In a revolutionary leap that could transform solar power from a marginal, boutique alternative into a mainstream energy source, MIT researchers have overcome a major barrier to large-scale solar power: storing energy for use when the sun doesn't shine. Until now, solar power has been a daytime-only energy source, because storing extra solar energy for later use is prohibitively expensive and grossly inefficient. With today's announcement, MIT researchers have hit upon a simple, inexpensive, highly efficient process for storing solar energy. Requiring nothing but abundant, non-toxic natural materials, this discovery could unlock the most potent, carbon-free energy source of all: the sun. "This is the nirvana of what we've been talking about for years," said MIT's Daniel Nocera, the Henry Dreyfus Professor of Energy at MIT and senior author of a paper describing the work in the July 31 issue of Science. "Solar power has always been a limited, far-off solution. Now we can seriously think about solar power as unlimited and soon." Inspired by the photosynthesis performed by plants, Nocera and Matthew Kanan, a postdoctoral fellow in Nocera's lab, have developed an unprecedented process that will allow the sun's energy to be used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen gases. Later, the oxygen and hydrogen may be recombined inside a fuel cell, creating carbon-free electricity to power your house or your electric car, day or night. The key component in Nocera and Kanan's new process is a new catalyst that produces oxygen gas from water; another catalyst produces valuable hydrogen gas. The new catalyst consists of cobalt metal, phosphate and an electrode, placed in water. When electricity - whether from a photovoltaic cell, a wind turbine or any other source - runs through the electrode, the cobalt and phosphate form a thin film on the electrode, and oxygen gas is produced. Combined with another catalyst, such as platinum, that can produce hydrogen gas from water, the system can duplicate the water splitting reaction that occurs during photosynthesis. The new catalyst works at room temperature, in neutral pH water, and it's easy to set up, Nocera said. "That's why I know this is going to work. It's so easy to implement," he said. "Giant Leap" for Clean Energy Sunlight has the greatest potential of any power source to solve the world's energy problems, said Nocera. In one hour, enough sunlight strikes the Earth to provide the entire planet's energy needs for one year. James Barber, a leader in the study of photosynthesis who was not involved in this research, called the discovery by Nocera and Kanan a "giant leap" toward generating clean, carbon-free energy on a massive scale. "This is a major discovery with enormous implications for the future prosperity of humankind," said Barber, the Ernst Chain Professor of Biochemistry at Imperial College London. "The importance of their discovery cannot be overstated since it opens up the door for developing new technologies for energy production thus reducing our dependence for fossil fuels and addressing the global climate change problem." "Just the Beginning" Currently available electrolyzers, which split water with electricity and are often used industrially, are not suited for artificial photosynthesis because they are very expensive and require a highly basic (non-benign) environment that has little to do with the conditions under which photosynthesis operates. More engineering work needs to be done to integrate the new scientific discovery into existing photovoltaic systems, but Nocera said he is confident that such systems will become a reality. "This is just the beginning," said Nocera, principal investigator for the Solar Revolution Project funded by the Chesonis Family Foundation and co-Director of the Eni-MIT Solar Frontiers Center. "The scientific community is really going to run with this." Nocera hopes that within 10 years, homeowners will be able to power their homes in daylight through photovoltaic cells, while using excess solar energy to produce hydrogen and oxygen to power their own household fuel cell. Electricity-by-wire from a central source could be a thing of the past. The project is part of the MIT Energy Initiative, a program designed to help transform the global energy system to meet the needs of the future and to help build a bridge to that future by improving today's energy systems. MITEI Director Ernest Moniz, Cecil and Ida Green Professor of Physics and Engineering Systems, noted that "this discovery in the Nocera lab demonstrates that moving up the transformation of our energy supply system to one based on renewables will depend heavily on frontier basic science." The success of the Nocera lab shows the impact of a mixture of funding sources - governments, philanthropy, and industry. This project was funded by the National Science Foundation and by the Chesonis Family Foundation, which gave MIT $10 million this spring to launch the Solar Revolution Project, with a goal to make the large scale deployment of solar energy within 10 years.

