Harvest

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/jmgthatsme/blog/de0526d5-b578-4587-aba4-6fe907a3212c">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/5dd/dc3/5dddc30f-5904-4cfa-8926-25250f700a0f.thumb" width="58" height="78" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>I seem to struggle with the fall harvest. I love being outside in the early spring -- late winter even -- turning over the soil, deciding where to plant, adding the compost, clearing away the weeds and debris, setting up the irrigation. Later, as seeds start to germinate, and the starts start starting, the weather get warmer and it's even more fun to be outside. When summer rolls around it's all about maintenance. It takes way less time to keep the garden growing and I actually start reaping lettuce and carrots. -- easy crops to harvest, clean and enjoy. At the same time, I'm getting the tomatoes in their cages, turn on the drip lines a couple times a week and spend the rest of the beautiful summer days out hiking, playing soccer and going to BBQs. The garden flourishes (in the good years, anyway) without a lot of attention.

The hint of red on the tomatoes is exciting. There's something ceremonial about plucking that first cherry tomato -- but there is too little time between the plucking and the popping of it into my mouth followed by the exclamation "ohmygodthat'sgood" for there to be any ceremony. The next week is bliss. Every time I step into the garden, I harvest a handful of tomatoes. If I need some potatoes, I just dig 'em up. The sunflower stops following the sun because the stock can't support the weight anymore. The second planting of lettuce is getting ready to eat. Heck, I even harvested strawberries this month.

But I tell ya, I was pretty damned overwhelmed when I returned from a week's vacation and tried to catch up with the harvest. It took me two days to get all the fruit off the cherry tomato plant. And the heirloom tomato is almost as prolific (if I could only beat the slugs to the ripe ones.) With the nights getting shorter, I just don't have the time to get everything done after I get home from work. I get a little overwhelmed, frankly.

You know what makes it all okay? The fresh blt. Toasted whole wheat bread with a little bit of mustard, two or three thick slices bacon, a mix of romaine and red leaf lettuce that just got plucked and big slabs of tomato fresh off the plant. I go sit on the stoop with a bottle of beer and savor every bite. It usually takes about two minutes to finish. Then I go make another.

It gives me the inspiration to figure out what to do with two gallons of cherry tomatoes (dehydrate them) and pounds and pounds of herilooms (make spaghetti sauce). It's a tough job, I know. </div>

Dehydrated chicken? After six miles and 1,800 ft elevation with a 40+ lb pack, yummers! Especially when you cook it up with some mixed vegetables (also dehydrated), chicken bullion with mushroom gravy and top it off with real dumplings. That was the last dinner G and I cooked on the trail for the six person party that went to the Eagle Cap Wilderness last week. Eight days of backcountry bliss. I've been back in "civilization" for hardly a day, and I miss the rocks and trees and hills already.

Lunch is always the easiest of meals. If you've planned your day, everything is sitting at or near the top of your pack and all you have to do is plop yourself down on a soft rock. On day five of the jaunt, a peppered turkey stick with some oily sharp white cheddar wrapped up together in some New Zealand flat bread satisfies as well as any Dagwood-type sandwich can on a one-hour lunch break from work. Strike that. There is something especially satisfying in having your greatest worries of the day being 1) where you will sleep and 2) what you will eat. And since you have the answer to both of those worries on your back already, there isn't much to sweat. At least not emotional/intellectual sweat. I was washing out my hiking clothes every stinkin' 'cause, well, they stunk. (They don't call it poly-pew for nothing.) I usually spend more mental energy on when we'll break so I can have a peanut butter and dried banana sandwich (in the same flat bread, and note: the bananas are dried ~whole~ bananas and not those fried banana chips). Stupendously yummy.

CroNC does food right on the trail. Our menu included tamale pie with black been soup and a fruit crisp for dessert; chicken masala with seaweed salad, rice and peas with tapioca pudding; curried lentils with mixed vegetables and brown rice topped off with boil-in-a-bag smores (since I know you'll ask, you put mini marshmallows, (dark) chocolate chips and graham crackers in a zip lock freezer bag, throw it in boiling water for a few minutes and presto! smorie goodness without the campfire); I could go on, but it all seems so long ago now.

