I'm smart. Pretty much, at least. And not in one area; I'm strong in science, history, English. And yes, math. So why did I need 15 minutes on the phone with my tax accountant to make sure I didn't totally screw up what I reported? This is math, right? I need aspirin. And some rum.

Accent Party Note

Hey, folks-- Just had a possible mischaracterization pointed out to me about my last email about the party. So to be clear about everything: 1) No, it's not an *Irish* accent party. The only Irish accent should be mine. 2) No, it's not a drinking party. My note on alcohol was not to say, "Woohoo, let's have a lot to drink!" It was to make the point that once you're under my roof, if you have anything to drink you're my responsibility and I take it seriously. I'm not expecting to stock a bar for this (though if you've got requests or favorites, please feel free to let me know, or bring things yourself.) 3) The only association between the event and St. Patrick's Day is coincidence of timing. I won't be serving Irish cuisine (shudder! Italian is more likely. You think the Irish ate that way because they WANTED to?) No obnoxious St. Patrick's behavior. (I'll find other ways to be obnoxious.) That established, I'm still open to ideas about how to spend the evening. Bring a movie to watch, a game to play, an activity to share. Bring music. My anniversary with SBC is coming up, and my DSL rate is going to just about double, to $35/month. (Not to worry, though--SBC is so very considerately willing to make renewing default unless I make them stop. I feel so...cared for. Like a cow.) Anyone out there with recommendations for DSL providers that have more reasonable fees attached?

Hey, Folks-- Spinning off an idea that came out of a conversation with Emilia Romagna, I invite everyone to Castle Tipperary-by-the-River (okay, my house) for an evening/overnight of character & accent play. DATE: Saturday, 3/18, from 6 PM onwards. St. Pat's plus 24. PURPOSE: To have a rip-roaring time (ripping roars is a time-honored Irish tradition that doesn't bear explaining at this moment)--IN FAIRE CHARACTER. BRING: - DVDs that somehow tie in to an Irish theme. - Possible contributions to dinner. - Bedding, if you plan to stay overnight (and if you're drinking, you're staying). - Allergy meds, if you've got issues with cats. I've got 5, and they're all free-range. - Quarters or some other appropriate forfeit (Oreos are an acceptable substitute) for serious breaches of character or accent. *** Funds raised in this fashion will go to the guild coffers. DON'T BRING: Faire costumes. It's a night for civvies. *** Lapses into Scottish accents when within 20 feet of Lochan will be treated as natural disasters, and not penalized. At request, here are the songs that I (theoretically) might be able to play at either RenFaire or Dickens. Some have chordal structures that are as yet beyond me, so if you've got a particular interest in my learning one specific song, ping me so I can make it a priority. (Italicized & underlined songs are sketchy for me at this moment in time.) Likewise, if you've suggestions for songs to add, please make them. Realize that by doing so, you're nominating yourself to find lyrics & chords for me, and possibly to teach me the song. Not so bad as it sounds. I survived Calaveras Snow Festival

and all I got was this (lousy?) blog. Ever so glad driving conditions on 49 and 12 were better today than on Friday night. The lenya survived the cold surprisingly well. All I'm needing are leggings, I think--unless I can train ferrets to hold onto my calves for 8 hours at a stretch. If the snow-cum-slush made us all a bit more fatigued and snappish, I think by and large the dancing was ideal antidote for it. And two days of Irish dance to Tempest was quite the unexpected treat. Thanks be that I remember more than I had any right to expect. And I'll give this to a short-handed fair: it rubbed my nose in just how many of our dances I actually know if there's no one else to dance in them. Thanks to everyone who was willing to listen to my singing--and if folks are interested, get in touch with me about putting together some faire-appropriate song-sets. We have too many gifted voices in camp for me to be the only one singing. I can get lyrics, chords, and even CDs to people who want to learn songs that I play--and I'm very open to new suggestions, for songs to add to the bill. Back to the salt mines. I've got to get job apps out this week, and get the house closer to sale-point. *Sigh* I'm tired already.