Looking at a map of the state of California and comparing them with the ancient Yoga chakra system or energy centers within the human body. I have found that the Chakras of the body also pertain to energy centers in California. Both the cities and the land manifest themselves through the elements to create the diverse climates of California. The Sierra Nevada Mountain range is the spine of the Goddess running north to south along the Eastern border of the State. The internal valleys of the state are her vital organs, and Mt Shasta the crown. The base Chakra is the energy center for foundation, self-preservation and physical identity, or Earth. The base chakra of California stems from San Diego, the southern most cities in the state to Los Angeles. Interestingly, That entire area is where the battles of the Mexican-American war were waged. On February 2, 1848, The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed, ending the war between Mexico and the United States. The Treaty set the boundary between US and Mexico, Thus forming California into an American State. This area is historically and spiritually the base chakra of the state. If you ask people what they think of when you say Los Angeles, they often will say Glamour, illusion, stardom, sex, drugs and rock and roll. Absolutely. This is where we find the active and volatile second Chakra. The energy center of water, emotion, sexuality, primal drive, desire and change. This is so true of this region and of this element. Anyone who has spent any amount of time in L.A. can tell you that it has an illusive, hungry nature to it. L.A. Is where Illusions are pumped out by the Moviemakers, and advertising agency, where sex, youth and beauty drive the culture. Fads are born and die, music is turned into a commodity to be bought and sold. It is also the porn capitol of the United States, if not the world. The rates of drug addiction and teenage runaways abound. It is a place that preys on beauty and innocence. It is glamorous, enticing, exiting and if abused, dangerous. The third chakra, Fire, Ego identity, oriented to self-definition. This chakra is known as the power chakra, located in the solar plexus. It rules our personal power, will, and autonomy, as well as our metabolism,and money. When healthy, this chakra brings us energy, effectiveness, spontaneity, and non-dominating power. North from L.A. lays the central coast of California. This is a place where some of the most beautiful and picturesque pristine beaches, cities and towns can be found. Namely Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo. Santa Barnara county is the wealthiest county and most expensive in the entire California state. Its no mistake that power, status, and money are so associated with this region. The 4th / Heart Chakra is equated with love and life giving bountiful abundance in the form of nutrition The San Joaquin is a giant valley, like a womb that stretches the length of the state from the town of Gilroy just south of San Jose, all the way to San Luis Obispo, approximately 150 miles. Broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, strawberries, peppers, squash, carrots, asparagus, celery, tomatoes, mushrooms, brussels sprouts, garlic, onions and flowers are also grown in abundance. In addition, Monterey County has become one of the largest premium grape growing regions in California, with over 40,000 acres of wine grapes. *] Truly this is the womb of the Goddess of California, nestled high and deep within the fertile soil, nourished by the healing, life giving waters, Chakra Five: Sound, Communication, Creative identity, oriented to self-expression This is the chakra located in the throat and is thus related to communication and creativity. Here we experience the world symbolically through vibration, such as the vibration of sound representing language. of is the San Jose Valley. Continuation, evolution and the lifeblood of the state, of the nation, its technology and invention is pumped from here, into the state the nation, and the world. San Jose is the creative 5th chakra doing its work to ensure the future. The technological industry draws people from all over the world. Here you find groves, mosques, churches, Temples, synagogues, shrines Rosicrucian’s, Masons, Orthodox, Moslem, Christians, Jews, Pagans, reforms, Buddhists, So many different groups of people and systems of culture and belief. Also in this same region is more of the throat/ communication chakra further to the north, starting in San Francisco and the east and North Bay,This probably doesn’t surprise anyone. San Francisco is the Voice of California. Politics, alternative lifestyles, religions, cultures, you name it. The energies of the fifth chakra can be heard, especially coming from Berkley and San Francisco. It is the part of the state, that speaks loudly about equality for all people, pride in ones nature and ones beliefs, no matter what they may be or how others react. It is an activist, this energy. Whenever changes are needed locally or globally, you will first hear of it coming from this region of the state and often the changes are far- reaching into the world. Sacramento, the