-*Sigh*-

I thought my lunch today -- turkey and swiss on real leavened bread with the works -- would make me forget about the Wallowa Mountains and Eagle Cap (pictured). Instead, it made that peppered turkey seem all the more enjoyable. </div>

    </a>
										<div>The on-going saga of my effort to eat a sandwich per day for an entire week. Which really isn't that much of a challenge when you get right down to it, so I try to through in little bits of life experience to make it more fun and exciting.
---------------
My girlfriend and I have very different morning routines. In almost two years of couple-dom we have found something of a middle ground, but the truth of the matter is still this: I like to sleep 'til the last possible moment then hit the snooze button one more time. When I realize I'm late, I jump out of bed and into the shower, throw on some clothes and (hopefully) snag some food on my way out the door. I can usually make it to work before the positive effects of the shower wear off. Then I get my first cup of coffee and try not to talk to anyone for the first hour of my work day.

On the other hand, G gets up 90 minutes before she needs to leave, she takes a looooong shower, makes herself a simple but nutritious breakfast and reads the newspaper before getting dressed and heading out the door for her (fairly) long commute. She's always bright eyed and cheerful in the morning, which only makes my pre-verbal condition all the more frustrating. She also has to be to work earlier than I do, so it's rare that we have any meaning conversation in the morning.

Today's breakfast was a perfect example. She was going in late to the office and I need to be in early, so we had the same target departure time. A rarity. I listened to NPR while she was showering, dressing and cooking herself a couple of eggs. She was just sitting down to eat when I hit the shower. She was cleaning up breakfast dishes when I made my way into the kitchen. Five minutes later we were both heading out the door, she with a travel mug of tea in her hand, I with a lovely open-faced toasted peanut butter sandwich with just a hint of honey. I ate in the car on the way to the office. It made my commute much more enjoyable. In fact, I even looked forward to the red lights when I would get to enjoy my sandwich without swerving all over the road. </div>

    </a>
										<div>The weeklong exploration of the importance and yumminess of sandwiches.
---------------
The working lunch is never very satisfying -- especially when it's work that you've been procrastinating for weeks. Months? Years? Seriously, I've been working on invoices for grants that we won in 2005 and haven't actually received the money yet. In my own defense, they are reimbursable grants, meaning you've got to do the project and spend the money first, then you can ask them to pay you. And once the project is done, it's hard to get the program administrator to write a formal evaluation. So that task falls to me. Fun. Oh, and I have three of them that I need to finish this week before I go on vacation. Ah, the pre-vacation crush of work.

So I headed into the University District and Thanh Vi, a Vietnamese joint where I knew I would be able to commandeer a table and spread out my files. They also serve the most excellent Vietnamese sandwich or Bahn Mi. They are cheap, filling and sooo good. I always go for the chicken, though sometimes I'll get a second with either pork or beef. I always have to open up the baguette when the sandwich comes. It looks so skimpy and like it's too much bread. But as any sandwich lover will tell you, good bread is the first ingredient in a good sandwich. And Thahn Vi uses excellent baguettes with they judiciously fill with meat, fresh cilantro, pickled carrots and daikon and cucumber. So satisfying. And with an order of their fresh and tasty spring rolls on the side, I had the energy to plow through those stinkin' invoices.</div>

    </a>
										<div>The Sandwich Chronicles is a device to show my love for sammiches. The concept started here with a sandwich challenge: http://tribes.tribe.net/danceyerassoff/thread/020d1875-38a8-4a9d-b0a5-635131405e7f (I should note that the tribe name changes frequently, and at the time of this writing it was called !Me n Zareen's Sandwich Bar!)

Like George Lucas did with Star Wars, I'm starting in the middle of the story. I'll come back around to Part I eventually.

