not, it can be easily repaired by taking some of the fringe from one of the ends. I may have some fringe that would go with it as another layer. I can include it in the shipment or will ship at my own expense.

The vest fit me well when I was about 210lbs. I'm 6'2". I'm currently a bit bigger and have a 47" chest and the vest is a bit too tight for me. The shoulders measured across the back are 20" wide. The arm openings have approximately a 24" circumference. The back length is 20"

The belt is adjusted to fit a 40" waist. It can easily be adjusted to fit +/- 2" (that's for a 38-42" waist approximately - could be more versatile, I'm not a seamstress ;) The belt is 2" thin on its thinnest (front) and 4" thick in the back. It attaches with 2 big hooks and a big snap.

Combine these with your favorite jazz or harem pants!

AS IS $300 (includes shipping and insurance to the continental US - call or email for other shipping options)

No refunds or warranties - I'm spending the income from this on new costumes in Cairo.

Jim Boz Signature Finger Cymbals - Pre-Release Sales - Shipping 11/20/07! ( for sale » musical instruments ) The Jim Boz Signature Professional Finger Cymbals

Three Bronze -- One German Silver -- Tonality -- Variation -- And Incredible Artwork!

It's the difference that Jim Boz and Harry Saroyan bring you - the ultimate in statement in Tone, Texture and Presentation!

Coupling decades of experience by Master Craftsman Harry Saroyan with the dance and music experience of Jim Boz, these cymbals represent over 3 years of painstaking research, design, testing and production.

With a background in music theory, sound design and studio engineering, Jim's approach to the use of finger cymbals in Middle Eastern dance performance focuses on musicality and tonal variations within rhythmic patterning. After experimenting with a variety of products available, Jim turned to Harry Saroyan to meet his needs in tonality, action and design in custom finger cymbals.

Harry Saroyan's contributions to the Middle Eastern arts has made him one of the most influential men in the Belly Dance world. A master craftsman and a recording artist, he brings the dancers the ultimate in sound and selection with his exquisite line of finger cymbals and memorable recordings. Saroyan Mastercrafts is in its fourth decade of providing the finest dance accessories and Finger Cymbals available.

The "Flaming Scarab" artwork motif was designed by Skellramics. Since 1990, Skellramics has been producing an unending chain of innovative and adventurous ceramics with a high level of craftsmanship and an off-kilter sense of humor.

The set is not your typical choice in metals. The Jim Boz Signature finger cymbals are 3 Bronze and one German Silver intentionally. The set is ONLY offered in this combination.

Playing a different set of cymbals in each hand offers a tonal variation within rhythmic patterns. This set is designed so that the German Silver cymbal is played on the tthumb of the dominant hand, the “dum” hand. The slight dissonance created on this hand can be controlled by using the 1st & 3rd fingers gently muting or releasing the cymbal attached to the finger.

This special price is the Pre-Sales price. This set of finger cymbals includes 3/4" elastic, informational insert and a special custom designed finger cymbal pouch. This pre-sales offer will ship your cymbals, the elastic and the inserts -- with the pouch to follow in approximately 6 weeks.

These Cymbals, although made by Harry Saroyan, are available NOW on a re-release sale of $55 via www.JimBozSignatureFingerCymbals.com posted Mon, November 12, 2007 - 12:51 PM
Personal Invite to my Cairo VIP Tour with Astryd Farah ( community » other ) Howdy
I was trying to figure out a good way to invite my friends only, and I think we can do it this way.
This is an open invite for only a select number of friends -- because it's not a public offering, and it's tragically selfish. Wait...hear me out!

I'm organizing a VIP tour to Cairo with Astryd Farah.
If you don't know her, she is a dancer originally from the US who works in Cairo 6-8 months out of the year every year for the last 9. She does this sort of tour several times a year.

Many of you know Astryd is a friend of mine and I'm finally going to do it. We're going to Cairo.

Want to come with?

The dates are May 28-June 6, with an optional extention to Sharm el Sheikh for 3 days. The tour price is $2100 which does NOT include airfare. It *does* include a whole bunch of stuff, including hotel, most meals, tours, hospitality and 10-15 hours of instruciton with top name instructors for JUST OUR GROUP!

Oh, and since Astryd lives there, we'll be doing alot of partying Arab style. She takes us to the nightclubs.

Yeah yeah yeah...lots of shopping, etc.

The advantage of this tour is that it's personalized. If you dont' want to go with the group, Astryd will make sure you get there. So we have an American hostess who LIVES in Cairo. Could we ask for anything better?

Okay, cheaper airfares.

I have the details at www.JimBoz.com/cairo

Let me know ifyou're interested. Would love to have you.
This tour is going to be limited to about 6-10 people.
Delicious, eh?

Ramblings of a Travelling Belly Dancer

so, back from Brussels & Paris...yeah work.

Last trip of the 2008 tour completed and finally up for air.

Been out o f the loop - nasty divorce, lots of travel. This year:

Ended a 7 year relationship (dramatically)
Started a new one
Got more involved online, and couldn't keep up
Taught in like 9 countries (a couple gigs were cancelled, it was scheduled for 11)
Flew 139,131 miles for dance gigs
That's the equivalent of circumnavigating the globe over 5 1/2 times

So, I figure I'd pick up a couple of nice new dress shirts for Cairo. I mean, Princess Farhana (aka "Plez") decreed that we're going out every night. I figure to fit in I'd dress up - not a biggie, I like it.

Well, I don't really like how dress shirts fit me. Here's the poop and the cause for the latest insanity.

My neck size is 18 (actually more than 18, but that will fit me relatively comfortably), but I have long arms - so I need...get this:

18 - 36/37

So, you know how diffic... read more

Howdy

I'm wondering if anyone can help me verify the artist and help me find the album to a song I've found in MIDI files.

If your system can play MIDI, the link is at www.focusmm.com/sound/amusic/shrook.mid

As far as I can find, the artist may (may not?) be Samira Said also spelled sometimes Samira Saied. However, I can't find the song listed on any of the discographies I can find online and of course, I can't find an album from any of my 'usual' sources that has the song.

Oh my — this is going to be insane.
Just got off the phone with Princess Farhana. For those of you who aren’t aware, we’re going to Cairo together.

Not for a festival, not for a tour, just to hang out and absorb. Well, and shop for costumes and take private lessons. The usual.

So we’re planning on visiting our friend Astryd (www.DanceAstryd.com) and hanging out with some of Princess Farhana’s friends. You see, she’s been there before. I’m the only one getting his…erm…’Cairo cherry’ pop... read more
