Ramblings of a Travelling Belly Dancer

Cairo - What to Pack?!?

   Thu, May 1, 2008 - 10:13 AM
This is my first time travelling to Cairo. Geez, what to pack?!?

Okay, I’ve travelled a bit. Just last year I flew more actual miles than the equivalent of circumnavigating the globe 4+ times. This year will be over 5.

So I’m not really a stranger to packing for a trip, although I admittedly pack a little extra. I tend to expand to the maximum weight and volume allowances.

Packing in just a carry-on? You freakin kidding me?!?

Don't ask me for advice -- I seem to take everything I own when I travel! :-) One of my troupe members spent the whole summer in Cairo last year and only took a carryon. I'm still astonished that she could do this...

When I went in 2005, I packed a whole bunch of those "travel" space bags. When it was time to leave and I had to find a place for all my new goodies, I packed all my clothing and items into the space bags. It works out so well!! I was able to bring everything back in the two suitcases. well - we will not talk about the tables and the light for my house and the --- well, you get the picture. Have a great time!!!

I traveled to Cairo in 2007. It was a wonderful trip and I will definately go back.

Just remember that it is hot during the day, although this time of the year isn't too bad yet. And it can be cool at night. I found layering to be helpful....but everything light weight. I wouldn't wear anything too clingy...loose clothing is better not only for the weather but also to honor their customs.

You will not be allowed in some places wearing shorts or tank tops. Cairo is more accepting but we found that if we honored their cultures, we were accepted more.

Must go to the Khan El Kahlili Market!!!! Find Mr. Mahmoud's three story bellydance shop. Careful buying houkas or shishas as they are called in Egypt. Make sure you get all the parts. The glass ones are better....although the metals ones have nice designs - they leak.

Must eat the Kosheri. It's wonderful! And pigeon isn't too bad either.

The people are friendly! We had a wonderful time. Don't miss the Cairo Museum of Egyptian Artifacts. Great exhibits!

Wishing you much fun and safe travels.

hugs,
Sanura