---------------
Last night, Tuesday, I went with 30 of my closest friends to watch a soccer game. My Sounders were playing FC Dallas in the US Open Cup. I know, I know, none of you know what the US Open Cup is. Most soccer fans don't know the US Open Cup (the Cup). It's only the oldest single elimination tournament in US history. It's open to any team affiliated with US Soccer, and the earliest rounds include amateur teams and developmental teams. In successive rounds teams from higher divisions join in. My Sounders are a USL Division 1 team, so they joined in the third round and beat Portland, another USL1 team. Then they beat Chivas 3-1. Chivas is an MLS team -- the strongest league in the US, so it was a big upset that put the Sounders into the quarterfinals. That game was in August, and Seattle C-R-U-S-H-E-D Colorado (another MLS team) 5-0. Five to zero. That's a serious ass whooping.

So hopes were high for last night's game. Beyond the great run in the Cup, the Sounder are fighting for first place in USL1 and had lost only a single game in their last 16. I organized a group to attend the game. It's been my lot among my soccer buddies to buy tickets and get people together for big games. Ten years ago I organized a group to travel to Vancouver for a US/Canada World Cup Qualifier. The US win clinched a spot in the big tourney. Fond memory, that.

Two hours before the game my crew gathered here: http://www.elysianbrewing.com/Fields.html
Super convenient 'cause it's right across from the stadium. We could drink/drank/jrunk 'til game time, grab a bite and stagger to the game.
I had their cuban sandwich, sliced ham, roast pork loin, dill pickles, Gruyere, yellow mustard on a baguette. Served with fries and very yummy.

After my friends had gathered and I had distributed tickets, we headed to the field and settled in. It was a great game, and if a couple of balls had bounced differently, it would be my Sounders hosting the Cup final instead of Dallas. They played to a 0-0 tie in regulation, and since it's a cup match, they had to play overtime to get a winner. I'm sad to say Carlos Ruiz, the Guatemalan international, scored the winner for Dallas. He's a great striker, but a terrible sportsman. Late in OT, after he'd been subbed out, he kicked a ball into the stands. It was a Sounders throw in, and he did it just to delay the game. The ref didn't hesitate to give him a yellow card -- it's quite rare for the ref to card a player on the sideline. I hope he was already carrying a caution and will have to sit out the final. That was a hideous display of (un)sportsmanship.

I've been depressed since the final whistle blew. </div>

    </a>
										<div>Five of seven people in my camping crew (a collective we refer to as "The Crack o' Noon Crew") made the summit of Mount Adams on Sunday. It was way fucking harder than I expected, and I can't say why. I climbed Rainier two years ago, and it seemed like a piece of cake. Maybe the difference is that we were self-guided this weekend, so there was no one to keep the pace slow and tell me to stop and eat. And maybe 'cause the Rainier climb went smoothly I underestimated how difficult Adams (which is some 2,200 feet shorter) would be. Also, we had crazy winds this weekend, and that made the whole endeavor extra exerting.

The bummer for me was that Gina didn't get to summit. She got altitude sickness just before we left camp Sunday. And not a toilet in sight. In fact, we had to pack out ~everything~. Ick. I felt terrible leaving her at base camp, and it made her a bit grumpy to be left behind. I don't blame her. And she would have done the same if I'd been the one who was sick. We're over it. We're going to try again next. Maybe we'll go earlier in the season and try to ski down!

The picture above is of the false summit of Mt Adams at Sunrise. It took two long steep pitches to reach that, then you cross a short flat area to get to the base of the true summit, which is another long, steep pitch. It's a frustrating mountain 'cause you don't see the actual summit 'til you reach the false summit.

Here's a bunch of photos. Send me a PM if you can't see them, or do a search on flickr for Mt Adams and/or jmgthatsme.

										<div>I'm going to attempt the summit of Mt Adams this weekend! 12,270 ft. We're taking the non-technical South Spur route, which involves hiking in to Lunch Counter (approx 9,200 ft) and camping Saturday night. We'll get up real early Sunday, try to make the summit, and then come all the way back down. Sunday night my group is going to stay at a cabin with a hot tub. So psyched!</div>

										<div>The US gave me a reason to be a fan again. The game against Mexico today had all the elements: great play, great goals and a proper result. Proper in my opinion, anyway. I wish I could find a picture of Feilhaber's goal. It was a world class volley from 25 yards. I'll post a video if/when I find it.