capital govt seat also is an important aspect of the throat chakra as it speaks and represents the rest of the entire state. Chakra Six: Light, Archetypal identity, oriented to self-reflection This chakra is known as the brow chakra or third eye center. It is related to the act of seeing, both physically and intuitively. As such it opens our psychic faculties and our understanding of archetypal levels. When healthy it allows us to see clearly, in effect, letting us "see the big picture." This is the area known as the wine region of California. Sonoma, Mendocino, Napa Valley and surrounding areas. This area of California is where allot of people come to find clarity. It is a rich area not only in soil for growing grapes but also in being a place where the rich come to get away. This region is host to an insane amount of spas, resorts, retreats, ashrams, Mineral springs, Yoga retreats, and I am sure other types of places for the relaxing and purifying of the mind, body and spirit. Another draw to this place is hot air ballooning. I find it an interesting correlation that air is the element of thought and clarity. This is a place where people pilgrimage to, to rise above it all. Finally we reach the Crown Charka. What is the crown Jewel of California? It is truly California’s most sacred site. Towering over the Northern California forest at 14,162 ft. (4,317 meters) is Mount Shasta. This is a very holy place and a subject of much controversy concerning extra-terrestrials, lemurian, atlantian, and mystical lore. Even before you reach the mountain itself, you are aware of the sacred energy. It abounds. The headwaters for the great Sacramento River that feeds much of Inland California, has its source here. The tales say that even in times of drought, this spring continues to flow from its underground source, flowing up to the surface from behind a mossy rock. Sound Familiar? This area is also the home of several sacred lakes such as lake medicine, Castle Lake, Lake Siskiyou and Hart Lake. There are also the McCloud Falls, which cascade over Lava rock formations left behind from the once, active volcanic region. A Transformational Journey

Gosh, this is my 1st real Blog...and I find it really important to express what is happening in my life...as I express, I learn and recieve back from others...so cool. Well its been about 3 months since I landed here in Maui for my Park Service position in Haleakala National Park. Being here in the islands can be intense as these are super tall volcanic islands from the bottom of the great pacific ocean...Maui is actually almost 30,000 ft tall in total height....WOW. So I am typically working above the clouds... see enclose photo of my typical work environment I also work deep inside the crater which can fit all of Manhattan inside of it. This crater is a major earth vortex point and has alot of energy up there...I have accelerated my karma burning alot just by being up there so much...I have also gotten in major kine shape hiking in and out weekly...you should see this 1500 ft swithback climb up the side of the crater! An ass kicker for sure. I have seen lots of amazing things out there and UP there too...tons of ships are in the sky and I am beginning to see the energy lines across the moonlit sky...pretty cool thing to witness. Besides the work scene I have found a really nice studio cottage in Haiku on a palm tree filled 3 acres with super cool landlords that are Waldorf teachers and organic farmers...very nice family with 3 children. I feel pretty blessed here although my journey has had some challenges that has only accelerated my personal growth as a humble human BE~ing. I have delved deeper into my energy heart clearing tons of stuff and absorbing the mana here more and more by the day. My body, mind and spirit has seen alot of streamlining and it just continues to evlove. It is amazing when ya get deep into the crusty core of yourself...when energy chuncks are coming up and out in meditation...when burst after burst is coming off the spine...wow...talk about energy. Its my path though and its what I have chosen. I am beginning to realize how so few have chosen to awaken at this time...it just is easier to just continue being who you are and not dismantling the countless lifetimes of stored energy inside...I just find it amazing...but thats freewill choice for ya! Eventually we return back to our natural state...energy...spirit...and vibration becomes the reality of who we are...whats your vibe? I have also met alot of cool burner type folks and we are gathering weekly to plan a Burning man type regional event called Source in February for 3 days! There is a solid group of folks already involved and its very exciting. I have been to some pretty fun parties including a boat party last night with very good DJ's and the island of Maui in the background...all night long. As I write this I feel it necessary to extend a ray of light from my heart to yours. I am breathing in the love the Aloha and you are recieving it on a subtle level via our higher selves....which is something I am totally beginning to tune into an drealize we are always communicating on this level.