The photo is of Landon Donavon, who scored four goals in the tournament -- all PKs. He's now tied as the US all-time leading goal scorer. I think he's 25 now, so he'll cement his place in US soccer history, that's fo' sho'. </div>

										<div>In case you didn't know (and since almost no Americans know, and why would people elsewhere care?) the U.S. Men's National Team is playing in the regional tournament right now, the Gold Cup. But that only goes to show that it ain't all written in stone, and that an upset can happen anytime. Hopefully the US is saving all its upsets to be the upsetter when they travel to South America later this month for another tournament. Wish I was going to Venezuela.</div>

										<div>Any of you good with plant taxonomy (using the word 'taxonomy' always makes me feel real smart)?

I found these three plants in my yard. One I should really know 'cause I planted it. The others pre-date my occupancy and gardening endeavors. Take a look at the pics and leave your wisdom and witticisms under the photos. Thanks!

One is included as the blog photo. Here's another:

<a href="http://people.tribe.net/jmgthatsme/blog/632d9895-b697-4390-85a4-68aaf4fe0e25">  						          <img class=" picThumb" src="http://images.tribe.net/tribe/upload/photo/132/ef4/132ef4b0-d112-44ba-9d30-c9cb9a6094b3.thumb" width="65" height="47" alt="" />
    </a>
										<div>Below are four ( 4 ) questions and a bonus question.
YOU HAVE TO ANSWER THEM INSTANTLY! You can't take your time, answer all of them immediately . OK?

Let's find out just how clever you really are....

First Question:

You are participating in a race. You overtake the second person. What position are you in?

Answer: If you answered that you are first, then you are
absolutely wrong! If you overtake the second person and you take his place, you are second!

Try not to screw up next time.
Now answer the second question,
but don't take as much time as you took for the first question, OK ?

Second Question:
If you overtake the last person, then you are...?

Answer: If you answered that you are second to last, then you are wrong again. Tell me, how can you overtake the LAST Person?

You're not very good at this, are you?

Third Question:
Very tricky arithmetic! Note: This must be done in your head only .
Do NOT use paper and pencil or a calculator. Try it.

Take 1000 and add 40 to it. Now add another 1000 . Now add 30 .
Add another 1000 . Now add 20 . Now add another 1000
Now add 10 . What is the total?

Did you get 5000 ?

The correct answer is actually 4100.

If you don't believe it, now check it with a calculator!
Today is definitely not your day, is it?
Maybe you'll get the last question right....
.....Maybe.

Fourth Question:

Mary's father has five daughters: 1. Nana, 2. Nene, 3. Nini,
4. Nono. What is the name of the fifth daughter?

Did you Answer Nunu?
NO! Of course it isn't.
Her name is Mary. Read the question again!

Okay, now the BONUS ROUND:

A mute person goes into a shop and wants to buy a toothbrush. By
imitating the action of brushing his teeth he successfully
expresses himself to the shopkeeper and the purchase is
done.
Next, a blind man comes into the shop who wants to buy a pair of
sunglasses; how does HE indicate what he wants?

He just has to open his mouth and ask...
It's really very simple.... Like you!</div>

    </a>
										<div>Okay, it's not really news, but get this: I changed my avatar and my profile views skyrocketed. Why? Here's my theory: I used a detail from the photo above, a picture of a woman. With a tape measure.

It's a hilarious photo, and I wanted people to see it, so I highlighted it in my avatar. I guess it worked!</div>

    </a>
										<div>Not baseball, though their play-offs are in direct competition.
The football playoff picture is only starting to take shape.
Basketball is still in pre-season.
Hockey is . . .  I dunno.

Of course I mean MLS. Major League Soccer, that is. And my United is top seed. I'm not talking about Manchester United, not Newcastle United, not United State of Electronica -- DC United!

I give limited though focused energy to my soccer fan-dom. Play-off require, above all, focus, and now is the time. That's why I've got the dopey avatar. </div>
